Hi Spies! I haven't been active on here in a bit, but my wife and I just had our first child in October. But this recent warm weather has me thinking about spring.

Who is looking to play more, have more fun, and see a variety of courses?

I don't have a regular game, but always looking to play and will go anywhere within an hour. I live in near westside suburbs, so anywhere from Mentor to Ravenna, Canton to Vermillion is all in play for me. I'll try to post here or start a thread whenever I make a tee time. Hope to see some spies on the course!

Congrats on the birth of your first! Lots of great courses within an hour of your location. I assume you're in the Lakewood area?

FYI Sawmill in Huron was bought by Cedar Fair (owners of Cedar Point) last year and are pumping a bunch of money into it. I live in the Islands area - just over an hour away so can meet up with you. I also have access to Plum Brook CC and my home course Catawba Island Club.

Thank you! Yes I am right around there, Big Met is about 3 minutes from me, but I don't play it a ton. Head lots of great things about Sawmill, and I'd love to get out at Plum Brook, could have played it through NOGA last year but missed it. I've played Thunderbird Hills and Eagle Creek out for way.

So made the mistake of watching WGC-Mexico and the warm weather has me wishing for the season to start. But this year I'll be picking my spots, even though there were quite a few courses that opened up. In years past, I'd be out there.

So with my mind going, what is everyone's goals for the season? Or what are you thinking about? What are you looking forward to?

Just trying to keep this thread in everyone's mind...

Looks like tomorrow's weather (Wednesday Feb 26th) will dampen your spirits especially for those in the snow belt.

My goals - Drop 6 off of my Index by mid summer.

Currently working on strength and swing training.-looking to add 5 mph to my SS.  That'll get me more GIR's.

As soon as the weather warms up a bit, I'll be outside doing chipping and putting practice.

Thanks for the bump.

Apparently I missed this post from January!

Off the top of my head, some of my favorites are

Boulder Creek in Streetsboro (I like the layout, but don't like the price so I don't play there often)
Windmill Lakes in Ravenna (good test)
Good Park in West Akron (really good test - very mature trees make fairways play narrower)
Turkeyfoot Lake in South Akron (best greens in the area, IMO)
Roses Run in Stow (not terribly popular anymore, with rumors of sales/closing, condition not as good as it once was, but I always enjoy it)
The Quarry in East Canton (really nice course, but pricey)

I agree with you on all that. Boulder you can find deals during the week. It's sad to see Roses Run go downhill a bit, but it's still a great layout and not overpriced. Turkeyfoot is always a good time. I also like Fox Den, just seem to always play well there.

My league plays at Fox Den. Even though it's pretty short, you generally have to be pretty accurate to play well there.

Grew up out in the snow belt, but the west side doesn't get nearly as much snow. Still this is Ohio and I know not to get my hopes up till around Masters weekend.

This year is all about IDGAF golf. With the baby, practice time will be hard to come by, so just gonna try to play weekly. I just want to go out and enjoy it, whether with family, friends, spies, or alone. Forget competition, just play baby.

If there's anything specific to work on it's FW & Hybrid play, and maybe putting. I was an Evenroll tester, so see if that can unseat my current Odyssey #7.

It's apparently owned/operated by the same people as Shale Creek in Medina, if you've ever played there. I haven't, but have heard nothing but great things about it.

Favorite courses west of you @Tsmithjr9

Eagle Creek in Norwalk and previously mentioned Plum Brook and CIC. All three are pretty challenging and unique in there own way. FYI the Regional USGA Open qualifier will be at CIC the first week in May.

Also, I met one of the managers from Sawmill a few weeks ago. She mentioned that Cedar Fair was pumping a couple of million +  into the course. They're redoing 2 of the lake Erie adjacent holes plus all of the bunkers. It'll be interesting to see the improvements.

Anything around Elyria or Lorain? Or is that a bit out of your usual range? I know there's not much south of there. There's the new Valley of the Eagles. It's Nicklaus design (not Jack himself, but his company)

We're definitely putting this one on the list, although it looks a bit easier that our (CIC) course (Arthur Hills loves bunkers).  https://www.valleyeagles.com/scorecard/. From the Blue's it's 6375 yds and a rating of 71.5/125. Ours from the similar yardage (whites) is 6275  and a slope rating of 70.7/133. Looks pretty in the pics.

I get it.my wife and I played the day after Christmas at Thunderbird Hills. We'll be talking about that forever.

Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy
That's nice. My daughter was born in October so last year was cut short too.

Just got this from  TDGA

From:        The Toledo District Golf Association

Date:         March 30, 2020

To:             Members of the TDGA Golfing Community

Subject:    COVID-19 Update

Good Morning from the TDGA,

It's been a turbulent week for the golf industry not only in Ohio, but all over the world. As you probably know, on March 28, 2020 the Ohio Health Department mandated that all golf courses close. This message came to us just a day after Dr. Amy Akton indicated that it was OK to play golf. Then on March 29. 2020, the Health Department reversed itself and now says courses may open.

If you play, please follow social distancing practices as outlined in the Ohio Stay at Home order. Please do not gather around picnic tables or in the parking lot for post round get togethers. Please do your part to contain the spread of this very deadly disease.

A similar notice came around here. I guess on Wed & Thurs a lot of courses were not following the guidelines - guys hanging out drinking on patios, multiple riders to a cart etc. Gotta follow simple rules or everyone will be shut down. Golf and go home, it isn't that hard.

Have been playing roughly 1-2x a week. Lots of walking a no carts. It’s been a little bit of a joy to play with the raised cups. Hopefully everyone can follow the rules so we can continue to play.

my big goal for this year is becoming more accurate with my drives off the tee, trying to get rid of the over the top swing!

playing airport greens tomorrow for a refresher. Madison and painesville country club I’ve heard are currently in great shape for the early rounds

played manakiki 2 weeks ago. Decent shape for the weather but nothing spectacular
