40 is too cold

I golf a ton and I golf year around, but after todays frost delay and a high of 41, I am findng  anything below 50 takes a toll on my body. 

Lots of sports over the years and some broken bones are telling me to stop playing in the cold. 

Or it could be telling me to move to a warmer climate and buy a golf cart with a heater in the mean time.

I'm almost there with you.  My wife and I have played a few time this month when it was in the 30's, and I don't remember it being this cold in years' past. It seems a breeze adds extra chill, especially when there is a little fog.  We have a cover for our club's rental carts but no heater, and it's nice when it is a little wet.  Honestly though I stay a lot warmer when I walk with the cart mitt on my push cart.  As long as I can keep my hands warm, I'm fine.  I'm probably not moving for awhile since I just bought a new house here.

40 and no wind is....ok. But if you are in a cart it will feel much colder.

Walking briskly and wearing layers keeps most of you warm. an air warmer in your mitt and breathable waterproof socks and you'll enjoy the game from the 3rd onwards with no thought of cold.

I grew up in Wisconsin, so there really is no such thing as, "too cold" for me when it comes to much of anything, even golf.  Having said that, as Im nearly that age of 40, I find that I dont enjoy golf as much as I normally do when its below 45 degrees.

Add in some wind and that temperature goes up to 50 degrees.

40 is definitely too cold especially if it's cloudy and windy. Hi 40's sunshine and no wind  - different story.

I feel ya. Last year I played the Robert Trent Jones Trail in late March. 14 rounds of golf in 16 days. I schedule early tee times to beat the crowds. The front 9s were punishing. Push ups, jumping jacks, running in place on the tee box just to make it bearable. Regular golf often turned into speed golf. Stick and move, move, move.

I have played a lot of 40° or lower golf. It does make for a challenging day.. but any day in the Links is a good day. I’ll take 32° and sunny over -12° and neck deep snow any day.

I do notice that I do not bend as well as I used to, the lower temps surely don’t help...

My issue is not the temp for myself. It that when the high is 40, it was frosty in the morning. And the course still puts in tee times at first light. So every tee time is backed up by 40 minutes for frost and slow going all day long. Definitely walking when cold

Buddy has those hand warmers for the cart and I tried them yesterday.  On my list for sure!!!

50° and overcast with a wind is too cold. 

40° with bright sunshine and no wind is not cold.

The wind makes all the difference in the world.  Factor in an overcast sky and I'll opt to skip it if I know it's going to be below 50°.  But if it's clear and sunny with little to no wind, I can bear temps down to 40° and lower if I am layered accordingly.  Also, as others have said, you are better off walking in colder temps.  Carts are good when it's 90° and balls hot in the thick of summer, but serve no purpose in winter whatsoever, other than to accommodate the lazy.

The coldest I remember golfing in was about 34° at Musket Ridge in Myersville, MD on a crisp, clear January day.  There was actually patches of snow on the ground, but they let me play anyway, as I was the only one on the course, as I walked off the first tee.  I had like 3 layers on, including a nice thick sweater, but found myself shedding layers as the holes went on.  It was actually one of the most memorable days I have ever had on the golf course, as I didn't see another soul the entire round.  My own personal golf course that day, and it truly wasn't all that cold.

Not sure exactly what 40 would be in our celsius grading but I know 32 F is 0 C and that is the freezing mark. I have often golf up here in 1 to 3 C (and with that windchill factor taking to stupid cold for golf) but like many I wear layers and go with it. Remove layers as the days 'warms' up and adjusting to hitting a cold ball on approach shots. 

I actually like going south (as I did recently to SC first week of Dec with a buddy) and find that anywhere between 40 and 50 F is too cold for the locals. Gives us a great opportunity to have the course to ourselves and play 2 rounds without concern. I fully get it when locals think it's cold and they get to play all year round so being selective is an option.

Cold and snow on the ground here so unless I want to hit an indoor golf range I'm not golfing here (like many parts of the northern US as well).

Looked it up...40F is between 4 and 5 C

Is 40* to cold? I think it's all perspective. Living outside of Seattle, with 40* comes moisture for us, that makes it feel even colder. And if I didn't play in the moisture (Rain, Drizzle, and occasionally light snow) Hell I might only play twice a year ( it is Seattle).. But If I lived in the Southern half of the country i.e. California, Florida, Arizona, 40 would be WAY to cold, Heck 50 would almost be too cold.. But then again people on her from Florida talk about it being to hot @revkev, and @fozcycle.. only once has It been to hot up here. When I got off the course the thermometer in my truck showed 117 in the shade. that was on the east side not the Wet side of Washington.

I learned along time ago, If I didn't like the rain and cold I would not be doing outdoor activites moat of the year living here.. Once the Temps dip below 35ish it is starting to get there, do to frost delays,  frozen traps, the feeling like your hitting rocks even while using a Super soft ball..

Tomorrow is my wife's birthday.  She just informed me that we are playing golf with some friends of ours.  OK, looked up the weather forecast for Saturday... high 34, low 31 cloudy with wind 2-3 mph.   I guess I will add another layer.

Im in Salem Or so I understand rain. 33 degrees and rain is miserable.  I hunt, fish,golf hike, and worked outside for years. My body just dont like it. 

Friends from AZ used to come in June to watch me play ball. It would be 70 degrees at night and they would have hats, gloves, and parkas on drinking cocoa. lol...good times.

The short answer to your question is yes.  One only need follow the PGA and Champions Tour to confirm this .  At home in SW MT, I frequently play in 40F temps which is tolerable when the wind isn't blowing simply because humidity is so low.  Playing in those temps when we lived in Puget Sound was miserable... this from a former steelhead and salmon fishing addict .

Not sure if people think Im more nuts to golf in the winter or wade a river for winter steelhead.

You haven't lived until you've bounced a ball off of a frozen water hazard.  Or had a ball bounce ten feet in the air after hitting a frozen green.  I'll play in the 30s if it's dry and not windy.  Moisture and/or wind can make it miserable into the mid 40s.  And riding is no fun at all when it's cold.

It’s currently 34 and I can’t wait to go play this morning. It won’t be super enjoyable but it is golf and I love it. The problem here is the moisture. 34 with 92% humidity doesn’t equal fun. But this time of year if you want to play you just deal with it. 2 layers on the bottom 3 on the top and 2 extra clubs.

With many back issues over the years, and now with no curvature (lordosis) in my back anymore, I don’t play if it’s less than 50*, and even then it can’t be blustery/rainy. I crunched my back pretty badly in the cold once... Won’t happen again.

Playing in bad weather makes me appreciate good weather more, but I sympathize with my brothers and sisters that just can't go when it's cold.

I used to think nothing was “too cold.” Now anything under 60 is a non starter for me. Unless it’s with Kenny and Foz.

I guess I'm still young enough because I'll play any chance my schedule allows (which isn't super often) even if it means teeing up in single digits. Heck, I've played while it's snowing on more than one occasion. 

One of the things I love about playing in bad conditions is you've usually got the place to yourself. Great chance for extra shots and trying new things. I won't tolerate cold rain but warm rain is just fine too.

Yup, I was the same way. Played in snow & once sleet freezing rain for a couple holes. 40’ and under was not a problem but now I’m older and hopefully wiser.
