410 driver - hairline cracks?

Hey guys and gals,

 

As I was getting ready to clean up my driver after a range session when I noticed a few hairline cracks on the crown of this driver. The two that are extending from the face to the turbulators are wide enough to to stick a finger nail into and there are a few smaller ones in between. I talked to Ping and they suggested that I talk to either our pro shop or big box like GG. The latter (GG) is who said that it's deep enough to to insert fingernail into. See pic attached.

 

Is this something you'd be concerned about? I feel awkward having either GG handle this or or local pro since I received this driver via MGS Official Testing.

 

Lastly, I absolutely love this driver and hope it's not a big issue. In fact based on the performance of this driver I ended up buying 2 - 410 hybrids.

Ping (and all other OEMS) makes you go through an authorized retailer. If it's more than a scratch, then they should take care of you

Hard to say whether those are cracks from the photos.  I'm pretty certain PING will take care of it.  Please do keep us posted on how this turns out.

What did the retailer say? I’m positive if it’s a crack PING will replace it.

Hard to tell from photos. Is it possible it’s a scratch? I know my g30 5 wood has some scratches that I an get a fingernail into. But they look different than those.

Oops misread that as you already brought it to the retailer. Let us know what they say. I wouldn’t worry that you were a tester. They’re more or less serving as an intermediary for PING to validate
Authenticity and verify if it’s cracked.

@tony@CIC-any further updates on your driver?  One of the guys I play with here in Yuma is friends with the local golfsmith.  He suggested wetting that area with rubbing alcohol and then watching to see if the lines continue to weep/look wet.  If they do, more likely a crack.

Thanks great tip. I haven't used it since but will be having a lesson with my instructor in 2 weeks so I'll have him look at it as well. He does sell Ping so he's able to send it back if he deems its a problem. Will keep you posted.

I had a PING G30 I bought off ebay. The face cracked, PING told me to take it to Golf Galaxy. I did so and they called me in an hour to tell me PING would replace it, but they didn't have the G30 any more so would I accept the 400? I said "yes please!". Still enjoying it today.

I know this is a few months old now, but not all OEM’s operate that way. TM made me go through a retailer a few years back when I had a head crack at the welds, but Cobra and PXG both handled the same problem for me directly.

Callaway also is great with stuff like this and handles it directly

I creaked my Fusion and as it was out of Warranty Callaway said that all they could offer me a discount on a new Mavrick. BTW I agree that they look like scratches as in all the creaks I have seen are either horizontal where the top crown meets the metal bottom or I have seen some around the edge of the face.

The consensus from both the pro at our club and the guy at GG is that they are not hairline cracks. Haven't noticed any change in sound or performance so I'll just live with it.

I just got a G410.  I will definitely have to keep an eye out for this.  I had a crack in the back on my G30 neck where the head goes into the shaft.  You can clearly see the crack when you took out the shaft.  I returned it to Ping in exchange for a G410.  Great customer service and quick processing.

Yup, been using the Plus for maybe 9-10 months and still happy w it.
