What Irons Should I try?

Mowine4me

Recommended Posts

I have an iron fitting scheduled for next week.  I know I want to try the Mizuno MMC and HMBs.  I also want to try the T-200s.  Other than that I'm open to suggestions.

I'm a 13 handicap.  Driver swing speed is about 101mph.  Currently using Ping I25s.

I have no problem getting my irons in the air.  Hit a 7 iron 160 based on ShotScope data from last year.

I'm not really looking for workability.  I'm happy to have one ball flight and just play that.

Suggestions?

... I 2nd cnosil's suggestion. Going to Demo Day at the PGA Show every year I always found clubs that performed extremely well for me that I would not have other wise even hit. It has to look acceptable at address of course but the best example I can think of was the original Cobra Amp Forged irons that had a gaudy orange cavity, goofy looking tungsten weights that were annoyingly visible in the heel and toe of the sole and had a polymer insert. ALL attributes I did not care for but they looked just about perfect at address and the performance was as good as it gets for my swing. I would have looked at that orange cavity and those K-Mart style  tungsten sole weights and would have never even taken it off the shelf in a golf store. I ended up playing them and the next 2 versions as well. So hit any and everything you can stand to look at in the address position. Good luck!

I just switched to the Hogan Ptx Pro’s and am totally head over heels. They’re a point and shoot, super accurate stick. I don’t know if any of the “fitters” have them for you to try but for me, they feel great, and that’s coming from a mizuno blade guy.

but I’m in the hunni moon phase right now, so understand that too...

I suspect you'll really like the JPX series. They were my, very close, second choice. Interested to hear how you like the MMC and HMB's; I have not tried these but want to.

I'm still swinging JPX 800 Pros from 2011.  Can't go anywhere for a fitting, but decided to pull the trigger on some PXG 0211's.  They gave me a complimentary fitting for whenever their fitting locations open up.  I can provide feedback once I hit them this weekend.  Ranges are closed but courses are open where I love.  So, I'll hope to get used to them via trial by fire.

Even though I play Srixons 565s, 4-PW, with KBS shafts, which are nice, I would love to have a set of Mizuno JPX-919s, there are Tour, Forged or Hot Metal models.

Cool as the other side of the pillow.  (Damn, I sound old)

You won`t find a lot of differences in between your 585s and the Forged or Hot Metals. Hot Metals are a good bit more chunky, but Forged is relatively similar. I prefer the Srixons because of their sole design. I'm not super steep, but take a healthy divot once in a while. The Srixon sole works a lot better, when doing that compared to the Mizzys. If you are a picker of the ball, this might not affect you at all. Just something to keep in mind.

Cheers,

Michael

Edit: The Tours are a totally different design. More similar to Z-Forged - even 785s are way easier to hit for me personally.

Said it incorrectly, Pings are backups that still see play but JPX919 are the go to.

Quickly put me in a shaft that was firmer in the middle, and that helped a lot right off the bat.

Congrats!

What shaft was in your old sticks and what did he fit you in?

I'm also curious, I just got fitted and picked up a set of Forged 919's...did he select the shaft for you on his own or did he rely on the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer or some other gizmo?  My fitter said he stopped using the optimizer a while ago...

New shaft is KBS S-Taper 120.  Fitter selected it on how own, no optimizer used.  I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember the old shaft and those clubs are stuck in my NYC office the moment.  Not sure when I'll be able to look!

Funny how this turned out.  After reading the first post, I thought about suggesting Cobra as an option, they have a lot of ground covered.  Keep reading, and there they are.  LOL

Though I've never played them, I'm a believer in Srixon stuff, also.  For this thread, it's academic, but doesn't hurt to leave it out there...

Go to as many performance centres as there are available and hit all there top clubs. I tried Callaway, Ping, Mizuno, and Cobra. I ended up buying Callaway but not the recommended club (Big Berth Irons) as I found the Steelhead Pro felt better and it was easier to work the ball. It is always going to be a personal choice.

I loved the Ping and way with Mizuno you could mix the various irons but given my special requirements, Callaway was the best choice plus they had a special that included a Hybrid for free.

Callaway Apex 21 Hybrid 19 Degree

Has anyone tried the Sub70 699 irons? Their price tag is very appealing. I tried the demo clubs and they gave me extra yardage without sacrificing accuracy. But wanted to hear from you guys rather than just what their website reviews were saying.
