2020 Birdie Every Hole Challenge

My “home” course is such trash right now. There’ll be no birdies on every hole this year. I’ve played 10/11 of my recent rounds at other courses in the area. I’m not going to keep paying for crap just because it’s closer.

I had totally forgotten I could sign up as par every hole, being a terrible golfer. I have updated the spreadsheet, but clearly have a lot of work to do....

I think every skill level golfer will see the same anticipation, frustration, satisfaction no matter whether they try to birdie, par or bogey every hole.  While the goal is important; it's also the road to get there.

For me right now, the pressure has built up when I get to a hole that I need.  I can only imagine what it will be like near the end of 2020, and I need that last hole.  I may have to take a bucket of balls to that hole!!

When I get to one of the holes I need, I seem to mis-hit the ball tee to green... OR when I do get on the green, I hit the worst putt of the day.  Next hole, I'm fine.

ALL MENTAL! I struggle with this as well and I know once I start racking a few birdies up (will probably start in July when I play my best golf) I will start having these mentals in the background saying:

Been struggling with this for the last 2 months or so as well. Missed a TON of shorties to close out holes. I got 2 on Sunday though thanks to playing side games with my playing partners that took my mind off of it.

I have 3 holes left for the birdie portion. The problem is I have no eagles! I'll get the birdies eventually just tough birdie holes. The eagles may or may not happen 1 par 5 is just a tough eagle.

Plenty of time left ZIPR, summer hasn't even started yet!  That's pretty awesome though to only have 3 holes left at this point.  I'm sitting here with just one birdie on the year and it was at the wrong course!

... Good for you dude. I also have 3 birdies left but the days of eagling 3 of the 4 par 5's on this course are pretty much over. Only chance would be to hole a wedge. 538 on a dogleg right that I hit 7-5 iron off the tee because I can't carry the water at around 260. 543 slightly uphill the entire way I might reach with a very strong wind at my back but would take 2 perfect shots. 512 to a green surrounded by water so ... no. Now 18 is a 485 yarder I can reach with the right wind, but the front is guarded by 4 deep bunkers. So LOL, birdie only challenge for me. I am puling for your eagles though!

I'm a little late to the party, but will have a go at my "home" course and try for the birdie challenge. My "home" course that I play the most is a Robert Trent Jones (Oxmoor Valley - Valley) course.  I have only made 2 birdies so far, but have made 14/18 on the par challenge.

I play from the Orange tees. A lot of elevation change and tiers on the green. Need to start finding the right tier to have a shot at more birdies..

I feel your pain Kenny.  My putting is the worst it ever has been lately.  Spent an hour and a half just banging 3-10ft putts yesterday before going out and playing.  I scored on 1, 5, 9 yesterday but already had them checked off.  Headed back in the right direction now.

I'm going to get started on the birdie challenge from when we in Victoria, Australia were permitted to play golf again. Best result so far in bold.

My home course is Werribee Park Golf Club:

Hole 1 (Index 15) - Dogleg right Par 4 with OB right. Put your tee shot between the fairway bunkers (I take a hybrid, driver is too long), then a wedge in. Par

Hole 2 (Index 11) - Straight Par 4 with OB right and fairway bunkers left. I can fly the bunkers and leave a wedge in. Birdie 30/6

Hole 3 (Index 17) - Par 3 with a large green and bunkers around. Normally a mid to long iron off the tee. Birdie 18/7

Hole 4 (Index 10) - Par 5 with OB right the entire hole, and a severe downslope about 270m from the tee. With a good drive can reach in 2. Birdie 18/7

Hole 5 (Index 1) - Par 4 with slight dogleg. Tee shot is back up the slope parallel to 4th. A great tee shot leaves a mid iron approach to a large, sloping green. Birdie 2/11

Hole 6 (Index 4) - Par 4 hitting back down the slope again. Trees and rough on the left side (dead in there). Large bunker protects the front left of the green. Par

Hole 7 (Index 6) - Par 4 dogleg left. A fairway bunker dominates the tee shot. If you play your tee shot past the bunker, it's a short iron into a narrow green. Birdie 31/10

Hole 8 (Index 14) - Par 3 surrounded with bunkers with a gap front left. Normally a long iron in. - Birdie 23/5

Hole 9 (Index 8 ) - Straight Par 5. Difficult to reach in 2 as fairway narrows close to green and there are bunkers guarding the front of the green. - Birdie 23/5

Hole 10 (Index 3) - Straight Par 4. Often plays into the wind and is quite long. Long, straight drive sets a mid iron into the green. - Birdie 30/5

Hole 11 (Index 12) - Straight Par 5. Trees either side of the fairway so a straight tee shot sets up attacking in 2. Severe right to left slope on green. Birdie 23/6

Hole 12 (Index 9) - Dogleg right Par 4. Straight tee shot can setup a mid-short iron in. If you play too safe from the tee the approach is longer. Birdie 23/6

Hole 13 (Index 13) - Slight dogleg left Par 4. Cannot hit tee shot left but there is room to the right. Normally firm green is elevated and protected with bunkers. Birdie 14/6

Hole 14 (Index 5) - Dogleg right Par 4. A straight tee shot sets up a mid iron into the green. OB on the right but playing too far left leaves a long shot into the green. Birdie 30/6

Hole 15 (Index 18) - Par 3. Short iron into a well-bunkered and subtly sloped green. There are some difficult putts on this green leading to disappointing 4s. Par

Hole 16 (Index 2) - Par 5 with slight dogleg right. Drive down the middle or even slightly right of fairway. Difficult to reach in 2 so second needs to setup approach. Par

Hole 17 (Index 7) - Par 3 that plays uphill. A long iron/hybrid depending on the wind and pin position. Beyond the flag is bad as a severely downhill putt will result. Birdie 14/11

Hole 18 (Index 16) - Short Par 4. OB down the right with rough covering an almost cliff. Fairway bunkers left. Green slopes to the right so approaches can be tricky. Birdie 30/6

My buddy and I started this as a competition. He's much better than I am 5 cap v. 20 cap. So we set it up like this; only count on rounds we play together, I have to par all 18 before he birdies the easiest 15. The setup is leaned towards me for sure, but its still a fun side match we keep and allows us to play different formats with other golfers at the same time.

4 rounds in, I have 7 holes remaining he has 10.

I get to cross 2 holes off the list today for the birdie challenge while I have 2 holes left for the par challenge.

#2 - Played 180 into the breeze. Hit a 6 iron just off the left fringe in the first cut. Chipped in from about 40 feet. Two hop and a roll into the heart of the cup with left to right break. It was a beauty.

#15 - Piped a drive and hit a 56 degree to the green. Stuck it about 15 feet pin high and sank the left to right putt.

Another one crossed off, regulation birdie on par 5 12th. Good drive, good 3 wood, 70 yard pitch to 10 foot. Uphill putt with a little right to left. Very pleased to finally be playing this hole well, it should be straight forward but I've been struggling on it lately.

Another one down. So 4 birdied from 3 rounds. Hit it to the very safe side of the fairway, easy 9 iron to about 3 metres then holed the putt.

One more hole down.  Today I birdied #12, a par 3 playing 150y into a 20 mph wind from the left.  I aced this hole a few years ago; thought I did it again.  Ball ended up 5 feet behind the hole; looked a lot closer from the tee box.

I missed birdie putts on two of the other 5 holes I have left.

Had my best look at par (birdie for handicap) on the toughest hole on the course yesterday.  Nice little 4-5 footer, with a left to right break.  Lipped all the way around the cup and out almost like Xander Schauffele's putt on 17.  Another day of wait to finish off the front 9.

Tough luck for both Xander and Morikawa yesterday.  The pressure mounts when you have a great chance to make a needed birdie.

My home course: Sunnybrook Country Club in Grandville, Michigan.

Sunnybrook CC is a well maintained course with a very walk-able Front 9 and a Back 9 with 3 holes that are steeply up or downhill. The greens are in great shape and can be deceiving without the correct read or knowledge of the course. The maintenance crew keeps the rough very long, which makes missing the fairway feel like a penalty many times.

  • Hole 1 | Par 5 | 452: Reachable in two with a great drive, but there is a pond that covers the last 30-40yds just in front of the green, so flying your 2nd shot is difficult
  • Hole 2 | Par 4 | 389: This course has a lot of long Par 4's. Creek and trees on the left, big trees on the right. Plays straight, but feels scary. My least favorite hole on the course
  • Hole 3 | Par 3 | 155: Three of the four Par 3's are almost identical. Play at 150-165yds and have some bunkers, but no real danger.
  • Hole 4 | Par 5 | 527: Drive 230 to a corner protected by a huge tree. 90° left dogleg with 250+ from there. Not getting home in two.
  • Hole 5 | Par 4 | 320: Shortest Par 4 on the course. Green is protected by trees on the right with a pond. Straight forward, though. I hit 3 wood off the tee.
  • Hole 6 | Par 3 | 149: See Hole 3 and rearrange the bunkers.
  • Hole 7 | Par 4 | 353: Short, but has another 90° dog leg left and the corner is protected by woods and a giant willow tree. Another 3 wood off this tee. Can be a very tricky green.
  • Hole 8 | Par 4 | 422: The beginning of the "Long Par 4" stretch. Plays like a Par 5 for me, but reachable with a good 3 wood second shot. Straight as can be.
  • Hole 9 | Par 4 | 382: Another straight Par 4, but a creek runs 40yds in front of the green that is very dangerous for me.
  • Hole 10 | Par 4 | 419: Yet another straight, long Par 4.
  • Hole 11 | Par 4 | 374: Feels almost identical to Hole 10 to me.
  • Hole 12 | Par 4 | 328: The first of the three "Hill Holes." Tee shot over a large "ravine" to an uphill fairway landing spot. Plays short, but tee shot placement is absolutely crucial.
  • Hole 13 | Par 3 | 157: See Hole 3 and 6, but add a very sloped, speedy green towards a pond on the right.
  • Hole 14 | Par 4 | 411: Blind tee shot uphill. Woods scare you on both sides and looks daunting. Second shot is straight down hill into a steep green with bunkers and a pond.
  • Hole 15 | Par 5 | 488: Straight Par 5. Still cannot get home in two, but 3 decent shots put you in great position.
  • Hole 16 | Par 4 | 391: There is a corner you can cut the slight dogleg left, but you do not want to hit through the fairway. Green protected by bunkers on approach.
  • Hole 17 | Par 3 | 212: Longest Par 3 by par and always feels into the wind. I rarely hit this green and usually end up right and blocked by a tree and bunker.
  • Hole 18 | Par 5 | 561: Again, not getting home in two. Speed slot to the right allows you to cut a corner of trees, but again, three decent shots can put you in great position.

The holes that I am most likely to birdie are: 1, 3, 5, 6, 13, 16 and 18.

The hardest holes for me are 2, 4, 8, 12, 14 and 17.

Let's see if I can birdie them all!

I am absolutely ALL over this!  There are definitely some holes that are going to hold me back on this.  But with all the golf I'm playing this year, I hope to be able to accomplish the Birdie/Eagle challenge!  I'm estimating that the last one for me will be the 3rd hole, a 200+ yard par 3 that has water protecting the left side of the green.  I hate that hole.

My home course is Highlands of Donegal in Mount Joy, PA.  It is a links-style course on what used to be rolling farmland.  It's open, but the fairways are narrow, the windy is using blowing, and holes 7-9, called "Charlie's Corner," can take a decent front 9 and squash it real quick.

l4.jpg.7b23e8d0f1ef8d50598d02a20f6fa9ce.jpg

#1 - Slight left dogleg par 4, but usually plays into the prevailing wind, making it longer than the scorecard says.

#2 - Short but uphill par 4, once again usually into the wind.  Elevated green protected by several bunkers.

#3 - Hellish par 3, 200+ yards from the Blue and Black tees.  Front left of the green is protected by a pond, leading often to a bailout to the right.

#4 - 90 degree dogleg right.  A solid driver or 3 wood can cut the corner and leave only 100 yards in, but be wary; it's OB right, so any miss in that direction means it's 3 off the tee.

#5 - Long par 5 with a narrow landing area.  OB in the cornfield left, and water that protects the front-left and left of the green.  Not much margin for error if you go for it in 2.

#6 - Another long par 3, playing 185+ yards and a big green.  Can lead to 40-50 foot putts very easily depending on pin position.

#7 - The start of Charlie's Corner.  Relatively short par 5, but often requires 3 shots due to the shape of the hole and the blind descent down to the small green.  OB right and hazard all down along the left in the woods.

#8 - VERY short par 3, but still not easy.  Only plays 90 or so yards, but it drops about 40 feet.  Anything long goes into Little Chiques Creek behind the green, and the front bunkers are no fun.

#9 - What an awful hole to end the front 9 on.  Only plays 275, but requires a mid-iron off the tee for positioning purposes.  Fairway slopes left towards the water hazard, and there's a large tree that protects the right side of the green.  Have to be left to have a decent approach shot angle to the green.

#10 - Straight away par 4, fairway bunker on the right is reachable with a good drive.

#11 - What to hit off the tee?  Driver or 3 wood puts the waste area in the left and right into play, and even a pulled 3 iron can get you in trouble.  Play it out to the right to be safe, even if it means a missed fairway.

#12 - Straight forward, slightly uphill par 3, but a big green to deal with, as well as bunkers on both sides.

#13 - Flat and then dramatically uphill par 5.  The landing area for driver has a fairway that is only 5-10 yards wide, with a fairway bunker on each side.  Five bunkers and a false front protect the highly elevated green, so any shot that comes in low going for it in 2 is asking for trouble.

#14 - Short, downhill par 4.  Open on both sides, but several areas of native, tall grass vegetation are ready and waiting to snag an off-line tee ball.  Positioning is more important on this short hole.

#15 - Another 90 degree dogleg, this time on a par 5.  Uphill from the tee to the fairway, the corner is protecting by a line of trees, a fairway bunker, and OB stakes to the right.  A solid drive gets you up close to the top of the hill, but then it's still 200+ yards home, even with the best of drives, and the shot will likely be blind.  Aim at the 2nd power tower, and you're in decent shape.

#16 - Short par 3, plays a bit downhill.  The green protected in front by a bunker willing to catch a shot that gets caught in the wind, which is often swirling on this hole.

#17 - The penultimate hole is nothing to be trifled with.  A slight dogleg left, this lengthy par 4 usually plays into the wind, making it often driver-long iron to reach in 2.  Good preparation for the following hole.

#18 - Long par 4 to end the experience, anyone?  450+ yards from the Blues/Blacks, with the drive going uphill.  Once again, will require a long iron for the second shot to a narrow green protected by a pond on the right.  If this hole is into the wind, it plays more like a par 5.

Really stalled out here. Haven't had any birdies the last few rounds, and last night was particularly frustrating. Had a league match, and hit 5/9 greens in regulation, which is extraordinarily high for me. Managed to take 11 putts on those 5 holes. The one 3-putt was very bad: got scared of the first putt and left it well short. But the other four holes were all OK putts that just weren't good enough.

Tough to have that many birdie looks in nine holes and get nothing from it.

This is my third year at my club.  Going into this year I had birdied 1-6 and 10-15.  This year I have birdies on 7, 9, 16, 17 and 18 but can't buy a birdie on the holes I had already birdied in previous years.  Who's idea was this?

Talk about pressure!  I'm in the same boat.  I know when I step on the tee box that this is a hole I need to birdie.  Then it's not happening.  I got a birdie on #12, a hole I aced 3 years ago, a week ago because I was distracted and wasn't thinking.

I have a goal this year of making a birdie at hole 9 on my home course. It plays about 145 to 150 from the blue tees. I always fear hitting it in the water, so I take out an 8 iron and proceed to hit it over the green. I need to be not afraid to hit a 9 iron here.

Missed a 10ft birdie putt on 15 yesterday during league...brutal! Still a tap in for par (birdie with a stroke) to win the hole!
