COVID-19

I think this is a good time to do some self reflection.  If Covid 19 wasn't on your radar, why?  Was it you?  Do you not pay attention the news and stay informed?  Do you not pay attention to international news?  What news sources did you watch, read and pay attention to in January, February and early March?   What does it mean from here on out?  Are you going to change so in the future you are better informed?

If you were paying attention to the news, what news sources were you following and what were they saying about it two months ago.  Were they hyping it or down playing it.  Which or your sources were accurate and which were misleading?   Will you trust a source in the future that mislead you on this?

Once bitten and all that.

I readily admit, I was late to the party on this whole mess.

A good friend I work with was in this boat, even with a ER nurse daughter, an ER Dr son-in-law, and an immuno-compromised wife. I know why he was late to the party, but I'm glad he finally "arrived."

I haven't watched news or read newspapers in years.  Every news/media outlet in the United States is owned by powerful political backers with an agenda to sell to its viewers.  I'm not interested!

Say what you will about that choice but I'm not likely to change!

It's too late to prevent people from buying too much unfortunately. If the CDC put out a recommendation or mandate on face masks, I doubt I would be able to comply.

Yeah, there's not really a good way to ration these types of things out.

The way I understand the mask thing is.... it's to stop you from touching your face. Unless it's the N95 mask or equivalent, those paper/cloth masks will not keep you from getting it.

It's interesting to see that the CDC is now considering recommending the general public wear face masks. My opinion is that the prior recommendation that the general public should not wear face masks because it won't prevent transmission of the disease is too black and white. I understand that it won't prevent, but could it reduce the chances of transmission, even by a small percentage? If asymptomatic carriers wear them, will it help reduce the chance of them transmitting it to another person? If it helps by at least by some small percentage, then I think we should use them. However, we would need to be careful to ensure people don't start hoarding face masks and taking them away from healthcare providers. I guess the other potential issue is that people will become overconfident and feel protected by the mask and then not follow social distancing.

This is one of those not-so-common, common sense things IMO. If it's easy to breathe through, it's probably not going to stop you from BREATHING IT IN, but if touching your nose/mouth can get you infected, or cause you to spread it if you're asymptomatic, why not wear one? It just reminds me not to touch my face, and to be cognizant of what I'm touching because I'm turning into a germaphobe.

My job exports 75% of our product overseas, I was able to see what was going on long before it got the recognition it deserved. But my feeble mind still couldn't completely wrap my head around it or its implications.

China was not forthcoming in what was happening and our leaders were slow to react. That combo has been the anchor pulling us down to the bottom. We will come out the other side and hopefully be better prepared in the future.

I'm so cynical and skeptical of everything reported by any/all media outlet(s), I have no idea what to think.  We're basically living a new episode of "24" everyday.  I halfway expect to see Kiefer Sutherland running down my street chasing a Humvee loaded with dirty politicians any day now.

Life is a bit surreal at the moment!  Life imitating art kind of thing.

I'm the same way @sixcat I think all of the MGS readers are by nature, and that's what brought us here. I am starting to look at what people do vs. what they say in all of this. China said a lot of misleading stuff, yes. But they also forced an entire city to stay indoors. We all saw the reports and the footage of entire city streets empty, in a place with a huge, dense population. Everything was right in front of our faces, and we can't blame anyone but our local media and local/federal governments.

I completely agree that China was misleading, and even might still be.  However, I'm not so sure we can blame anyone but our typical American lifestyle.  Here's what I mean by that:  China is a socialist/communist country and their government can control the movement of their citizens...but in America the citizens are prideful and won't submit to any authority in their lives...so the government can warn the people to stay inside until they're blue in the face, but people are still gonna do what they want (a.k.a. NYC).  It's kind of funny to me that there are some many young people in this county that want socialism, but they would be the first ones to tell the socialist government, "you can't tell me what to do."

Exactly what I'm saying...that we all need to heed the warnings and stay in as much as possible...but that's obviously not happening, just look @Shankster posts in this feed about people going out all over the place.  This was my point, that people can be told over and over again what needs to be done, but some people only learn by going through the "fire", or being dumb as you put it in one of your earlier posts...you can't blame the government for that.

My wife was sent home from work, one of her team members tested positive. Her last interaction with the sick employee was 3/20 and fortunately for us, my wife remains asymptomatic. She has not been tested so we’re following county health advice at this time.  We are living with the idea of not if but when.  Good news with my job is that I am away from home 24 hours at a time.

That’s interesting to hear.  Our call volume is down since mid-March and has been consistently down since this has evolved.  Have you guys adjusted your responses for fire apparatus or is it go on everything?

We had a huge change at the beginning of the year at what apparatus went to what calls because our com center began playing BS games.  We currently only get engines on certain calls shootings, stabbings, cardiac arrest, overdoses, respiratory arrest, or if we request them. All the ambulances had the cabs sealed with plastic and duct tape from the mods and we have what feels like a new SOP every few days.  Our fire chief hasn't been much help so are far marshals went around him to the mayor of our city and the marshals have been doing a ton of work as out. It's nice having a bunch of medics in the fire Marshal office who are willing to do what it takes to help us out and make sure we get equipment that we need.

We only had a break in call volume for about a week and a 1/2. Each truck was running maybe 3 to 4 calls per ambulance now we are we're backup to nearly 10 calls per ambulance today which was a 10 hour shift. The night shifts haven't been much better running about one call every hour or so over 14 hours.

Curious to know what specific precautions everyone is using besides the obvious of social distancing and staying at home. Here are mine:

  • Significantly limited grocery store trips, mostly grocery delivery only. Not really any other trips outside of the house
  • Wear a mask if I have to go outside of the house
  • Don't bring any packages inside the house. I clean the outside of the box when possible and the contents as well
  • Wash hands frequently, especially after touching anything from the outside, and always before eating
  • Heat up in the microwave or the oven any food that was prepared outside of the house

My wife was a germaphobe to begin with, so our methods might be a bit extreme

Heck I've been around many who tested positive with work and I am the worst at being careful outside of work. I wash my hands but nothing else I wear a mask at work but I'm not doing it when I'm off.

Unfortunately the n95 is not 100% effective the size the mask filters isn't always the size of the droplets. It is better than nothing but they are finite.

I hear ya bro; we are getting crushed and no PPE.  Browned out a bunch of companies to add extra ambos too.  I've been reassigned several times so far, and now work EMS to help.  Silver lining is I have a job and income when so many do not.  Otherwise its just awful.  Good luck and stay safe.

Good perspective right there. We have no precedent and as such, it’s time to readjust, be flexible and get it done.

Our chief is far from progressive he wants his time in as chief to be the one where nothing changes and he doesn't ruffle any feathers. I'm glad we have the fire marshal we do who would make for a great chief of our department.

Have you checked with customer service at any of the stores you visit? Our Wal-Mart keeps some of their supplies back there to cut down on people hoarding things like alcohol, toilet paper, etc...

I think you missed the point. I wouldn't be able to comply because I can't find masks anywhere. I can't find disposable gloves, hand sanitizer, clorox bleach, or even some stinking vitamin C.

Hydrogen peroxide works great as a hand sanitizer and it works as a replacement for bleach for cleaning surfaces.  As of last week, my local Walgreens had lots of bottles of it. I don't know if it is still available, or if those late to the party are now snapping it up. Check your laundry room to see if you have some.

As for masks.  You will not be able to find a medical mask.  But, the main purpose of the mask is to stop people from touching their faces and to provide a slight barrier to airborne spread.  Alternative masks will do the same thing.  A bandanna is better than nothing.  Quilters across the country are gearing up to make masks. My wife has been receiving emails and tutorials on mask making for a couple of weeks now.  Do you sew?  Do you know someone who does?  If you know someone who quilts, you have a source for masks.

Remember, soap and water are still the best defense.  Put a gallon jug of tap water and a bar of soap in your trunk and wash hands before getting in your vehicle when needed or before going into a store.  It's less convenient than hand sanitizer, but effective.

I heard today that British American Tobbacco, based in Kentucky are hoping to grow a vaccine from tobacco plants and might be doing clinical tests soon. Of all the industries I didnt expect relief to come from, a cigarette company is high up there. Hope its true and they really can come up with a vaccine soon. Best reports elsewhere are Jan 2021 at the very earliest

A coworker was ordered to quarantine for 14-days.  His father-in-law called last night to say he was having trouble breathing and needed to go to the ER.  He was diagnosed with pneumonia and tested for COVID-19.  The results won't be back for several days.  Probably precautionary given his F-I-L has severe COPD and has a bout similar to this a couple of times per year but one can never be too careful at the moment.

Bingo. That's all I was getting at with that post.

Also, that was in response to a post about the possibility of the CDC recommending masks to prevent the spread from asymptomatic carriers which goes beyond someone touching their face. Obviously, anything would be better than nothing, but how effective a bandana or something of that nature (as others have suggested) would be is questionable compared to a proper mouth and nose covering which has been sterilized.

At the end of the day we'll all (hopefully) do the best we can to prevent the spread so we can return to some type of normalcy. I've heard some in the media refer specifically to medical grade masks in regard to that possible CDC recommendation, but that solution is improbable until supply catches up with demand. For the public, that will likely be a very long time as PPE will (and rightfully should) be sent to those who are working on the frontline ASAP.

Anyway, all that to simply say the original post of discussion was simply meant to direct attention to all the hoarders and panic buyers who have made things difficult for those of us with cooler heads - and even worse for those who simply don't have the ability to go out and navigate crowded supermarkets and supply stores.

I’m going to make myself one of those hoops that keeps people away from me.

Masks are sold out everywhere. How do they expect people to wear one if there aren’t any to wear?

I refuse to go to the grocery store now. Canned fruit and vegetables that I can find online will have to work. Pick up orders fill up immediately. Even when you try at midnight, 4, 5, 6am etc.

Maryland just recently went on lockdown correct? I took almost 2 weeks here before stores were close to normal. Unless looking for paper products of course. It will get better but it truly sucks in the meantime.
