3 wood Hybrid gapping question

Recommended Posts

Got fitted. Going to get a new 3 wood and hybrid.

Fitted club specs 3 wood 14.5 degrees,carry 240-250, total 260. 3 Hybrid 19 degrees, carry 230-235, total 250.

I wanted to demo the 4 hybrid at 21 degrees and the 5 hybrid at 24 degrees but there weren’t any. Based on these distances how much can I expect my distances to drop off going up to 21 and or the 24 degree hybrid? Do you think 19, 21, or 24 degrees would be better gapping for my longer clubs? My 4 iron loft is also 24 degrees and my carry is 190-200 yards 210 total with that club.

Really kind of impossible to answer as this is too swing and club dependent.

If I were to generalize, just like irons a 3-4* gap would be 10-20 yards carry difference. However, if you don’t swing longer clubs we’ll the gaps will be narrower. If the clubs have adjustable hosels you can tweak the settings to improve gaps.

Unless you call around to various fitters to see if they have a 4 or 5 hybrid to demo, Global Golf U-Try sounds like your best option to try out first.  I do agree with cnosil's 10-20 yard gap generalization particularly if you were to order a 4 hybrid in the same model & shaft combo.

From what ive found and read and tested, in the same category of clubs and within the same family/generation of clubs( because center of gravity dispersement changes from product and company), you will see around a 2-3 yard difference per degree of loft.

Best answer is find a place where you can get fit properly. Often times golf galaxy and similar places have many loft option you can try to get an idea for gappring.

I have a 21* and 25* 818H1 heads. They carry 208 and 196 for me. I tested a 19* head when I got fit for the 21* and it was carrying 3-4 yards further. My 4 iron is 24* and carries 192.

Also think about how many hybrids you want to play. 1 or 2? If only 1, then the 19 is definitely going to far.
