Popular Post GolfSpy_SHARK
Hey all, here are my initial impression on these clubs hope you enjoy! Pre-Arrival/Arrival: After my virtual fitting with PING, the communication was honestly top notch. Bill, who is a Head-Master Fitter from PING, was always informative and kept me in the loop. Customer service needless to say, was A++. The clubs were received on 5/20 within 10 days after the fitting. During these times to me it was really unprecedented and was expecting a longer lead time. The clubs came in and again I was really just blown away from the care that was taken in packaging. All the clubs had covers and whoever packaged them and engineered the boxes…well done because there was 0 room to spare. PING really blew me away initially with there professionalism and quick turnaround that’s all I can really say, can’t speak highly enough of that. But we aren’t here to talk about PING are we (the people anyway just the clubs)? So on to the sticks Set: Anyone that did not see my fitting, I went with 4-UW with Project X 6.5 X-stiff shafts with Golf Pride grips with Arccos. First Impression: So, first impression was WOW. The black really stands out. The grey on the face really offsets and compliments the black well. The finish on these clubs are silk (and I do not really like black clubs). When they say Hydro-pearl they mean it. The paint looks so smooth (more on that later) compared to your typical silver finish. I do not currently have a set to compare them to because I sold mine and am waiting on the other set, so will have more on this later. Initial thought though was that they were smaller at address than I anticipated. I was expecting a larger overall look but between the black club and grey face, it’s “slimming” (is that why they call it a little black dress?). Compared to my CBX2 wedges you can see a massive difference. Another thing I noticed was right at the hosel and heel there is a nice groove taken out, assuming to remove some of the weight and place closer to the toe for all that forgiveness. It complements the profile of this club nicely. The Arccos in the grip was different for me. The grip felt bigger on the palm of my left hand, which they are slightly but was noticeable. Not a bad thing but just a note if you never used Arccos. I think I would prefer the inserts VS it in the actual grip like these. Lastly the Arccos was very easy to setup, took me longer to get the cover of the unit itself than it did to pair. On to some modeling before we get into the first use of these bad larrys: Fortunately, I was able to get right out for my 1st round of the year the day after I received the clubs, got to love that because the itch was real waiting for these bad boys. SO lets get right into it! First Crack at these Beauties! My biggest questions going into my first round with the clubs were: What am I looking at for distances? How are these going to do in the morning dew grass? How is the finish overall after just one round? My question for this was because my previous black wedge showed signs of wear right after its first use. My first shot with the clubs was a 4 iron. Not a great tee shot and had myself in some trouble in thick rough. The 4 iron sliced through the rough with ease, if there was any grab I didn’t notice it! I was pleasantly surprised with sound. The only time I have ever heard or seen PING was @b.boston driver and was not a fan of the sound, and from what I have read its not for everyone. To me for these G710’s the sound was a good “crack”. It almost was like the sound of a pure wood bat. I loved it. I had my fare share of good and bad shots today. The sales position for forgiveness is accurate, and that is putting it lightly. I usually have a light fade and bad shots are…bad fades (can you hear me yelling four while reading this?). These mishits and bad shots I found put myself in far less worse situations than I would normally find myself in. The distance on these clubs after my first round is also REAL! Granted loft is slightly different but to put it into perspective the 4 iron for me was anywhere from 220-230 today, as I like to say...: The ball flight was almost majestic. It was a little different for me just because I am used to a stronger fade but there were several times the ball seemed to just be straight at the flag. One example was on the shot trace PW @b.boston was able to get a great video. Shot Trace PW Shot Trace 4 Iron Throughout the round I was keeping an eye on water and how much I was going to need to clean these. The below picture is right after a swing in the dew…there was barely any moisture on the club, very impressive. As many of you are used to I am sure in the morning dew the club has the grass stick as well as substantial water build up. These virtually had 0 moisture on them. Curious how this will hold up after many rounds (and I love morning rounds so they will get wet). Another thing I will be keeping an eye on is the dirt build up. These were very easy to clean I am assuming it’s the finish because I barely needed my brush just a towel and they were good. The only thing I noticed post round was the buildup in the numbers on the sole, the brush wasn’t quite cutting it so will have to do some investigating on maintaining that. (Picture below on the 4 iron) Lastly the finish after 1 round showed no blemishes and actually fared better than my wedges which are also brand new. The sole of the wedges were showing swing path swirl marks, the G710’s wiped down perfectly with virtually 0 blemishes. To wrap this bad boy up I am highly impressed so far especially coming in skeptical on the black finish and what I thought they would sound like.. Things I will be looking at is : -Continuing to gauge distance gains and what my true numbers are with these. I struggled with that today. -Also creating some dispersion tracking and see if this forgiveness passes the smell test (smelled pretty good today I will say that) -Will be keeping a keen eye on the finish and if it holds up as well as it did today! GolfSpy BOS
Nice! They looked real nice in your bag today. The black really does hell hide the size of these, felt good on the swing I took with one of them. I was also impressed by the sound. Not at all what I was expecting. Popular Post Berg Ryman
So range session today Short Irons The wedges and short irons were exactly what I expected. Go high, good descent angle, maybe like 5 yards longer on range balls. The sole gets through the turf pretty simply and launches the ball right up there. Mid Irons Seven and Six iron were pretty solid. Again, similar to what I was expecting on performance, launching high and look like the would be holding a lot of greens Long Irons So this is where things are going to take some time. Not having clubs of this length in my bag for some time is tricky because I'm struggling right now finding where my swing is bottoming out so I can catch them fat and chunk them if I'm not bottoming out consistently or paying attention on swing path. These will take some work but when they are struck they are rocketships. General Thoughts So a couple of quick things. The finish held up pretty well against range balls. There is a slight scratching on the UW which is in the uploaded photo, but that was the only club on which it happened. Also, @Lacassemis right, those chrome numbers are dirt magnets. It isn't putting me off yet because i like my clubs to show some wear, but it'll be something i keep track of. Tomorrow is my first full round of the yeqr and we'll let you know how it goes. On the face itself they show up really well on the grey and were easily spotted which was very helpful. Couple heel shots today not to much off the toe. and shoutout to B.Boston For getting that workI have a buddy that games the 700’s. I play with him a lot. To me they sound like hybrids, which I don’t like. He hits them well though. I’d be curious to know if there were a difference in sound between the 700 and 710. I love the black - you need some sort of glare mitigation in Florida. But until then enjoy the modeling: Impressive write up Bro But be careful who you hang out with LOL sirchunksalot and JohnSmalls 2 Quote SpeedZone Pars and Stripes 9.5* Driver 14gm weight in back, VENTUS Blue 6-R set to +1* draw. 14.5* Fairway, 18.5* Fairway, 22.5* Fairway. JonMUSC08
did get out there and play a round on Thursday. We had a good bit of rain the day before so i was a bit nervous playing on soft soil. Didnt get much warm up time too... I typically shoot abt 90... shot an 84!! had 3-4 legit birdie attempts. My driving wasnt real good as im normally a 50-65% fairway hitter. Still saving my scoring to a later date in order to give them a fair shot. Lots I do like, a little I do not prefer. Obviously hitting new clubs that you've never hit before is a change so im working on minor adjustments. Im def not a pro or a single digit hdcp'r so my ball striking isnt as pure. Kinda remember what is the fault of the indian and what is of the arrow. Still loving the wedges (PW, SW, UW) as I hit some awesome shots. Im about 75/25 on the 4-iron that i was loving on the range. Hit like 2-3 awesome 4-iron shots abt 205-210 (gamer 4 iron was removed from my bag. Only went 180-190 anyway and rarely hit it well). My putting was very good too; less than 2 putts per hole. Great solid feel. Many guys mention like a wood bat and I agree; doesnt matter if its dead center or off the toe/heel. cnosil, MaxEntropy, sirchunksalot and 4 others 7 Quote Charleston, SC HDCP 13.0 Driver: M6 9* with 65g Stiff Mitsubishi Tensei Red shaft 3 wood: G425 stiff shaft 5 wood: Stealth 2 stiff shaft 4-gw irons: JPX 921 Hot Metal w/ X-stiff KBS 130gr shafts (soft stepped) Wedges: MG3 52, 56, 60 Putter: 34" Scotty Cameron 12.5 Ball: ProV-1x Tracked By: MGS Tester '20 - G710 Iron Review MGS Tester '19 - Precision Pro NX9 HD Pro laser rangefinder
Popular Post Berg Ryman
Ok, so I've played 36 holes over the past 72 hours with these irons and have some opinions, some ok, some that raise a slight red flag. Scoring wise I didn't really keep a running score, only kept notes of good swings, save for starting with a birdie on the first hole of the season for the third straight year. The Positives - I love the sound of these irons, as it's been said in this thread so far it has a distinct feel, almost like a crack and that's pretty true to form. They feel solid and sound solid, regardless of where you strike the ball, and that's something I can get behind. - The finish is holding up pretty damn well, and given where I was hitting some shots that's an impressive feat. The club frames the ball well, especially the famous white line-up line on the bottom of the clubs - My my Modus, what a nice feeling shaft. It really feels like I can be more aggressive on swings with it and it makes the irons feel wonderfully balanced and swingable. The Negatives - Distance so far has been lacking. Part of me wonders if this is because my swing is still in early days, but yesterday shots were coming up 5+ yards short of what I would have expected. I will put some blame of this on me because my swing is a bit of a shambles right now, but I will keep checking these numbers, especially when I get Arccos up an running on these bad boys. - I know many of you see SGI irons as irons with training wheels, but let's be real, a bad swing = a bad result. I've adjusted to the wedges length and the short irons as well, but the longer irons will decidedly take time. I haven't struck a good 4 iron yet in multiple attempts and 5 iron is a rare beast at this point in time as well. What Comes Next Well, what comes next is some range sessions this week/weekend leading to one of the more interesting decisions I've made in a while. I signed up just under the wire to compete in the Local Newspaper Amateur qualifying tournament in 6 days. Yep, you read that right, a guy with a swing that isn't ideal with a bag he's pretty much played only 2 rounds with is gonna try and make the cut in a local amateur tournament after not playing in one for nearly... 8 years?
