driver length

... I have also talked to several VP's of Club Head Design and Engineering and they all agree the driver shaft is too long for Am's and even most Pro's. Off the record they blame the sales department so I can't name names but it is the Big Boys not boutique brands.

Yup.  Tom states that as well.  He gets why they did it and doesn't fault them for it from a marketing/sales growth perspective but rather that they had and can see the adverse effect on performance... so they had to make a decision which was more important.

... Looking forward to hearing how this works out for you!

... Refresher: every 1/4" you miss the center of your driver can result in a loss of 5-7 yds. Measure 1" full inch from the center and you can see many miss by this much regularly, resulting in a 20-28 yd loss of distance. This is more the norm and these are the players that occasionally hit a huge drive and wonder how they did it. Easy enough, they hit the center of the face for a change. For most that play this game, the extra distance potentially gained by a 1-1.5" longer shaft is much less than the loss of distance by missing the center. As always, there are exceptions to this rule and some are good at hitting the center with a longer shaft, but they are in the minority and most will actually gain distance and improve direction with a shorter shaft.

Solid information right here. Great post.

That Fujui 2.0 is a very good shaft. It is what i was fit into by Ian for my G410.

Glad to see we converted you!

your post here made me want to take a look at where I stand with the Cobra vs the M5 I was using prior:

Capture.JPG.96628862c19de16b149d21b7635fce4c.JPG

Not quite as many drives yet with the Cobra, but there's def a trend.  I'll take 14% more FIR every day.  On top of that I'm 6 yards tighter on average, and go left way less often.

Interestingly, my longest drive came with the Cobra, and it was in less favorable conditions than some of the other long balls.  The smart range is slightly less with the Cobra, but the longest is with the Cobra... so that's a wash in my book.  The Cobra is just overall a tighter dispersion, left to right and near to far.  All things that make me happy!

The smart distance is odd in that your average dispersion is centered just past 250 with the Cobra and short of 250 with the M5... I guess they are calculated differently, but you could make the case the Cobra is edging the M5. Regardless, those number with the TL make me want to push ahead with my experiment to turn my standard F9 into a TL. Hit the SZ TL in store and the averages matched my F9, would like to get my hands on the SZ Extreme TL.

The Smart distance is supposed to be the average "good" shot I think, so since I had a bigger spread with the M5, but had a few more longer hits it counts those more heavily than a true average of all shots which is what it seems the circle is indicating.  I love the that Cobra is hitting to a narrower band, which to me is a sign of the ball speed retention on mishits.

I always liked that shaft, the std and tour spec models feels so nice to swing.

Good luck with the experiment. I hope it works out!

Yes, this too. But trust me when I tell you I’ve “tested” every last inch of that infinity face in the course. Maybe more than I’d like to admit!

Had a cold round with the new short shaft. First two drives with it were stellar. The next four were meh ( one slice, one toe hook, one I tees up too high and barely cleared water, and one power fade that got wet). I do love the shorter feeling. Need to get the heavier weight on. Did not see a distance increase but it was also below 40* out. I think getting more work in with it will give me lots of consistency. Wish I would have used it on the first tee instead of miss hitting my DI into the water.

I went .75 short from titleist standard and have found more consistency in Striking center. I tried 44 inches and 44.5 before settling on 44.75. For my swing it balances control and speed.

Well my 2 nine hole rounds in I am happy with the shorter length. My distance is not where I want but I think weather and head weight and maybe loft contribute to that. Last nine I hit all but one fairway and my dispersion seemed better. Will trend more and will see how it goes this summer. I may need to cut down my previous shaft if I am still not getting the distance I want.

Interesting development. My weights came in. Swapped the rear slider, which stock is 12g with a 17.5g weight. I take off the old weight, and to my surprise, it was 3g!!!!! I had bought this head from the bay last year with supposed std setup. I was jibbed. I was always wondering why I was having flighting issues.  I am very curious now what the new weight will do. I did also get a 4g weight for the front just to tinker. Will see which setup works best for me.

What is great about this subject is how easy it is to test.  I'm trying this on my 4i and to a lesser extent on my 5i and finding benefit too.  Hitting the clubface center more consistently.... priceless 👍.

For sure. The mechanics/physics are an equal opportunity offering 🙂.  The increased shaft lengths as part of the distance chase is real.  Guys like Wishon saw it early on and advised the playing community at large.

Yea, the "too of of a good thing" adage.  I think the latest advances in fitting technology, LM combined with really competent operator, is where the proverbial "rubber meets the road" in establishing best shaft lengths.  My last fitting has me in my current irons at a +1"  I had previously played +1/2" for 30+ years with my PE2's.  I'm really curious to see if the forthcoming fitting/fitter finds that appropriate.

I also think this whole discussion somewhat supports the "one length" approach...but maybe not?

I was thinking that after I replied. Sounds a lot like the one length philosophy. I too hah my iron length changed, to a 1/4” long instead of 1/2 “ long which was stock for those irons at the time. The fun this with golf we can always experiment. Makes me wonder if having different iron length progression could benefit people. Like after a 7 or 6, go up in maybe 1/4” increments instead and keep the 1/2” going down to the wedges. Another thing to remember, drivers and woods a swing differently (sorta) from your irons so the length progression there can likely vary quite a bit IMO.

I'm still struggling to see what's wrong with getting fit for a driver, including shaft length, first?  Never mind, most of us like to tinker but this one is easy enough to test - put a little mark on your drip an inch lower, grip it there for a month and see how it goes.

I played with a very good player on Saturday.  His clubs were destroyed in a car accident and he's waiting for his new set to come in.  He has the proper driver head but only a three wood shaft at 43.5 in it.  He was not so great with that in our round.  Of course that could have been psychological but he normally plays at 45".

I like my irons 1/2 longer than normal and then I grip them down - its just what I prefer - but I've learned that through time, its a quirk that I have (along with lots of other quirks). 🙂

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

... You have touched on the problem and the solution. The same phenomenon happened in teaching when a student found a "secret" between lessons, maybe a swing article or advice from a friend. A decent ball striker can make adjustments when standing in one spot and hitting the same club multiple times when it doesn't count. Like the student that said their new "secret" was working well after a few swings, I always had them hit the 7 iron they were using to a target. Then have them hit a driver in a different direction, then chip a ball to another target, actually putt a range ball and then back to the 7 iron hit at a different target green and if they missed the green they were not allowed to use their 7 iron for the rest of the lesson. While not exactly mimicking the pressure of playing different shots and having them count, it applied some pressure as well as being out of their comfort zone of hitting the same club with the same swing over and over again until they were making adjustments and over coming their swing flaws.

... For many, the same thing is true in a fitting. When standing in one spot and hitting a driver over and over again, even using different shafts, they know if they hit a bad drive they can just tee up another ball with zero consequence and continue to groove their driver swing. Of course Pro's and better Am's that have a very repeatable swing will benefit the most from a driver fitting and the worse your swing repeatability the less the fitting will help with how you hit that same driver on the course when it counts. Don't get me wrong, it is still very valuable information and will let you know what is optimum with you best swings but when considering something like shaft length, it is much easier to dial in a longer shaft when it doesn't count and you can swing freely and stand in the same spot and groove a swing making adjustments as you hit more balls until you are dialed in. You do not have that option on the course when one swing with your driver can go OB, in a hazard, trees, deep rough and derail your round.

... That is why I love your solution of choking down and playing that driver for month to see how it works under pressure on the golf course. If you consistently hit the bal very well choking down to a line on your grip you can either cut your shaft to that length or increase the line by 1/2" and see if you hit it just as straight and longer or you start to miss the center and on some drives, distance and direction suffers.

Had a TrackMan session today. Will update when I get the data. Turns out I stand too far from the ball and consistently was heely. New winter project to fix my driver swing. When he put me in the correct position I felt like I was putting.

So my dispersion from trackman is decent (this is carry). I need to work on my swing (see my breaking 100 post for video and screenshot) to get more centered contact. My main hit on the face was on the heel. The brown is driver at 9*, spin was way to low. Bumping up to 10* helping spin a lot. I should note that it was 44* out so these are cold range balls.

Interestingly, my SS is right at 100, which to me feels low. When i got this driver last year, i was told i needed XS for my shaft due to my speed. I still will keep this for the stability it brings, just curious if that may be hurting my carry distance.

If you are concerned about distance, transition from a negative angle of attack to positive. You are leaving an easy 20 yards on the table if you can get to +1. This is likely increasing the backspin and reducing roll out as well.

Ya that is on the docket for me as a goal this winter along with increasing SS.

So, about the average for a tour pro which is -1.3º

The average for LPGA is +3.0

Most Ams would benefit from that. You can counter act this by upping the loft on your driver, hence why a lot of pros use a 10.5*

it's something i'll play with this winter, but the ball was launching in a pretty good window.  12-15* with 1900-2300 spin and good carry.  i guess with all the hype around bryson's huge positive attack angle i just assumed that they all hit up slightly on it.
