seancgmartin
Hi all, Just finished up a new build, finally got round to these ones! Tried out a new method (to me anyway!) of hand turning and finishing ferrules - let me know what you think! I've included some intermediate and finished photos of this. edingc
May I ask your process for hand turning? I have yet to do all of the ferrules on my new set, but from testing so far I've come up with the following process: 1) Tape off above and below ferrule with thick painter's tape, mount in vice. 2) Use long strips of 600 grit sandpaper to remove the excess until flush with hosel, working in a circular motion so the ferrule maintains its shape. 3) Finish with strips of 1500 grit sandpaper in the same motion. 4) Wipe with WD40 for a nice matte shine. Testing with acetone made them too shiny, in my opinion, and I couldn't for the life of me make it look right. WD40 after a fine sand seems to be much better. I don't bother taping anything off - any melted plastic is very easy to wipe off the metal (tape would cause friction with this technique) I put acetone on some fine steel wool and wrap it round the ferrule. With the butt resting on the ground I spin the head with one hand whilst pinching the steel wool round the ferrule and spin it (around the club's long axis) until the ferrule is flush. It looks a bit untidy at this point - the first ferrule close up picture. Then I use a bit of acetone on a cloth to clean up in the same way (wrap round ferrule and spin head). This gets the ferrule flush, but it is not smooth. I then use a very fine grit sand paper to buff it all flat (second ferrule picture). Wipe it all down with a bit of mineral spirit, let it dry. Then use a blow torch (small kitchen type one) for about a 0.5-1 second on each part of the ferrule until it shines (finished pics). I've overdone it a bit with the blow torch and it bubbles, if this happens, let it cool, then re-sand it, then refinish with the torch. You may prefer to polish the way you do from matte, but I quite like the shiny effect from the heat. The disclaimer I should probably make is that I've sort of made this up, but seems to work! Epon is similar to PXG in that they don't have an R&D budget, so their offerings are definitely premium. I've had my AF-505 irons for over a year and the Tour wedges for a few months now. NiftyNiblick
I've got one Epon club, a 19º AF-901 driving iron. Maybe the best club in my bag. Retired a good in itself Mizuno Fli Hi. My best club, of course, would have to be a club that I used all of twice in a typical round at my home course. Based on the cost of that single club, assembled with the shaft and grip of my choice, I imagine that an entire set of them is quite a purchase. Sent from my SM-N920V using MyGolfSpy mobile app Honestly not sure what they charged mate - these were a limited run of 500 sets in 2016 - and I managed to get an unused set from another forum (can't be many left!). I have the wedges that match these and are currently still in production, and I paid about $250 per club for those, so I'd guess somewhere around $200 a head before build/shaft costs. J.B. txgolfjunkie
I'd switch to RH to hit that setup. Goodness that's fantastic. I hit EPON once in a fitting...hit three shots and then gave it back to the fitter. It felt amazing with some OBAN CT shafts and I knew if I kept swinging, I'd leave the fitter $3,000 poorer and divorced. Those BB&F ferrules look fantastic. I've been wanting to add some to my sticks but with dozens of options, it's hard to find the ones I like the best. mr.hicksta, HardcoreLooper and seancgmartin 3 Quote Cobra Connect 5 Competitor - Team Chad King Radspeed 10.5* w/ Hzrdus RDX Blue 60 6.5 tipped 1/2" - Peacoat/Red King Radspeed Big Tour 3 Wood w/ Hzrdus RDX Blue 70 6.5 Tipped 1/2" King Radspeed Tour 5 Wood w/ Motore X F1 70 X Flex King Utility 4 21* w/ Tensei Pro White 100 X Flex King Tour MIM Copper Irons 5-G w/ AMT White X100 Onyx King MIM Black Wedges 55* & 60* w/ AMT White X100 Onyx Spider SR Pro V1x Left Dash Lefty
