Mr. 82
I arrived at my golf club at 2:20 pm, as Mickelson was getting set to play the 6th hole in the final round. I warmed up on the range, and played 18 holes in 2:45 and when I got back in my car to go home Mickelson was on the 15th hole at approximately 5:30 pm. I had a warm up range session and walked 18 holes in the same amount of time as these pros played 9 holes. I made the comment to my friend that if I was ever offered an invite to play in the Pebble Beach Pro Am I would turn it down. 6 hour rounds are insane, no matter at what golf course, tournament, or level of golf you are playing in. Not that it will ever happen, but if I was a PGA Tour pro and had the option of picking events, and skipping others, I would skip Pebble Beach because of the abhorrent pace of play involved. It's a giant circus sideshow every year, so that Bill Murray and company can entertain the crowds with everything but playing actual golf. Look, I get it, some people live for this sort of nonsense, but I guess I am not one of them, and apparently the top players in the world agree with me. Was totally driving him, and apparently everyone except Jordan Spieth, nuts all day. The scoring average was well over +2 for the day, so Phil wasn't playing all that bad. Factor in how tiny those greens are at Pebble and I think he did an amazing job posting the score that he did. Why do we always point to the arrow when we have a "bad round", rather than look a little further at what the underlying issues of a "bad round" are? For example, I was getting really pissed with a few of my irons yesterday, because I was hooking them something fierce. Cost me a couple of bogeys, until I simply moved a bit closer to the ball, and all of a sudden the hook is gone. Well duh, nothing wrong with my irons. There might be something wrong with the moron hitting those irons. In fact, I'm fairly certain it's the moron hitting those irons. But having to play in 20 mph winds on a course where the greens require extreme precision is a recipe for an average score well above par. No shame in anything Phil did yesterday. I don't totally disagree. I am also looking at the small sample size of the events he has played this year. he had issues about both the farmers and in Dubai with iron distance control. Friday and Saturday he was completely throwing darts then today with the wind, and pressure, I am wondering if it got to him again. There is no bigger fan of Phil than me. I am hoping he gets in to the US open and plays well this year and gets a few wins. He has caught a bunch of heat for trying really hard to maintain speed in his swing and I would love for him to thumbs up these guys and hold a trophy or two. I get the sense from his comments prior to this tournament that he is basically flipping off the USGA and really is hoping he doesn't qualify for the US Open so he won't need to find an excuse to opt out of playing in it this year. I just point back to him skipping it a couple of years ago because one of his kids was graduating high school or something like that.
