Herniated Disc

... I had a piece of my disc break off and press against my spinal nerve and had surgery on L3 in 95. Other than back pain, I have had little nerve pain since surgery. Recently I drove from Chicago to Hilton Head, then down to Orlando and finally back to Chicago 1 week later. I like to get out of the car and move around and stretch every 3 hours or so but I ran into 2 accidents that backed up traffic for miles and kept me in the car for over 5 hours. Within a few days of arriving back in Chicago back spasms started an went right into severe nerve pain thru my my left hip. leg, knee and shin. I describe this because I am guessing others here have suffered thru the same thing. I could not walk for a week and had to use crutches, obviously could not sleep more than an hour at a time and finally had an MRI and found I have a L4 herniated disc. I was positive I needed surgery as the dibilitating nerve pain was just like it was in 95 before my first surgery.

... Now, after a round of Prednisone and daily Gabapentin I feel like I may have turned a corner. It is now 3 weeks after the first nerve pain started and I have been in PT for those 3 weeks. Some days are better than others but I feel like it just might be possible to avoid another surgery. My question to you guys is who has had a severe herniated disc in their lower back and escaped without surgery? How long did it take for you  to recover? And most importantly how long til you could play golf again? 😜

Man - I'm so sorry to hear this. I've had two back surgeries (L5/S1 - microdiscetomy 2/15; ALIF 10/15) and I know exactly how you are feeling. I have nothing to offer except to say that I have learned a lot and I doubt I would have the surgery again. I have heard and read a lot on this issue and it seems that those who opt for surgery and those who don't have similar results in the end. It takes time but my physical therapist was amazing and he was certain surgery could be avoided for most people. I know everyone situation is different but I wish you well and continued success in avoiding surgery.

I’m in the same boat, waiting on MRI to be scheduled. Mine is not as severe as yours. L5 with pain down left side to knee. I am still able to walk and able to manufacture a swing. But I am getting sick of the pain, it has been 18 months.

I had 2 slipped discs about 10-11 years ago and I got through it with PT, acupuncture, and epidural injections. For the past 8-9 mos I’ve had the pain through the left hip, down the hammy, and all the way to my toes. It’s not been debilitating, but it seems to be getting worse. My rheum is starting the process of getting an MRI scheduled.
Good luck. Chisag!!!

I wasn’t playing golf at the time, but 12 years ago I had 3 herniated discs at 24 years old. It was pretty rough.

Had a boss tell me to suck it up, or be fired so I skipped PT and anything that could have helped me. I still have recurring pain today, almost every day.

Stretching has helped a lot.

I haven’t gone the herniated route but I had a transverse process of L1 at the ripe age of 21.  It causes some trouble now—what worked then and has worked best over the 7 years since is gentle stretching and yoga, non-bending ab work for core stability, epsom salt baths when pain occurs and an occasional massage.

Prayers up for your recovery Sam!

So sorry to hear about the disc.  Hope you recover before heading to the desert again for golf.  I've never had a herniated disc either. When I turned 55 in 2002, I had low back pain almost constantly that affected my golf swing.  A doc said the MRI showed degenerative disc disease, which I think is doc-speak for old age.  I lived with it for 15 years, then changed my golf swing and the pain is much less (why didn't I do that earlier).

My wife had an L5-S1 fusion 11 years ago that got her off a ton of meds, but she still has some nerve pain but it's manageable.  Her surgery was in Nov 2008 and she was playing golf in the spring.  I'm glad she's off the fentanyl, morphine and four 10-500 hydrocodone a day.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

My back blew out Sunday morning. I reached over to pick up our 10 lb. Yorkie. I felt a pull/burn and I couldn’t straighten up. I have two pinched nerves in my back that bother me and apparently I stirred them up. I take gabapentin and also had an ablation six months ago which helped. It looks like it’s time for another trip to the doc.

I’ve been dealing with recurring back pain the past few years, the most recent herniated disc came about three months ago and has not been improving. There are some days I can’t swing the clubs due to the pain. I’ve been doing PT, I’ve tried braces, they all seem to band aid it but it doesn’t seem to truly get better. Here’s the kicker...I’m 33.

Only positive - sometimes golf makes it feel better!

Sorry to hear about your back @ole gray. I hope you can get to feeling better soon, lower back pain can be absolutely miserable. Take care, and keep us updated on how you're doing.

I’m thinking this time it’s a minor tweak and not serious. Geez Christmas Eve is almost on us so a quick recovery would be a good present

I fell hard on my a** when I was in high school.... so hard I saw a flash of light...lol.  Years later I found out I have an L2 compression fracture. I have pain that moves from my back side to my quad and everywhere in between. Sometimes the pain is with me for months. Sometimes there is no pain for months, and then it starts over again. I just live with it.

... Update: I slept thru the night for the first time last night! 🤗  Starting to walk a little which is a great start. It seems to get better then a little worse, better and then a little worse but at least it is trending in a good direction. Thanks for all the replies and for those of you struggling with back issues, I literally and figuratively feel your pain. My back hurt everyday after the first surgery in 95, but not nerve pain, just low back pain which is manageable.

... I would love to complain about this debilitating injury but I always remember going to PT after my first surgery and a young girl in her 20's was doing the same exercises as I was doing and I assumed she had back issues too. I cry babied a little about how I might have to stop teaching golf, and how it might effect my swing and how life can be so unfair. I asked what kind of back problems she was having and she replied it was not her back. I asked what was she in PT for and her reply changed my life forever "I have terminal cancer and 4-6 months to live so I am trying to keep up my quality of life for the time I have left." Initially speechless I started a so sorry reply and she held her hand up and said "Please no pity, just enjoy the time you have and never take it for granted". I have not complained about my back since that day and always remember life is a gift so I try to enjoy it to the fullest. That has helped me get thru this and I am thankful it is not something much more serious. Merry Christmas to all my MGS friends!

Everytime I feel any slight pinch in my back, I get nervous.  Only had a couple of brief episodes that kept me in bad discomfort and they, fortunately, were short lived.  Hope you're on the mend and back chasing golf balls around! 👍

It's stories like this that bring us back down to reality. As bad as sometimes we think we have it there are others that are in a lot worse shape.

Thanks for putting things in perspective.  Hard to ****** about 10 minutes of yoga in the morning after reading that.  Merry Christmas and a speedy recovery, my friend.

I avoided surgery with epidural steroid shots, Chi.

Every few years I needed them and they mitigated the pain.  But in the end, they didn't save me from having to give up golf.

I'm a decrepit septuagenarian now, but I sometime regret not having surgery when I was young enough to have it.

I'm in no position to offer anybody advice, but I'd certainly look very hard at all of your options.

My most sincere wish is that it turns out better for you.   I couldn't mean that more.

Best of luck.

Nifty.

... Again, thanks to all for replies and support. Nifty I have indeed looked at all my options and they are in order:

1. PT and time
2. Epidural
3. Surgery

I will follow Dr's and PT's advice as both seem to think I should respond favorably and be back to normal health by mid January. That said I will not hesitate to get a shot if needed or have a 2nd surgery because golf is the centerpiece of my life and I plan on playing til I move on from this life.

... Update: I slept thru the night for the first time last night!   Starting to walk a little which is a great start.

So glad to hear you slept through the night! That’s so amazing when sleep finally starts happening! I feel the same way about my back - life is a gift. Pain has been a great teacher to me and I would not exchange anything for those lessons. That said, I always hate it when others are hurting so I’m glad things are looking up. You are in my thoughts and prayers chisag.
