Has use of GPS altered your set configuration?

Recommended Posts

GPS has definitely had an effect on my game.  It has made it easier to commit to a club choice and not subconsciously quit or decelerate on a shot.

But another thing that it did was significantly change my set configuration.

It's ironic, given present circumstances, but I bought a new set for this season--my first new one in a very long time.

When I bought every previous set, I wasn't playing with GPS.  Nobody was, actually.

Now that I do, that radically changed the makeup of the set that I assembled.

Have any of you had a similar experience?

It hasn't really changed anything with my set composition (per se), but it has helped me learn my yardages and to identify when something is off. For example, I bought a set of wedges off eBay a few years ago, followed by a set of irons. When I purchased the wedges, I wasn't really thinking about an iron purchase so I matched them to the set I had. When I eventually made the switch however, my PW loft went from 47* or 48* to 46*. It's a small difference, but I started to see a bigger gap between my PW and GW. Last year, I was selected for Bridgestone wedge testing and requested all of my wedges in 2* stronger lofts - problem solved.

Hasn't changed mine and I've been using it for about 3 years. However, and not to hijack the thread, what did make a difference was buying a SC200 for dialing in distances.

I've used a GPS of some type for a long time. The GPS helped me on approach shots mostly. I've also used it on the course practicing and getting a better feel for distances/gaps with my irons. These days I have a solid knowledge of my average distances - so a quick glance of my GPS; a laser shot and I'm good to go. Over the past couple of years I started to pay more attention to the back of green distance. It enabled me to hit more greens. Some days anyway.

I've been using DMDs for some time now, and they have not changed my set makeup.  Arccos, however, has taught me the same thing that you learned - that I have multiple clubs I hit the same distance at the top end of the bag.  So I'm looking for replacements and better gapping.

I’ll say that I didn’t realize how much of a gap I had in my wedges until I started using a DMD. So yes, I’ve had to significantly change my gapping.
