The Back Up Bag Project

Recommended Posts

I've hinted at it before and finally now I'll take the time to start this up.

As many of us if not all of us I have an excess of clubs, some I likely won't ever use, some I just can't bring myself to sell for nastalgic reasons and others I found a great deal and price and will look to flip later.

I'm very fortunate to do a good bit of travelling so rather then bringing the main sticks and risk damage on airlines and travel I'm going forth and officially building a go with me back up bag.

So far I have putter, wedges and irons all sorted. The rest will come together over the next few months

Putter - Ping Sigma Tyne.... Was my favorite putter ever and still love it to bits, but the stroke lab simply is better. Thankfully it gets a second life here.

Wedges - Cobra Trusty Rusty Black Tour 52,56,60. Not my typical set up but with the irons this should make a good fit. I've always loved these wedges and rather then sitting and collecting dust they will now really get a chance to be nice and rusty!

Irons - Cobra Fly Z Pro. I had the amp cell pros before moving to a more suitable club. Almost immediately after selling them I missed them dearly. I had been in a lookout for a new set for a bargain and finally found a set in pretty good shape for all of $150 cad... Missing a pitching wedge and 4 iron but still can't wait to get back on a course with them.

This is interest @Apolloshowl and I'm psyched for you that the Stroke Lab made the bag! For me, I just have my clubs from when I played in high school and those would be my "back-up" if I ever needed them.

My problem is frankly that I am a club ho. I have told others before I have so much stuff that I keep 6 playable sets assembled bag balls gloves tees and all. Just grab and go. But basically besides my signature set I keep assembled in my car for a walking and practice set the following which is a strictly vintage set up. I can practice vintage and still play my front line set which is 99% vintage anyhow.

Driver-- 1957 Macgregor Velocitized persimmon

4 wood 1957 Macgregor Velocitized persimmon

Irons 2 thru PW 1962 Macgregor FC-4000

SW-- 1963 Macgregor Toney Penna FC

Putter--- Green shaft Macgregor IM-5 ( reproduction)

Bag nylon old school Vagabond with Nike padded strap.

I can substitute any number of fairway woods and drivers both persimmon and metal and irons any number of vintage Macgregors---- But I can go somewhat modern on the irons if I substitute my MP-68s or 2013 Cally forged X.

Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha  Speeder 565 R flex- 5W TM V-Steel Fubuki 60r--- 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R----- 9 W TM V Steel TM MAS stiff---- Irons 2015 TM TP CB Steel Fiber 95 R--- GW Callaway Mack Daddy 2 52* shaft unknown junk pile refugee. SW Callaway PM Grind 56*  Modified sole grind--- KBS Tour Wedge-- LW Vokey 58* SM5 L grind--- Putter Ping B90I Broom Stick

My back up back lives at my in-laws holiday apartment.

I'll be taking a few recently replaced clubs next time I go to fill out the bag.

Driver - Nickent 4DX with Grafalloy Epic

3 and 5 Woods - TM Burner 08 with Grafalloy Epic

4 Hybrid - TM Rescue 09 with Grafalloy Epic

5-E (couldn't resist) Ben Hogan Apex Edge Pro with Hogan Apex 4

50,54,58 Wedges - Cleveland CG15 Black Pearl Wedges

Putter - Ram Zebra

Sun Mountain Sync Bag

The top end of the bag will be "new" for my back up bag, and are all clubs that I know I can use, unlike most of the clubs that they are replacing.

OK @fozcycle, What do you have that's better then Challenge winner F8's? I got to know, cause my F8's Beat out a 3 yr old set of Ping G25's and Wilson D300's that were 1 yr old.. I have to know..

I picked up a set of Wilson Staff D7 irons(5 - PW). They are 3* stronger lofts so I am longer. Paired them with my Hogan Tk15 49*/53*/57* Wedges, Scotty Cameron Kombi putter, Tour Edge CBX119 22* Hybrid & PowerBilt 3W & 5W. As I just acquired PMookie’s old Shot Scope V2, I could not put them in my F8 Cobra Fairway woods without changing grips, so I chose the PowerBilts which are 12 years old.

So far, I like the D7’s, but the Cobra’s are in my closet, making them my “backup bag”.

@fozcycle, do you feel you gained something over the cobra's other than length? with the Wilson's being 3* stronger, You could tweak the cobra's. or do you just feel more comfortable with the wilsons? I also have a set of Wilson D300's and I feel the Cobra's are  much better clubs for me.. But I have kept the Wilson's as a back up set..

  • 1 year later...

It's been over a year since I posted in this, but I did actually play several rounds with this setup last season before moving to Europe and left this set in Canada with my folks.
The driver that was left behind was my old Cobra FlyZ+ blue. A oldy but a goody.
I also added a 5 wood (Callaway Rogue)
7 wood (Cobra F7)
Hybrid Taylormade Burner.
So some older clubs, but eventually when I go back I'll be happy to use them again.

The biggest thing of note for this set of clubs was I lost no confidence in using the irons. Distances were a little behind, but they look so darn good and feel even better. I was a little surprised and although I didn't use Arccos or can recall exactly what I shot, I know I enjoyed it and had a good time and made plenty of birdies so they couldn't have been that bad or difficult to hit!

I traded in my F8 irons and hit a Speedzone Extreme driver, then sold it out of my bag to another of the club seniors. I then got a PXG 0211 driver, for less than the Speedzone, using the Veteran discount.

my backup is now the Cobra F8 driver, Bombtech 3W and 4H, followed by Hogan Ptx 4-PW, then Hogan tat wedges, 49, 53 & 57, with EVNROLL E6-R putter.

that’s awesome @Apolloshowl.  not having to lug your clubs around but not losing confidence in what you’re swinging is awesome

i keep a backup bag at my place in florida:

Cobra SpeedZone 3W

Cobra King Utility 17.5*
Titleist 718 AP2 4-PW

Vokey SM6 50/54/58

Thanks man I think I am on the way. There was a big first for me this morning. At church I was able to go the 26 steps up and into the sound booth with no pain. Came down with no pain and trust me my fellow members noticed and commented. I was not on painkillers either have not taken any opiods or the such since last July. Now I have been doing CDB gummies ( legal ones) for the last several months. The pain has went away and my flexability has improved. I do not get high or anyting just more flexable and pain free. After 3 months of Oxy flexarell and Vicidan I wanted off that train and I refused to let them prescribe any more. I also use the topical CDB cream too that the fine folks mix up for me and it helps. The docs have been telling me to get out and do more that I was tight from laying up. the back doc said I was structually healed and could do no more damage other than if I fell on it or was in a violent accident. But both docs say they do not think I need to be driving a truck any more because of the bouncing etc.

Sounds like your well on the way to 100%.  The Motocaddy is working out for you.

The truck bounce, the Docs right about that.

Actually it does not.  It’s a Wilson Sunday bag that is pretty cool.  I need to get it setup though. It’s great for walking a 5 hole loop.

Yeah, I have one too...... I'm a huge Seamus Golf fan and got a Sunday bag from them on sale. I have a problem, including a number of Seamus head covers for the seasons. It's like a disease.
