2020 Official Member Review: PING G710 Irons

Recommended Posts

No i wont change the time or conditions i play in for something i dont need. There is always the possibility of playing early in the morning when there is dew on the grass or you get caught in the rain. But if i am caught in the rain i prefer to halt play. I am not quite good enough to notice nor do i take golf THAT serious to worry about losing spin in damp conditions. I might account that feature back to Ping's marketing team. Its hard to sell new clubs without having a few new "features". My $0.02

So, another question. Is anyone going to change their time to go play or the conditions you play in because of these irons? The reason I ask is because of Hydropearl Stealth to see if it does work. I'm very intrigued by this based on the wedge test on how those with some features to filter water away

That’s the big selling point to is the “water wicking” aspect I guess for lack of a better term so I’ll definitely be doing early dew rounds and warmer as well. This finish will be interesting

Next question, with those of you with devoted wedge setups, will you be dipping in past the pitching wedge? Will you need to modify your setups due to the lofting issues?

For me, I'd consider going all the way down to the SW, then adding a speciality wedge if I found it helpful as I normally have used SW in the past more as a full swing club if it performs the way I want to see it perform.

Yea thats a legit concern to review. Looking at the line-up on G710 clubs, I would need to include the UW into the bag. My typical wedge setup (besides PW) are 52/56/60. The UW is 49 deg and the PW is 44. I prefer my Titleist Vokey wedges and know the feel of them better.

Unless they tell us they want us to try ALL the clubs 4-SW then throw it in an we'll see. Maybe and extra forgiving SW is needed and i didnt realize it.

@Berg Ryman depends on requirements like

@JonMUSC08 said. I don’t necessarily need 4-UW would only need up to PW but would test all clubs if needed

That's why I asked Rick, I'm probably grabbing the gap wedge, or U Wedge, as I see it as an iron extension. I'm going to ask questions about the SW at the fitting, maybe hit it against a traditional SW to see the difference

Yes I think this would be a great comparison to do comparing wedges (myself hitting CBX2's vs the standard SW in this set)

Based on my experience from the D7 irons, I recommend giving at least the gap wedge a serious test during your review.  It was a shocker for me.

Friendly update to all y'all following along. Our faithful mod @Golfspy_CG2 is talking to Ping about their reopening strategy and whether or not we may go to the online Master Fitter program mentioned earlier in the thread.  We thanks you for your continued intrigue and patience

I'm happy you posted that @revkev because last night I has an breakthrough about the top end of the bag as it relates to this fitting. If you remember I've always had trouble around that 20-21 degree part of the bag as mentioned in the earlier post about my iron history. Admittedly, as we've been waiting I've been window shopping 7 woods and 3 hybrids to fit that gap, but I'm taking the 4 iron from this set, baring absolute cataclysmic efforts if we get in person fit for them.

Why did I reach this, well, 2 reasons. First is pretty much what you said word for word. I wouldn't feel like I was putting them completely through the paces if I didn't take the chance go take what I know is a weakness in my bag and see if the G710 can't turn it into a strength.

Second, and maybe more importantly, I'll have data to back up whatever choice I make. The opportunity to use Arccos to see performance, where the club fits in my gapping, and other information will allow me, as a golfer and consumer, to make a better choice going forward in my club preferences.

Jury is still out on SW though, that's one I do want to try at the fitting but I wouldn't mind it either way.

Trust me Rick, I'm not. The set of Cobra irons I'm coming from I went to SW, if course there was the one length consideration there. Seeing as I may be using the 54* in whatever I get primarily as a potential 12 iron so to speak over an around the green club, it'll get a long look to make the bag.

+1.  My G410 W and UW are rock solid and complement the set very well.  I think testing the full set of irons provides the best review - because you never know 🙂.

Where do they post the actual reviews?

They will be at the top of this thread under each testers name.  They will update the placeholder posts.

However,  it's going to be a while yet.  The testes were selected just as PING went into the mandated shutdown, and they are just now opening this week.  There is still a lot to be done in the way of fittings and then the ordering.   But check back here regularly as they will be updating the thread on the process once it gets going.

Feel free to ask them any questions as well about the fittings, or ordering or there thought process on what they ordered and why.

Yet another update. For you of you earlier in the thread wondering how Ping's online zoom fittings work do I have some good news for you! @Golfspy_CG2 told us today our emails are off the head of this program and we'll all be going through the program!

Yeah, they want us to do the static measurements, compile a WITB, Launch Monitor Data if we have any, and Accros data or the like if we have it. Also perhaps screen share a video of our swing from face on.

EDIT: Trying to find an open launch monitor in Central New York is trying to find a needle in a haystack, without a needle in it.

This is awesome, I can't wait to see how the zoom fittings go. Personally I would take all the clubs from 4 to SW to try, you can't really lose. Besides Ping have been building such excellent wedges recently they just have to be good 😁😎
