DMDoran
Just for fun I started tracking it to see if I could complete the challenge a second time this summer. Only five more holes to go to complete a second loop of birdies. Three of the five left are par 3s and I have already picked off the three holes that took the longest the first time through, so I’m hopeful. For perspective on my game right now, I started recording stats via the GHIN app a bit ago. Over 21 rounds, 6% of my holes are birdies, so I’m cranking them out at a pretty high rate (for me). The down side, 8% of my holes are double bogeys. Without those birdies I’d be toast! As Jon Sherman would say, I need to make war on double bogeys! TCUfrog
Finally Birdied the 2nd Handicap on my course yesterday (albeit in a very unconventional way). The 9th hole is a 435 yard Par 4 which plays flat from Tee to fairway then about 15 yards uphill to the green. I hit a pop fly drive 215 yards.... left myself with 205 yards (pin was front left). Took out my 4 Hybrid to be able to get that higher ball flight to get to the raised green. Hit the hybrid to 5 feet and drained the birdie putt. gavinski91
Ticked 5 holes off the list today, including the first hole which I always struggle with, and two difficult par threes on the front 9. Missed GIR on all three of those, but my chipping was feeling really good today - was within an inch of chipping in on 3 separate occasions. My hybrid felt really good off the tee today as well so I was going with that over my driver most holes, which seemed to help as well. Mtbryant01
Got to knock 2 holes of my list. I'm a 1/3 of the way there now! Slowly but surely. Hole 11 is a short par 4 that plays driver 60/56 degree into green. I finally hit my driver well off this hole. Rolled into the rough on the left side of the fairway. I hit a 56 degree wedge to about 12 feet and made the right to left breaker. Hole 12 is a par 5. Deceptive tee shot over water, but if hit fine, it'll easily carry. Then you have water down the right until you reach the green. Smashed driver, 4 iron to the fringe on the left side of the green. Used my 60 degree to chip about halfway onto the green and let it roll down to the hole. Almost holed out for eagle, tap in for birdie! chisag
... Down to the 2 most difficult holes. #16 is uphill and into the prevailing wind. I usually have 190-175 to the green although on very windy days it can be longer. Today I hit the cart path and it bounced into some light rough leaving me 157 to a front pin tucked over the massive bunker that guards the front. I flew it right over the pin leaving me a 15 footer that breaks right to left. Really the only legit birdie chance I have had this summer and just caught the edge of the hole not breaking as much as I thought. I am not giving up but this was such a great opportunity to X the 16th box. ... I am also really liking this ball! GaDawg 1 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... DMDoran
On my way through this a second time and have been stalled for a couple of weeks. Finally got #4 this morning, so I have three holes left—all par 3s so that may say something about my game. I’ve been playing the back tees a lot too, so that has made these par 3s (7, 13, 15) more challenging. #13 is 222 to the center of the green if they play the normal back tees. Hard to get birdie putts from there! Edited August 14, 2020 by DMDoran
WaffleHouseTour
Got to circle hole 5 today. Been a frustrating one for me as it’s a short hole - should be easy - but for some reason I’ve struggled here all year. But today’s 5 iron (again, a poor tee shot) ended up 8feet away and the birdie curled in. This followed a birdie on hole 4 so I was pretty pumped. I will say that taking on this challenge has really instilled some confidence in my game. Not sure what it is, maybe my game is just improving as my handicap is lower than it’s been in years. But I think this has helped w my mental game. I keep a scorecard just for this in my pushcart - so I see all the birdies I’ve made this year - tells me anything is possible. Kevin Kikkert
Wow, it has certainly been WAY too long since I have been able to update the spreadsheet with a birdie "X." The last two weeks, I have not been golfing my best, but seem to be in a "Par or Double Bogey" area, which is not a good feeling. There is no in between. Last week we signed my wife up for a GHIN account at our country club so she can start tracking her handicap and join the women's league next season. Little did I know, this was going to lead to her "dragging" me out for 72 holes this weekend! We golfed 18 at two of our other county club properties and and 36 at our home course. We were playing the home course yesterday, and the Par 3 third hole was finally playing back to 156 (had been 170's all week, and I kept hitting front fringe) and I stuck one to 20ft right of the pin. There is a high ridge that runs through the center (back to front) if this green, so I had to putt up to that ridge with left break, and then plan for down the ridge to the pin while breaking back to the right. Rolled the putt right into the center of the cup and marked a circle. What was even more fun, was right after I made my birdie putt, my wife (who had chipped onto the back of the green) sunk her par putt. edingc
Was so close to checking No. 11 off the list on Sunday. It's not listed anywhere near the hardest handicapped hole on the course, but it plays 405 yards with a dogleg right, and over the years the trees have grown up such that you really can't cut the corner. I don't know when the holes were last handicapped, but I'm guessing when the course was built in the 1960s that long hitters simply flew the ball over the dogleg. I got away with a very high, faded 2 hybrid that sat down about 150 from the green but with tree trouble above. I pulled the SpeedZone 7 iron and hit a great low runner that hit a ways in front of the green and rolled to about six feet just past the pin. The greensmower was out and stopped me to say it almost went in when it rolled by! Unfortunately, I hit a really good birdie putt but it turned just right at the end and left me with a three-inch tap in par. I haven't been that close on this hole all season, and it hurt to not convert that opportunity. tchat07
Did not think I had a chance of every completing this because I am not much of a birdie person. However cranked out 2 birdies in one 9 last week. I am up to 7 holes completed so big goal of getting to 9 by the end of the season!
