Luxury Headcovers?

ZenGolfer

Recommended Posts

Lately Ive been looking at some of the headcovers from companies like Seamus and Dormie Workshop. They have some really cool designs, I especially like Dormie's, "stay calm and hit bombs" with the A10 warthog paint scheme design on it and the, "keep calm and putt on" putter cover. I love the iconic history of the slogan that they are based on.
I actually almost pulled the trigger on the full set but when I saw that I was going to be spending over $300 on headcovers, I told myself that I was crazy and didnt.
So, that begs the question: luxury headcovers, worth it? Ive got a couple Jan Craig knit headcovers but I think I only paid $50 for each of them and I cringed even at that.
I mean, look, Im a man who enjoys the finer things in life from time to time but when I get to the point where Im spending hundreds of dollars on golf club headcovers, I dont know about that.

I am a fan of The Buck Club and Sugarloaf Social Club. More than anything, it’s for a hat because that’s as much as I’m comfortable spending.

This past year, TBC went HAM on their selection of custom Seamus hardcovers. Every week it felt like a new drop and new combos. They’re really nice but not for me.

Personally, I want something basic and not flashy on my woods. It’s less appealing to potential thieves.

At the end of the day, they’re worth as much as someone is willing to pay and Seamus certainly has a market.

Some of the Dormie covers can get up to 2 bills, same with Blood Sweat and Thread.  Much like PXG equipment there are people that can do it and those that choose to spend their money on other things.

If you want a nice cover with custom options for a decent price check out Bestgrips.  Zach does amazing work and his prices for custom are the same as others for stock.  Also you don't have to buy them all at once.  Get a driver now, pick up a fairway later etc...  Also custom headcovers make great birthday, father's day, anniversary presents if you have people around that give you presents.

All that said, yeah I dropped $300+ for a custom driver cover plus 4 hybrid covers.  Full Transformers themed set.  Fast forward 2 seasons and now I play 2 fairway's and one hybrid so I have some nice hybrid covers sitting in the closet.

I've grown partial to PRG over the past year or so, after writing the blog post on its owner, Stephen Riley. He started the company with his mom, who used to work for Titleist.

Most of their stuff is for golf courses, resorts and the like, so if you've ever picked up a head cover at a destination course as a souvenir, chances are it's a PRG. They're starting up their own line called Originals - decent price, styles aren't my cup of tea, but the quality is incredible.

I certainly don't have a problem with what companies charge for products such as this. It's still a free country for a while longer it seems. Custom & expensive head-covers are not my thing. But if it's your thing I say load up- have a nice day. 🇺🇸

Those fancy headcovers cost more than the clubs that I would use them on. So not a good idea.

All my headcovers are aftermaket brands. I don’t necessarily consider $150 for a leather headcover nor the Scott cameron ones at $76 or $96 to be luxury, but luxury brands regardless of consumer good varies from person to person.

I much prefer to have a non oem branded cover and if I can afford what I want I buy it, if not I wait or just pass. Same goes for things related to my workout gear.

For what you could pay for a new driver spending $200+ for a high quality leather head over could seem like a bargain.  Also consider the  headcover will probably outlast numerous drivers over its lifespan.

I wouldn't use "luxury" to describe them, but I've taken to using knit headcovers from Sunfish.  Bought some monkey and sock monkey covers, intending to share with the wife.  I thought she'd go for the monkey, but sock monkey is her choice, so I am now monkey boy, LOL.   I've since filled out a full set for each of us.

Also got a plain red and black knit headcover to use with persimmons.

Have thought about something interesting for putter, but not sold on the idea yet...

... If you belong to a CC or play a course you are very familiar with, nice head covers are never a problem. My experience covers 30 years so the evidence is anacdotal and an extremely small % so keep that in mind. I was writing a review of Piretti putters when they first came out and had one in my bag along with the very stylish head cover proudly announcing a Peritti was underneath. At a muni, I went to the bathroom warming up at the range and when I returned my head cover along with the $400 putter underneath was gone. I have been working at or going to ranges my whole life and never had anything stolen until that day. I reported it and was told Scotty head covers occasionally are stolen but rarely the putter too.

... And years later at Encino in LA I had my black driver leather head cover stolen, again when using the bathroom at the turn.  30 years of playing golf and well over 100-200 rounds a year and only 2 thefts, but that was enough to cure me of nice head covers. Now I just use the OEM cover on my woods and a generic head cover on my putter. I had my original Bobby Grace stolen but it was my fault as I left it next to the 18th green after chipping in for an eagle and the guys I was playing with made such a fuss about it I forgot my putter lying in the rough next to the bunker. I went to my car and saw it was gone after breaking down my remote cart and lifting the bag into the trunk, so only a few groups had gone thru. Went to the clubhouse and left my name and number but it never showed up. It took me almost a year to replace it so the last thing I want to do is advertise a Bobby Grace putter is under the head cover.

I just hate reading and hearing about stolen/thief of golf equipment. Especially when it occurs at a golf course. I just don't get it. Same with vandalism anytime or any place. There were some criminals dressed as golfers at local muni last spring. They'd hang around the putting green watching when guys with push carts were making the turn went inside - then they'd walk over - grab the cart and away they went to the parking lot and gone! In addition to the golf equipment they undoubtedly made off with wallets, watches, keys, stuff. Probably to a pawn shop. 😡

I'm always in this dilemma - I'm not a fan of the branded head covers that come with my clubs - I find them to be extra, unnecessary weight when i carry clubs and a buddy a few years back lost his bag full of shiny new Taylor-made clubs (and TM bag) that had the OEM covers on them.  I've gone cheap and cheerful but was dismayed by how many folks commented on the crap quality head covers :-) So I've been getting some of the brands mentioned and it has seemed like a solution to the (first world) problems I've had with head covers.  Luckily I've been able to find good leather at reasonable prices in simple designs (Sunfish for example).  Recently I've found some super light, waterproof tech material covers offered by a local supplier here in Canada (Hathaway) and they have been a great experience - seems like I've spent TOOOOO long thinking about head covers overall though

I hear you loud and clear.  In fairness, I do have Clemson bag and I like a little variety.

I did have Clemson fairway covers that came with my Jones Clemson bag, but I lost one and the other won't stay on a club so it's been retired.  I haven't found a Clemson cover that I've liked enough to put in the bag since.  Those are the best ones that I have seen though!

I'll be the first to admit I've gotten too hooked to the headcover game and spent too much money on them in the last couple years (don't tell my wife ). I typically like covers that are high quality but more conversation starters than the high-end / fancy look.

I've become a big fan of Gibbons Handmade / American Flatsticks - most are limited run and the chase can be annoying (not as annoying as Swag, but still gotta be quick), but I'm happy with the result. My AFS collection is in pic #1 - many of the covers also have matching towels available.

Some of my favorite brands and/or brands I like to track on the Gram (I have at least one from nearly all of them):
-Dormie (still waiting on my Dormie x Asher green jacket cover to show up - excited for that one)
-Gibbons Handmade / American Flatsticks
-Blue Birdie Golf
-Pins & Aces (most less than $50)
-Rawhide (haven't bought from them but they post great custom designs)

I've also made it a hobby to make my own - I use an Izzo set I bought on clearance for something like $15 and slide them into gutted dog toys so they're interchangeable (see pic 2: Reagan is from Pins & Aces, Bill and Putin homemade - I often go with Trump, Hillary and Putin as the "2016 election" bag).

I am not sure why i even buy headcovers. I take it off at the beginning of the round and throw them in the net storage at the bottom of my pushcart and then put them back on before the clubs go in the trunk at the end of the round.

... Just remember the head covers protect your shafts as much or more than your club heads. Iron heads banging against a premium shaft is a recipe for dissaster. A scratch on a wood is just cosmetic but scratches in the same place on your shafts can result in breakage.

Makes sense. My clubs don't really bang into each other much with my bag/push cart combo.

... You might be surprised how much heads can rub our bang into shafts with a push cart. Over time it makes a difference. I broke my original YS6 when they became popular carrying back then and didn't use head covers. Been using them ever since.

So true.

An ex’s brother had a shaft break on his G30 like a toothpick because he never used his headcover. I noticed that his irons gentle tapped right around the spot that broke when he would walk. After finding him a good deal on a replacement shaft, I walked him through why his original broke.

He used a headcover with the new shaft for a month tops. What do you know, the replacement broke in the same spot within months of him ditching his headcover again. Because of that he swears Ping “makes a bad shaft”.  🤦‍♂️

this is why i even have a cover for my driving iron. the head is hollow, so i really don’t want that taking any abuse, but it’s got a graphite shaft, so i make sure that stays covered at all costs
