Popular Post Jmikecpa
After a few drinks with SWMBO and a text exchange with a friend of mine that is a PXG staffer I was set up for a full PXG bag fitting for January 16th at Liberty National GC in NJ. It has been a few years since I went for a complete fitting and now that I am self employed I have some time on my hands. For comparison here is what I currently have in the bag: Driver: Titleist TS3 9.5* with an AD DI 7x 3 Wood: Titleist TS2 with an AD GT 8x Hybrid: Titleist 818 H2 19* AD DI 95x Irons: Titleist 716 TMB 4 - PW TTDG AMT S300 Wedges: Vokey SM7 50*, 54* and 58* with TTDG S300s Overall I am pretty happy with this bag and have been playing the irons on and off for a few years with some really good results. The driver and 3 wood are good but I know could be better in terms of numbers but I hit a lot of fairways with them. My goals for the fitting are to fit the driver with a lighter shaft and not sacrifice the dispersion of my TS3 and get the fairway woods set up to kill spin off the tee. I play in a lot of wind most days and being able to flight fairway woods down is key for me, something that I have not been able to find with my current set up. For the irons I plan to go full graphite in the set to help protect my elbow a bit and maybe get another year or two playing before I have to go under the knife. The wedges and putter are the two areas that I have zero hopes for as I hit my Vokeys well and I really don't need another putter. I will end up with a full bag due to the promo they are running for the full bag and figure I could dump what I don't want/need based on the fitting and get some of my cost back. I will do my best to get some pictures and post numbers as well as give you my thoughts after the fitting. Any questions you have or things you would like to see fire away and I will again do my best to accommodate. fixyurdivot
I'd do a club fitting every week if I could... their both interesting and fun. I suspect for near scratch players the refining and down select process gets much more difficult however - maybe not? It will be interesting to see what you find out. cnosil, MGoBlue100 and Golfspy_CG2 3 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)
Popular Post Jmikecpa
So I am back from my fitting. Not even sure where to start as this was like no other experience that I have had getting fit for golf clubs. I guess first, my apologies as I didn’t take any pictures. The fitting was fun but very business like which was a good thing. The first comment that I can make is that the studio and the technology was top notch and the fitter was one of the best that I have ever dealt with. Name a shaft, any shaft and they more than likely have it available to hit. The second comment would be that I left with a bag that if I had my pick to start I wouldn’t have ended up where I did. This is not a bad thing at all and we actually built a bag that has purpose behind it. My main goal going in was irons that flight down and hitting fairways. Also wanted to see if I could do graphite through the bag as an option. So what did I get. Let’s go top down....Driver: I went with the 0811 XF with a Graphite Design AD VR 6x. We went with the 10.5* head lofted down to 9* to get the open look at address. I was impressed that the fitter was not only able to get me into a driver that ticked all the boxes for me. Ball speed was in the mid 160s with great launch and spin numbers. 3 wood: This was one that we spent a lot of time on to get right. I wanted something that was a low spin monster off the tee but I could launch up when I needed it to. Talk about two polar opposite asks on this one. I lost count of the shafts that I hit but started with a HZRDUS Yellow smile, a Fuji TS, Atmos, and a few Graphite Design shafts before settling on the final combo. Ended up with an 0341x with the low spin setting and a Graphite Design AD TP 7x. Hybrid: Was between hybrid and five wood going in and once I saw the hybrid I was sold. These clubs just look great at address. This may have been the easiest to fit with just one shaft and I was sold. Went with the 19* 0317x with a KBS Proto 95x. Irons: This was the part I got completely wrong in what I wanted coming in. I was thinking of a blended set between the P model and the T model with graphite. The only pet that was right was it was a blended set. I went with the 0311 T in the 4,5 and 6 with 0311 ST in the 7,8,9 and PW. For gapping the ST will be bent 1* strong. The shafts we went with were KBS $ Taper 130x and that was a shock to me. We tried every graphite option they had and we just could not get the desired launch, spin and peak height into the window that I wanted. My goal is to flight the ball lower and I think we built a set that stock shots fly where I want them and I can still hit them up if I need to. Wedges: Went with the new Sugar Daddy wedges in 50*, 54* and 60*. The 50 has the $ Taper 130x and the 54 and 60 have TTDG S400s. I will say that the 58* with 7* of bounce shocked with with just how versatile it is. The grind is very unique and it was the shock of the bag to me. Putter: Gen 2 Spitfire with a double bend shaft at 34”. Was the best of the lot for me and really was just a throw in to get the full back deal. Come spring and my T Squared is back in the bag. Well the last thing that anyone needs to talk about with PXG is price. I am not putting this out there for any other reason than for knowledge and comparison. I did the full bag promo that was 14 unique clubs, a bag and a hat which was just under $6k with the Sugar Daddy wedges. If you go with the forged wedges the price is about $500 lower. The shafts in the top end of the bag were a slight upcharge but much less than half of what other OEMs charge for the same shaft. Overall I am happy with the experience and have a bag that was built top to bottom for what I wanted and my game. For me, this was a once in a lifetime shot to do something that I always wanted to do and PXG did not disappoint. They were dead on specs from the build sheet. what impressed me was the fitter there came up with the same lie specs I have used on 3 sets of clubs I built him. Seriously I have only hit his 50* wedge one time and I liked it in fact too darn much. He did give me the PXG hat and it is hanging up because I do not sail under false colors. I have been known to wear it out to eat but never to the course That's a pretty big endorsement of their work, coming from you. BTW, love that saying, do not sail under false colors!! I have been known to wear it out to eat but never to the courseI was very impressed with the fitting. I have been fit essentially by the same person for over 20 years and he just knows my game. My PXG fitter took a lot of time to get to know what I wanted out of each part of my bag and also took the time to watch me hit shots. On 18 at my club i set up way right and essentially hit a pull into the middle of the fairway, helps me avoid a hook into the junk. I hit that shot three to four times a week and we made sure the driver did that. He also asked what was my favorite driver over the last five years and it was hands down my Titleist 915 D2 with a Kiyoshi Black. Only knock was I had a tendency to over cook it when I went after it. We built a more forgiving fade bias version of the driver I hit the best over the last five years. I hit the low spin driver and we struggled to get consistent numbers that would keep the ball in the air. Most fitters would just say the peak numbers were good so it should be fine. Giving the sticks a go tomorrow for indoor golf. Should be a decent test before heading outdoors on Monday.
