My daughter and I have talked my wife into trying to play golf again.  Other than a couple of trips to TopGolf, she hasn't tried to play in about 25 years.  We'll see how this goes.  Needless to say, I didn't want to invest a ton in this.  So here we go:

• Driver - TaylorMade RBZ HL (High Loft, 15*).  No cost, someone gave this to my older daughter.  She played this for a while, then started pulling my F8 out of my bag.
• 3 Wood - Lady Precept.  $5 from the First Tee $5 bin.  Pulled out of my older daughter's bag - she's away at college.
• 5 Wood - Cobra Speed LD.  $5 from the First Tee $5 bin.  Also pulled out of my older daughter's bag.
• 4H/5H - Adams Idea i Wood.  $21.80 from ShopGoodwill.com.
• 6H - Precept ECU.  $5 fom the First Tee $5 bin.  Also pulled out of my older daughter's bag.
• 7i-SW - Adams A12OS.  $49.80 from ShopGoodwill.com.
• Putter - TaylorMade Spider Rossa (cut down belly putter).  $45.29 from ShopGoodwill.com.
• Bag - Ogio Featherlite Luxe.  $30.18 from ShopGoodwill.com.

$162.07 all in.

Nice!!  Hope all goes well.  My wife and I enjoy our time together on the course.

Based on personal experience, let someone else provide any and all tips, suggestions, lessons, etc.

...I echo what @Kenny B said. I saw my wife walk off the course (twice) after my 'words of encouragement and coaching' 

P.S remember to get PINK castle tees as the colour is usually acceptable and the constant tee height saves you from interfering again lol

I've been down this road a couple of times in the past.  My wife tends to get mad at me because I won't give her advice.  I know that I don't know how to teach golf.  

A couple of things to note about this:

• Putting her bag together was lots of fun.
• It wasn't all that expensive.
• She probably doesn't need the three wood, four hybrid or six hybrid right now, and I spent too much on the putter because I wanted to try out a Spider for myself.  So I could have knocked a few bucks off of this.

The cheapest women's box set at Golf Galaxy right now is a set of Top Flites on sale for $219.  Even though the clubs I bought for her are a little older, I'll bet that every one of them is better than what you'd get from a Top Flite box set.  Same with the bag.

Golf certainly can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be for someone starting out.  But you really need someone to be your sherpa when you're getting started.  That's as big of a barrier to entry as money.  Maybe even moreso for some people.

@HardcoreLooper, What a great excuse to play more.. I also enjoy golfing with SWMBO.. Kinda.. LOL.. Here are a few things to remember..

1) Encourage.. remind her she is doing great, and HER game is different the yours so never compare the two..

2) Suggest not coach.. WHEN she asks What is she doing wrong, cause she will, give her the if it was me i might try doing this.. and let her do it her way.. 

3) as she enjoys it more, your golf cost will go through the roof.. you have daughters playing, $$$, now her, More $$$, and then you $$$$... so you are offically broke.. LOL

The oldest is in college and left her clubs home.  If we all play together when she's home for the summer, she can ride with my wife (I doubt Mrs. Looper is going to walk).

Hmmm daughters in college and then weddings some time in the future. Don't think you have to worry about golf braking the bank - it's already broken.

Oh, the bank is permanently broken.  Oldest just joined a sorority and was accepted into a study-abroad program for the summer.  And junior golf for the youngest starts in a month.  I'll work 'till I'm dead.

And why should you be different . Said by the father of a daughter who absolutely had to do her Junior year abroad in Australia and three years later married an Aussie she met there $$$$$$$$$$$$.
