Bronzin' for the afternoon at MannKrafted

Recommended Posts

I headed into my friend's CNC shop, this morning with a big ole bar of bronze, a good sized piece of 1018CR steel and a two-putter size piece of aluminum. There is a club pro in New Mexico that ordered a heel-shafted blade, so that was where I started my work. More on that club, in a different post.

I have a very generous friend that owns the CNC shop and allows me to use his manual mill, when he doesn't have a project that needs its time. The work that I really want to show in this post is what became of one of the pieces of bronze that was cut from my bar.

I had a TaylorMade TPA XVIII sitting in a drawer, when I walked into my shop, this morning. The headstyle was classic and has always been one that drew me for some reason. I have been doing most of my hand milled putters based on more of an Anser-style, so when the bronze hit the mill, I knew that I needed to go a different route.

I have some pictures on my phone that need to be transferred and sized, then posted, but I could not wait and had to post the pre-final pictures that I have already. I still need to do some weight shaving and decide on a final shafting configuration, but you'll get to see what my work produced and I am anxious to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for checking this thread and keep an eye out for some in-process pictures.

Yep, after seeing multiple pics of it, I think FMJ Proto is a fitting name, especially now that the bullets are in the sole (Full Metal Jacket for those wondering what the FMJ means).

I've always wondered how can people be so skilled using these kind of grinding/milling machines :P

Damn, I can't even draw a straight line on paper :D

Looks awesome by the way!

I made a few milling changes and here are some pictures of the new look. I added a couple of bullets on the sole to bring down some weight. There is now a pocked in the back wall of the face, facing the flange. I milled a step-down at the heel to create a landing pad for the double-bend shaft. Lastly, the face was remilled and in the process, there was a good amount of thickness removed from the topline.

It is a more respectable weight, but the exact number escapes me, as I type this and the head is in my car. I'll unload that little baja and get you guys a number soon.

Thanks,

Some update pictures. The tip of the shaft will have a more finished look at the final assembly, but this set-up was enough to show me that I hit face-balanced, even if it was mostly by accident, LOL.

Thanks for the comments and views on this rascal. I may have to game it, just to say I have.

I think that the chosen name will be the "JHP Proto", after the bullets on the sole and the fact that between my older brother and I, we rained enough .22 caliber Jacket Hollow Points on gophers as young men to supply a small army, HAHAHA.

Thanks again,
