Loft-jacked distance irons

... I have always felt that way and don't blame Titleist or any OEM for going that route. Although I admit I was happy when I figured out to add one more club for my Amp Forged/Fly Z+/Forged Tours that have a 44* pw instead of my old traditional 48* I had played for many years. So I finally got to where I did not have to say "OK, 155 is a full 8 iron sooooo a full 9 iron with my FT's" and I could just think "OK, 155 is 9 iron". And weakening my P790's by 1* produced very similar distances so no transposing necessary. But dayum a 38* pw and then all the other corresponding much stronger lofts would take an abacus for me to figure out which club to hit LOL. Of course to be fair, I am not the target audience for jacked lofts in T400's or T300's or even T200's so it was just an observation.

Yeah. 38° PW is a little outlandish, I will agree with you on that.

That’s where my GI Wedge thread came from. Are the t400 players going to use the set wedges or get a Vokey?

... Ah Oh. I may have to look into a Get Off My Lawn sign. I just saw the Titleist T400 PW is ... 38*. Then all you have to do is add a 43* W and then a 49* W2 and then a 55* W3 and round out your five wedges with a 60* LW (or W4). I would write more but I think I need time to digest this information and then hopefully post my thoughts before someone introduces a full set of wedges starting with a 20* PW then a 23* W1, 26* W2, 29* W3, 33* W4, 38* W5, 43* W6, 49* W7, 55* W8 and a 60* W9.

At this rate manufacturers should just go to selling individual clubs with blank soles. They would also provide a set of shaft labels so you could label each club however you want.

That’s actually a good idea.
I used to play with a guy a decade ago who had the distance of each club labeled on the shafts, he didn’t care what the club number was.

I did that the first year, but don't even think about it anymore.  The one thing that changed significantly for me was hitting a club off the ground vs hitting off a tee.  My turf is firm, and with a slower swing speed I don't/can't take a divot, so shots are low on the club face.  Off a tee I hit the ball more in the sweet spot which results in higher trajectory and more distance.  I have two carry numbers for each club.

As much as I like these SGI clubs, I would consider a change for this reason.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I have a laminated card I carry in my pocket with carry distance information. For wedges it lists full, half swing normal stance, half swing narrow stance, and finesse.

It is maddening to switch between my Wilson D7's (28*- 7 iron)  and Nike Pro Combos (34* 7 iron).  If only I could remember how to use what my math professors tried to drill into my wandering college brain not so many years ago.

Too bad they don't just stamp lofts on the soles, but they'd never do that or the marketing BS would have to stop completely.

Ben Hogan brand tried that and it didn’t work and they have now gone to irons numbers.

I know it's part science (lower CG does have an effect but it doesn't force loft changes) and largely marketing BS, easy to prove.

I'm not sure it's even as much science as you're giving credit for.  CGs aren't really lower.

Whole thing doesn't affect me much.  I'm playing old stuff, and probably have enough old stuff to last me until I can no longer play.  🙂

I helped a friend of mine do a card like that and then laminated it for him. he is getting up there in age and can not remember what club he hits how far. But he darn near plays everyday at age 85. LOL he plays in 3 different senior golf leagues
