Dlow206 does away with double bogeys

Long story short, the thing I need to work on is getting rid of my inside takeaway. Anyone who has followed my thread has seen it, @Kenny B has seen the worst since he saw it in person. Since Monte's clinic this past weekend, have been working hard on it and know it will take a while to get rid of.

Looks much better!!  Good job!

almost did it, shot 90 on the dot.

fairway bunker fiasco on 17 hurt me. took two shots to get out and the second shot didn't make much forward progress.

You need to start thinking like it can happen.  When you are a 16, it doesn't take much to have a great round.  My wife scared breaking 80 a couple of weeks ago and she's a 16.  She would have done it except it took her 2 shots to get out of a bunker on the last hole and made double.  Once the good rounds keep coming, a great round can happen all of a sudden.  You have a day when you stay out of trouble,  the short game is solid, and you see the line for putts better than usual.

You mean they still haven't raked those ankle deep holes whoever or whatever made?  I should have moved my ball... both times 😆. Presuming we're talking #18 bunker at CP, that thing was a complete mess.

It usually is.  The bunker is 170y long and 12 yards wide, all the way to the front of the green and wraps around to the right of the green a little too.  There are usually about 12 rakes covering the whole bunker and sometimes they all end up near the green!!  🤣  Think... someone hits their second shot in the bunker near 150y; instead of wedging it out to 100-120y, they try for the green.  Don't make it.  Now they are 10-100y out and try again.  So sometimes there are no rakes to be had in some spots of the bunker.

Today I aimed at the bunker and missed... hit the edge of the green instead.  I aimed at it because I didn't hit anything I aimed at all day.  🤣

Maybe don't think of the score as the measure of your success?  If you can manage each of the facets of golf, the score will take care of itself.

Eliminate penalty shots
Increase GIR
No 2-chips or bunker shots
No 3-putts

Doing these things during a round will get you to the next level.  Each requires considerable practice.  Maybe you should break your thread into what you are doing for Long Game, Short Game, and Putting... with emphasis what your data tells you.  Just a thought.

Congrats! For a game thought seems fairly straight forward, it does an excellent job at being hard to play and breaking 90 is an achievement!

How about: dlow206's quest to keep it under 90?

Wow, brilliant, well done, worth all the effort 👍

Please excuse me ‘not’ reading all of these posts but (and this is not a rude or critical question) can you summarise why you take so many shots to play a round?

eg

1. how many putts in a round typically

2. Ignoring club swing techniques etc, where are you taking the extra shots tee to green, is it poor distance, poor accuracy, poor shots from eg 100yds out or penalty strokes?

3. How many ‘penalty’ shots do you take in a typical round? ie this means how many extra shots, this includes either not getting out of a bunker or getting out but not hitting far enough, or in water, duff shots out of rough, duff shot chipping over a green and so on.

this is important because, although “the score is the score” ide like to know what your good score ‘could be’ if you experimentally did this:

1. lift ball out of the bunker onto the fairway as though it never went in

2. Lift from the rough to edge of fairway as if it landed there

3. Lift from deep rough to thin rough, give yourself a better chance

etc, in other words, by removing the Duffy/penalty shots what could your score be?

The idea behind this is to give yourself a chance to understand your own potential, which in turn will help your course management (play so you don’t go in bunkers/water) and work on focusing on the correct golf club skills, 🙏👌

im sure you can get to low 80s 😜

  • dlow206 changed the title to Dlow206 does away with double bogeys

Thanks everyone for the new thread name suggestions, it has been renamed.

The new thread name refers to reducing blow up holes. I know they will never go away, but i consistently have blow-up holes, at least 1 per front 9 and 1 per back 9, and they are usually worse than double bogey. I will explain more in another post.

One specific area that i need to work on is course strategy off the tee. I play the same course every week, so there is no reason for me not to have a strategy. Up until about two months ago, I would hit driver on every par 4. Main reason being that I didn't have much confidence in any other long club off the tee. Now i am confident hitting a 3 wood.

For me, I believe the right times not to hit driver are:

1. When driver brings into play hazards or fairway bunkers
2. When i need to avoid a big right miss that would be OB, hazard, or something else really bad

On point 2, not saying my 3 wood is more accurate, its just that I tend to have a different type of miss with a 3 wood than a driver. I definitely can still miss right with a 3 wood, but I don't remember a time where i hit a 3 wood with that same type of huge push slice that can be very punishing on certain holes.

To add to point 2, there's one specific hole that i can think of that i tend to get really punished on, even with a slight right miss. With the miss on that hole, you either will lose your ball, hit it into the red stake area, or be in a terrible uphill or side hill lie with trees that even makes a punch out difficult at times.
