Am I nuts for loving an 8802?

Hey gang,

I'm loving all the offseason work I'm doing with my Wilson Staff Milled 8802 and feel really confident that it will be my gamer once this craziness subsides, but am I nuts? It's old school tech and doesn't take advantage of all the new advancements in putter technology. Anyone still trust in these old models?

Update:

I'm loving the feedback and discussion! I might as well add some pics and background on my 8802. I had it totally standard at 35" and was actually ready to get rid of it. I couldn't generate a consistent stroke and it just didn't have good feel. So I took the grip off and decided to knock an inch off of it. What I found is that Wilson seems to put a long weight plug in the butt of the club. We basically sliced right through it and put the grip back on. The shorter length and the drop in counterweight made all the difference. The stroke got comfortable and the feel came back, it was a very happy accident. I wish I knew why Wilson put such a big counterweight in something with such a small head.

... Awesome! I think tech is a huge benefit for all golfers. How much and what kind of tech for your particular game is always the big question. I started with an 8802 and had a rather substantial gated stroke, which was 100% instinctive and I have never changed. Putting is arguably the strongest part of my game and thru the years I have tried other putters but always come back to a blade heel shafted putter because as Barbajo said, I am sinking more putts with them. If you have a repeatable stroke and hit the center consistently, I think tech is irrelevant on a putter head that is moving so very, very slowly compared to other golf clubs. Obviously the least consistent and the more you miss the center, you should use all the tech you can manage. But confidence is King when it comes to putting and whatever head gives you the most confidence is the one you should use from an 8802 to a Spider. They all work. My 6330 has weights in the heel and toe as well as a face insert for roll technology, so I kinda have the best of all worlds. Here is a few of my putters starting with my Bobby Grace 6330 on the far right followed by Bettinardi BB2, YES Sophia, Tour Edge Ti-Copper 4555, Black Milled 8802 and my original 8802.

The 8802 is a classic putter.  The putting stroke really needs to be repeating and a gate stroke works best.  I love the shape of this putter and wouldn't rule out picking up a really nice Designed by Arnold Palmer one day.  I have a Scotty Cameron American Classic VII and a Cleveland Classic Corey Pavin in my reduced arsenal of putters.  It is fun to bring out the ACVII out from time to time and give it a waggle and stroke.

... Many with what I call a natural putting stroke simply execute it like a mini swing. Called Gated because it is like opening a gate. Starting with a square face, the putter moves back from the ball traveling on an arc inside the line while the face opens. Then starts back toward the ball on that same arc the face returning to square at impact, then arcing inside with the face closing. It is natural and makes no adjustments to keep the putter head on line. Many using a gated stroke have the ball at address a few inches outside their eye line which helps a natural stroke.

Ah I gotcha.  So would I be wrong in associating a gated/natural putting stroke to someone with a strong arc stroke?

No. Slight arc vs strong arc is more about the curve of the path the putter travels. SBST in theory has no arc, slight would be more of an ellipse, and strong more of a circle.
Gate/rotation is more about how much the Putter opens and closes as it travels along that path.

... There are more than a few variables like how close you stand to the ball, how much you bend from the waist and the length of  your putter  that determine how much arc a natural stroke will have for each golfer. As cnosil said everyone has some arc, even SBST putters unless they really manipulate the path with contortions that should only be attempted by member of Cirque du Soleil.

Yup.  Theres really no such thing as a true SBST because you cant swing around a fixed point without making some serious manipulations.  Unless you are going to be all hunched over, like Michelle Wie did when she was tabletop putting; its almost impossible to not have some degree of arc.

I think thats why I prefer heel shafted putters.  I feel like the toe hang allows the face to open and close throughout the stroke.  I guess that means that I have a gated stroke.

I was killing time at the PGA Superstore one day and picked up a 8802, I used to put with one forty years ago.  The new one is nice and I sank about five straight 10 footers with it but didn't buy it since I really wasn't in the market at the time and I have a Arnold Palmer "The Original" from about forty years ago that is the Palmer version of the 8802.  I am going to give the Palmer a try but I may pick up a 8802, especially as inexpensive as they are.

... When I picked up my Bettinardi BB2 in a trade it was selling for $800. I never understood why a milled piece of metal would cost that much.

As you know, cost is determined by what they market will demand.  I can say something is worth $800 but if I can't find anyone to pay that much it obviously isn't worth that much.  There are lots of things in this world that I don't understand the sales price.  An example of something we both like;  the Grace 6330.  To me it isn't worth anywhere near what Bobby Grace charges and while I love mine,  I purchased for significantly less.

... I understand supply and demand, especially for a high end item. I was more referring to putters with intricate slots, cavities, etc compared to a solid milled head like an 8802 that takes minimal work. At least the 6330 has cavities in the sole for the weights and the face has to be milled out for the insert, but yea the price is silly high.

No. Slight arc vs strong arc is more about the curve of the path the putter travels. SBST in theory has no arc, slight would be more of an ellipse, and strong more of a circle.
Gate/rotation is more about how much the Putter opens and closes as it travels along that path.

Thanks guys!
