High Handicaper 1st Fitting (share yours)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I started playing about 1 year and 4 months ago. I'm taking lessons and currently am a 33.5 handicaper.

I was looking to get fitted once i lowered my handicap a little.

Recently i had surgery on my knee and as i recovery i find it suitable to get fitted as soon as i'm ok.

Just wanted to know from you guys how were your first fitting experiences? Did you came out happy and really fullfilled? Any bad experiences? Did you get a clear idea of which clubs you should buy? Learned anything about your swing that helped you along the way?

Hope to "hear" from you guys! Thanks.

I got fitted two years ago, my handicap was the same ballpark as yours at the time.  I tried two different fitters.

The first was a local branch of a large golf retail chain at a club I played at.  My experience was to put it politely 'valuable'.  I was informed that I 'Wasn't old enough for graphite shafts yet' without being measured.  I only tried a couple of types of irons, then he said 'try the Wilsons'.  And yes, to be fair, they did perform a little better than the others I tried, he then said 'Ok , the Wilsons is then'.  At which point, having only tried 3 models I felt very 'steered' towards what he wanted to sell.  it was a similar story with the woods too.  I walked away feeling like I'd had a pushy sales pitch, not a 'fitting'.

My second fitting was at a specialist fitter.  A brief chat about what I wanted and budget etc on the phone when making my appointment and he said 'come with an open mind, you may well end up with a mixed bag'.  On the day, first off he measured my swing on the Mizuno 'thingy' to get the shaft options (Turned out my best options were graphite).  Then we started testing irons, he said 'try not to look what they are so it doesn't influence you, I want to pinpoint what works best'  I tried maybe 10 or so different models.  We then repeated the process with hybrids, fairways and driver.

I ended up with all the same brand in the end, but only because that's what worked best for me.

I didn't get a 'full tour player' type fitting (tweaking individual loft and lie etc for each club).  I was (and still am) far too inconsistent for that. But what I did get was the confidence that what bought was the best option for me for my budget..   The right heads, with the right shaft, in the right length, and the right lie angles for me.  I couldn't realistically have expected more than that, and the prices were the same as I would have paid at the first place too.  Yes I had to wait a few weeks as he ordered the bits specially and built the clubs himself, but it was worth it.

In short... find a specialist fitter if you can, rather than a 'fitter'/sales assistant that gets incentivised to fit you into what they have in stock.

People on here will probably be surprised to hear that none of the clubs in my bag were specifically fit for me.   I have had one fitting at club champion mostly to help me to learn more about my swing and how close the clubs in my bag were.  That fitting was 2 years ago.  Prior to that, and still now, I educated myself on clubs, shafts, and launch numbers and tried lots of different clubs.  I did the Mizuno shaft optimizer and entered information into the various shaft manufacturers websites to see what they recommended.   I went to big box stores to try clubs and see how they worked.  Now I am fortunate to have access to some time on a GC Quad to continue testing combinations.    Are the clubs in my bag the best fit for me?  don't know,  but I would bet they are pretty close.  Knowledge is the key.  Understand club performance and ask questions.  That will help you evaluate the fitting and what equipment is being recommended for you.

My first fitting (May 2019) came after playing about 7 years. Went to a highly recommended independent fitter that carried all of the major brands. The real benefit to me was with my long clubs, with a focus on dispersion. The fitter put a different 'stock' shaft into my 410 driver, took the 3 wood out of my bag and put in a Cobra 5 wood with a super lite shaft along with a Ping 9 wood. His recommendations for the irons was a slight benefit in dispersion and distance but did recommend to take my 4 and 5 irons out and substitute with 2 - 410 hybrids. On my irons I stayed with what I have (C300's). Overall a very valuable experience. FYI the Trackman results for each of these clubs was eye opening - especially the difference between carry and total distance.

However, if your looking for a big drop from the 30's unless your clubs are way off, you might get more benefit from lessons. And a good instructor could also tell if your clubs are off.

I'm still trying to play consistently in the 80's but it wasn't that long ago that I was challenged to break 100. In retrospect if I had to start all over again (given I had a decent bag) I would tell myself to:

1. Take a few lessons and practice a lot - almost becoming obsessive about it and not just driver but the entire bag including short game (wedges and putter). Fyi my practice starting out was always focused on driver.

2. Have a clear understanding of average distances (carry and total) for each club. I now carry a card that list every club with those distances. I use the card all the time, especially with my wedges.

3. Read up on course strategy and book a lesson where you play 9 or 18 with your instructor.

4. Practice and play with better players.

I tend to agree with Tony unless your clubs are way off optimal fit.  A competent teacher will likely spot that however - so go with more lessons then onto a fitting.  I have had three fittings and they have all been good. The two iron fittings showing very close results with respect to numbers - which gave me confidence that the new LM technology is reliable.

I think a fitting is a great way to learn a couple things about your swing. Obviously it won't replace real lessons, but most fitters are so knowledgeable that a few pointers could be enough to change your game.

You have the more expensive, high-end fittings like jlukes, where it's all about squeezing the last inch of performance.

Then you have "regular" fittings done by big box stores or the OEM at demo days, which are usually free, but they only sell your their products.

Somewhere in the middle you might find independent fitters, who carry different vendors, but their repertoire is not as complete as the high-end ones and you probably won't have access to the most exotic shafts, etc. These usually charge $150-200 to fit a whole bag, but will credit it if you purchase from them.

So the question is: how much are you willing to spend?

I played about 1 year with off-the rack clubs, since I wasn't sure golf would be something for me. Once I had cleared that doubt, I went to a golf show where all OEMs had stuff to demo. I was about 30hcp at that time. I hit all the offerings from all major OEMs to get an idea on what's on the market and what I want (SGI, GI, CB, etc.)

I really liked the Mizuno MP59 so scheduled a fitting for them. Now... what is a 30hcp doing with that kind of irons? It probably hurt my game more than it helped. It's all about playing what makes you happy. At least I made sure shaft, length, loft and lie were a good match for my swing. IIRC, I played those irons for 4 years and my hcp went down to 19-20.

Fitted clubs are not magic tools that will erase your swing flaws, but they will provide ease of mind, so you can focus on your game instead of second-guessing whether there are clubs out there that you can hit further, straighter, etc.

Hope that helps!

Here is my fitting experience.  I hightly recommend True Spec in the States, TXG in canada, and Club Champion if one of the other two arent possible

https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/32210-jlukes-fitting-journey/

Thanks for sharing your experience! From what i read it's seem it was such a nice journey and process throughout..

I'll be fitted with a local professional here at Portugal. I don't have access to those you've recommended.

From what i see you're a very low handicaper and i find it fascinating how a fitting experience can be so different for so many different people and still very positive to all.

I liked that your fitter (obviously one of the best as you've mentioned) didn't even bother messing with what you had great in your bag and game (top of the bag).

My objective is that this fitting gets me started in therms of shaft flex, lie angles (i'm relatively short), grip size and iron head type (probably a chunkier type because i need the help).

Thanks man.

I had two different free fittings, one for irons, one for my driver & 3 wood. They were worth what I paid - all new clubs, no apparent scoring benefit. You could get lucky with a free fitting, but odds are against it and I’ll never do it again. Either get the best fitter you can find, pay up, or don’t bother IMO.

Lessons and practice can be more beneficial than a fitting, but for some fitting is more important.

So I am going to sign up for a driver fitting with True Spec, we’ll see how it goes. I am determined to be open minded, but I’m not expecting miracles as my swing just isn’t very repeatable. But I’d be thrilled, and willing to buy,  if there’s a better setup that makes a real difference in (side to side) dispersion.

Best of luck.

Yeah the closest i've gotten to a free fitting are the golf lessons that i have.

But still we don't have access to launch monitors so it's not data driven.

My swing is all over the place still so i'm curious to see how that will impact my fitting process.

Main objective is to get opinions on shaft flex and lenght, lie angles and iron type. That to buy my irons.

Man, wish you the best of luck with your True Spec fitting. By @jlukes experience it seems to be such a great facility! let us know how it went as i'll do with mine.

Thanks.

Seems like on your first experience your fitter/salesman had preconceived ideas and bias.

Hopefully i'll get the second one. A pro that just looks at data and knows what to get out of me with his professional experience.

My main objective at this point is the same as yours was. Get some irons with shaft, lies and head specs that hopefully are the best for me at this point.

You mentioned the confidence that you leave that fitting with! I think that's a real thing! And an objective as well.. To "know" that you have the right "weapons". Mainly to narrow it all to me and my work alone.

Thanks

I agree with you, knowledge is key! And i've been improving on that (as i said, been playing for not long).

We have pretty similar views on how we look at golf and improving our games...

My objective is not to get a lot better through equipment... I've always tought that the main reason would be the lessons and practice..

I need to buy some irons and i think the best would be to get the ones that are suited best for me as i do not intend to buy other ones for a while..

I'll go with an open mind and listen to the opinion of the fitter as to which clubs i should have in my bag is concerned.

I don't have access to launch monitors on a regular bases but i'll take your recommendation and go to a driving range that has them or a top tracer..

I think i'll go with game improvement or super game improvement irons but it's only because i think that there is so much offer that is almost impossible to not have something that suits my eye in this categories.. i agree with you, clubs are expensive so you should love your irons and the way they look!

I intend to get a set that i love but also gives me confidence that i have the right specs dialed in as best as possible.

I also am eager to receive another opinion (by the fitter) on my swing. Mainly the feedback i have is given by my instructor and sometimes it's good to listen to another person, different ideas and ways of communicating

I recommend demo'ing some new clubs if possible prior to the fitting to help eliminate a few models which don't work for you if you are considering irons from multiple categories. (GI and SGI, etc.) It could be difficult to hit 6-10 different irons and then progress through shaft fitting and length/lie in one session, especially coming off surgery.

You should consider the amount of physical rehab your knee will require. This will lead to increasing club speed over the next year or 2 depending on the severity of the injury and surgery. Combine that with the potential to drop 15 shots off your handicap through lessons and practice - and it will increase the chance of this year's "fit" becoming outdated relatively quickly (2 years).

I returned to the game in my mid 20s at which point I would have been in a 30-40 handicap range and purchased a GI set that went on sale at a big box store after I hit them well during a demo. I eventually got fit for irons when I approached a 15 handicap after 3-4 years of playing 15+ rounds, 10-20 practice sessions, and 1-3 lessons per year. Over this time, I read tons of material online about clubs, shafts, balls, fitting information, and completed static fittings using the PING online tool as well as in stores. Without that knowledge I feel it would be more likely to be pushed toward a certain club by a fitter or not be able to identify a bad fitter versus an OK or good one. Do you know what good spin rates, peak heights, and descent angles are for an iron set?

This experience allowed me to self-fit a driver using launch monitors while demoing clubs at big box stores and eventually buy the fit driver from an end of season sale which saved me $400-500 compared to a friend who went to a fitter and bought a full price "custom fit" driver (1/4" short, no up-charge shaft).

Your play will improve faster through buying a used set and putting the difference towards 1-2 years of lessons and even faster if you get some workout routines on strength and speed training. BUT - If you can afford both fit clubs and lessons, go for it. (And potentially another set of fit clubs in 2-3 years...)

My first fitting was terrible. I didn't come to realize that until 6 months later. I had gone into that original fitting knowing very little about club fitting. The fitter took some static measurements, had me hit some with my current 7 iron, and then had me swing with a swing speed radar. The fitter said I should fit into a X flex because my 7 irons swing speed was 85mph. I then tried a Ping iron and a Mizuno. I asked to try a few other brands but they said they didn't have those. The fitter then had me try a few different weighted X-flex shafts and asked me which one felt best. There wasn't any discussion or review of the launch monitor numbers at all, or any different discussion about the differences between shafts in X-Flex. I ended up getting fit into JPX 919 Hot Metals with C Taper Lite X-flex shafts.

Step forward to today, where I now know more about clubs, shafts, etc. Went to a fitting at Golftec, and talked through my current issues: low trajectory, fighting the pulls and pull hooks. I tried lighter weight shafts in steel flex, and my trajectory improved and my dispersion improved. The pull hooks disappeared and actually turned into small fades, which I actually prefer. After trying the lighter weight shaft in the 919 Hot Metal, I then tried a similar shaft in the Callaway Mavrik Max. I started to hit bombs with that, 170 yard carry with better dispersion. The Callaway Mavrik Max in the lighter weight shaft is a much better fit for me.

I was fitted for irons a year ago by my instructor, who is Mizuno certified. The process went smoothly, probably easier since my instructor knows my swing.

I ended up with 919 Hot Metals, 2* upright with graphite shafts for my arthritic joints. We also went through my woods and ended up reshafting them to better suit.

The result: much better ball striking and no aching hands and shoulder. Was definitely worth the money and time!

Hi guys,

Just wanted you guys to know that i have chosen not to get fitted at least for now.

The main reason is that i needed to buy irons and the fitting would take away some of the money on the irons budget. I've chosen to get fitted later.

I'll do a WIMB soon.. thanks to all!

My fitting experience was awesome. Was a promotional and was actually free which was great but I would have paid (and will in the future if needed) full price if not more.

Fitting was through True Spec golf. I went in really looking at what I was going to need for wedges. Spent 4 hours and went through my entire bag (including putter). Came to find out my driver was fit well for me nothing needed. Had suggestions on irons (not expected but ended up with a consistent 20 extra yards from my 6 iron j was fitted for).

The best aspects of the fitting were the fitters explanation. He explained why Certain shafts worked for me, what my swing path was and why I have a slight fade. Also explained why the wedges were fitted for me(I tend to dig with wedges, fitted me for CBX2 wedges which counteract that). Lastly he flattened the lie on my putter.

overall worth every penny highly recommend.
