Mavrik Drivers

Recommended Posts

Well the embargo just ended for the Mavrik drivers looks like we get 3 versions Mavrik, Max, and Sub Zero. (Seems like MAX is the thing across the board) Mavrik is claiming 5 yards over Epic Flash, that's a bold claim. Callaway took the opposite direction as Taylormade with a high back instead of the "Inertia Generator" the SIM is touting. I will be curious to see the official MGS review as well as how they do in the Driver test.

Has anyone tested it? This should be a good year for drivers so far. Taylormade, Callaway, Cobra, and Mizuno, all seem to have some pretty nice stories this year.

If they really improved the sound from the Epic Flash and also created a better version of Flash Face, I think this is going to be the best driver this season hands down.

Only minor annoyance would be the removal of the weight track, but I understand the technological reasoning behind that. The fact there are three models now should help minimize effects on the fitting process with the track gone.

Similar shapes to me. Callaway chose a cyclone shaped head where due to the weight placement and shape of the inertia generator TM raised the crown and the skirt to lower the center of gravity.

What I find interesting is Callaway using lighter stronger material to help increase speed and continue with the AI design to improve ball speeds across the face.

The ability to maintain or reduce the amount of lost ball speed on off center hits is where imo drivers these days make the most improvements in helping golfers hit it longer and straighter. It was first noticeable to me in the 917 release from titleist where my misses were still pretty much on line and the distance loss was minimal compared to previous drivers from most brands.

Losing 5-7 yards and keeping a ball on its starting line compared to 10+ yards and way offline is great for every golfer. Granted there are some swings we make that no driver tech can fix.

I don’t like the colors and the look isn’t for me, plus I haven’t got along well with Callaway drivers after the honeymoon period. I’ll give this a swing to see what it’s like.

Since this is technically the rogue replacement and not the epic flash replacement they didn’t remove the weight track since rogue doesn’t have a weight track

Good point. I do understand the point of a weight track, but it seems (in my admittedly small sample size) most people go full draw, full fade or straight, which is reasonably addressed by movable weights and not a track.

Regarding the color, I do wonder what the rationale behind the color schemes the last two years has been. Is it visibility on tour/TV? I mean, you know who plays Callaway solely from the color schemes of the bag, headcover and driver these days.

I guess that is true the "body" of the head is quite similar without the inertia generator. I guess the SIM is similar to a rear diffuser on sports cars , helps with aerodynamics and horizontal stability.

Material is going to be the main areas of enhancement for clubs and balls. There are a few enhancements with face forgiveness and flexibility but we cant get the face any faster. I think Taylormade, Calllaway, and Mizuno all mention a material improvements from previous clubs and Cobra put more carbon on it.

I didn't realize it was the Rogue replacement that makes more sense I did miss the weight track but i guess it doesn't belong on this one anyway.

Looking at some more pics the standard mavrik has a different shape on the bottom where as the sub zero and max have more of the traditional shape. Max emphasizing forgiveness over speed similar to how the rogue was promoted as forgiving. SZ is focused on that spin reduction and surprised the shape here doesn’t match the standard.

With cor/ct being maxed out the brands need to find ways to improve/increase speed. Materials have been the go to method for awhile now. Lighter, stronger and of course with that comes effects on center of gravity so they have to find ways to ensure that gets in the right spot which is where TM has had to raise the crown and skirt on sim.

More weight reduction or relocating it to the best location will be the story year over year to make differences in clubs. should be interesting to see how far they really can go. I love the ability to move weights and position where you need it and this will only increase. Larger weights or more weight options for allow for different swings. I know there was a discussion i think on TXG where they mentioned removing the weight track cut a huge amount of weight that allowed the company to place put the difference in movable weights or weight reduction (not sure which driver).

Here are a few snips from Rick Shields video https://youtu.be/xoW60TuBIb8?t=203 to compare shape of each version

Watched videos from Shiels and TXG. Some interesting things in both. From a design/marketing/story aspect TXG touches on how the more Callaway gets time with AI the more they can improve the design of the face. They also touched on how with AI they can have a different face design for each of the mavrik models.  Rick mentioned one the Callaway info sent out they claim mavrik is 5 yards longer than Epic Flash. In Ricks head to head EF vs Mavrik he gained .8mph in ch speed, lost 2 yards in ball speed and lost ~2 yards in carry distance. While it’s only one test so far that I’ve seen his experience doesn’t match callaways claim. Will be interested to see TXG do a comparison despite mavrik not being a direct replacement.

Some things I’ll be interested in seeing play out over the year.

1) Callaway hasn’t reduced price of Epic Flash like they did to epic when rogue came out and to rogue when Epic Flash came out.
2) will they be able to sell anymore EF at $530 when they are claiming mavrik has improved flash face and is longer by 5 yards

3) more videos from txg comparing mavrik to ef and other offerings new and old.

I watched both those as well I noticed this year Rick has been on a kick to make a point of mentioning how minor any of the improvements are and I agree they are but that's the absolute need for Most wanted thousands of balls hit by tens of users over several days/weeks this also promotes getting fit yourself. The New drivers toute improvements but sometimes those improvement go the wrong way for players.  If you needed lower launch but the new driver is slightly higher with weight shifts when you may not get what you want.

Now I have nothing against Rick and he even mentioned this point in his podcast if you are against a product your data is inaccurate if your for a product you were paid off. I think its a fine line especially when we are in a world of clickbait titles. I do wish he would have shown how each clubs was hit if he had 2 mishits with the Mavrik it would easily screw those numbers that's why more data matters.

I hit it on Saturday. Not on a monitor, just 5 or so swings on the range. Looks very good at address, sounds something between Rogue and Flash. More muted than flash but more ping than Rogue. Feels very good. I imagine it will be a popular option.

Funny the dichotomy I take from that. On one had having thousands of balls hit by tens of users is invalid if each of us needs to get fit? Suggests who the users are will influence what's "most wanted..."

And while I agree TXG is superior to Shiels, it's not clear they take out mishits either. In the recent SIM video there were several thinned low spin, low launch line drives with the SIM (not the M5) they seemingly left in the data, that should have been thrown out statistically.

TXG has talked about this in several of their videos. Anything that they feel like was out of the norm otherwise they leave in heel, toe, high and low shots

I mentioned this in the 2020 driver thread I think, but the smaller of the two shops I frequent said they sold five Mavriks the first day they had the head in the fitting cart. Looks to definitely be a popular option.

My experience from hitting them all and ordering a Mavrik a few weeks ago was that they're all incredible drivers, they just aren't all incredible for me.  They are forgiving and have a lot of distance on misses, but you have to get fit and find the right clubhead for your miss.

I hit both the Standard and Sub Zero this weekend at my course. The Standard was very easy to hit but seemed to be a bit spinny. Liked the Sub Zero on good swing but on bad swings it seemed to dive out of the air. Rumors are there will be a Triple Diamond version around April that will be between the two... May be a better option, but hate that they release 3 heads and then halfway through the season another (if the rumor is true)

Some new guy at the club showed up early today and we immediately let him go off first as a single. We chatted a bit and I noticed his bag was loaded with new stuff.

ping i210 irons

glide wedges

epic flash driver and 3 woods

maveric driver and 3 woods

i asked about the Mavericks and he said the driver was ok, not that different in results, but he raves about the maverick 3 wood. He said it beat his “fitted” flash 3 wood by 30 yards... he was adamant about how spectacular it was... says he rolled it out 265... I said that would go farther than my driver then haha...

well see what others report as the days roll by...

I am a Ping Driver guy, but the Mavrik Max that I just played a round with far exceeds the G410 or G400max in forgiveness and distance. Played a 10.5 with a Riptide off of the shelf.  I have never seen a Callaway driver that was easier to hit than a Ping. Callaway has nailed it. The story with this driver is forgiveness and distance  away form the center of the face.

Will depend on the player;  I hit the 410 much better than the Mavriks.

I demo'd all 3 Mavrik drivers vs my Epic Flash gamer and felt like the standard was the best of the 3.  None I felt were as good as the Flash, they seemed to produce a lot more spin for me but that might have more to do with the shaft in the demo drivers.  It was strange that for both myself and the guy doing the fitting the Sub Zero had a really high ball flight.

Now I did just pick up the 15 degree fairway wood and that club is unbelievable.  Really easy to get up even on shots low in the face.  I can't be happier with it.  Plus, I only had to come out of pocket about $70 because I won some shop credit in a Super Bowl pool (thanks Mahomes for for TD at the end of the first)!

Did you put your shaft in the mavrik?

No, at the time I didn't give a ton of thought to switch them out.  I might mess around with it in the next week.  The shop is good about letting me try things out so I'll grab the Mavrik heads and try them with my shaft.  We were really out there for my son who was getting fit for irons.  Getting to play around with the different Mavrik heads was just bonus.

I demo’d the mavrik max tonight and it was amazing. First swing off the rack with out any adjustment and it went 225. Not afraid to admit that is 3 yards longer than my best drive recorded on arccos with my 410 plus last year. I’m heading back tomorrow and get fit for it and see where we can get it. Hit 5 shots all over 215 and all fairway finders.. I’m impressed.

Make sure you take your 410 to compare side by side on the launch monitor.   Not saying the mavrik isn't longer,  but unless you are comparing side by side you won't ever know.

Just wrapped up testing and baselined with my 410 as suggested. Longest with 410 was 225, avg 217. Learned that from following this group.

mavrik with evenflow riptide 50 shaft longest was 237 with ball speed consistently 130 avg 227. Tried all three heads, multiple shafts l, threw in the speed zone and the mavrik max with set up just clicked for me.

The fitter and I were both floored at how different the results were vs the other combinations .

Reply , total distance. Was getting good roll out with both. 223 was longest carry if I recall from mavrik.
