Lacassem your dogs are absolutely beautiful! I love pits, they're such good dogs.
Glad to see you have the Arccos set up, it's a great way to gather data and it truly helps to improve your game.

Lacassem ’s dogs are the best. The black one will literally lay next to you all day. The brown one is pretty energetic still!

I am in the process of going through Golftec swing lessons... Had my swing analysis the other day. Hit the 7-iron for analysis. If he would have shown a dispersion map, it would have been very tight. Needless to say, im a 12-13 hdcp so my ball striking isnt as consistent as Tiger. This definitely has some validity to the G710 irons helping. After the 3 lessons i get, i will also have a club fitting so I am very interested to see what will be the best irons for me; stay with the G710 or see if there is something I hit better.

You didn't read my qualifying statement. It's not you, it's the brand.

Which is actually really tough. I met with our local rep for each this week and they are two of the best in the industry.

How bout a tie with no tiebreaker or playoff 😎

Clubs are starting to show wear.

Not surprising.  Honestly I don't think any of these CVD or PVD technology coatings can withstand normal wear without quickly looking like crapola.  Even a set of PING kryptonite PE2's with these coating won't last. The dark colors while very cool looking just highlight every scratch and ding.  For those who could care less what their arrows look like - no problem.

That’s a shame the finish wears quickly. It’s a really nice looking iron and feels great (I hit a 7iron @ Golf Store). The Demo club also showed more wear than I would like.

Got a 2nd round in with the G710's on saturday! Shot an 85 (1st rd was 84; typically should 88-90). Lost 3 balls (2 off the tee and hit a flier wedge too far over a green).

Loving the scoring clubs 8-SW. Like throwing darts! I prefer using a SW for chips/pitches and i feel SSOOO confident over the ball with that club in my hand.

The scratches on the PVD finish havent irked me yet but i cant imagine them not getting worse...

Had my golf boys weekend this past week. Great time and the PING's enjoyed the view. I was able to get some great shot tracing on the 8 irons to show height difference on them. Will be on my final review which I have enough information and feel for these to post in the next week. Until then!

They truly are cool looking.  Unfortunately PING (like the other OEM's with dark finish coatings) are going to take some negative hits on poor cosmetic wear. I'll be interested to hear reviews from users at large, beyond the MGS review... though fully expect the results to be the same regarding that issue.  I've never seen a make/model iron with dark coated finish hold up.  Until someone invents a process that does, I'm kind of surprised they venture into this territory.  Perhaps they just can't help themselves because they are so "drop dead sexy" 😄.

I have the SM7 wedges in slate blue and after 30 hits it’s the best I’ve seen for a darker (but not black) finish. It was also a limited edition and used a different manufacturing process so it’s essentially a dark chrome finish so it is supposed to hold up better. So far so good, but it’s still lighter than the G710 finish. IMG_0125.jpgIMG_0126.jpgIMG_0128.jpg

Those are really cool looking. Articles I found on these state that they use a PVD process with a novel material.  Vokey even discusses the cosmetic wear issue with color coated irons.  PVD coatings are very superficial - like 2-5 microns. It would seem the trick is to process the club head prior to the coating process such that it has a similar color to that of the coating. That way, when the coating is undermined, you can't see a difference.  I'd love to know how they run this build process, but it is listed as proprietary - and for good reason it seems.

https://mygolfspy.com/vokey-adds-slate-blue-finish-option-to-sm7-wedge-lineup/

https://www.titleist.com/teamtitleist/b/tourblog/posts/bob-vokey-introduces-sm7-wedges-in-new-slate-blue-finish

Sure looks like the Titleist recipe is holding up.   Don't want to send this thread off into a tangent but who else is playing these wedges and how is the finish holding up?  If Titleist ever offers this "slate blue" finish in a set of forged T200 irons, the other OEM's are in trouble. 🙂

Sure looks like the Titleist recipe is holding up.   Don't want to send this thread off into a tangent but who else is playing these wedges and how is the finish holding up?  If Titleist ever offers this "slate blue" finish in a set of forged T200 irons, the other OEM's are in trouble.

I’ll only say this and not try to hijack the thread.
Stopped at the golf shop this morning and they had a LH set of black Titleist AP3 irons. My goodness, I ran out of there. Wether it’s Ping or Titleist I love clubs w black finish.

We have compared these to the PINGs and it’s not even close. No spoilers but titleist is onto something for sure

Playing my 3rd round tmrw. Same course that I played my first round. If i shoot mid 80's or lower than I legit blame the clubs for improving my scores (possible spoiler).

The feedback so far on the wear issue on the black finish is huge for me.  I had high hopes that the 710's would hold up better, especially since Ping got so much negative feedback on the 700's wear and they weren't even black.  I'll probably have a hard time rationalizing the price point on these as a result.  Still will probably demo/test/get fit for them.  If they were significantly better performing than any of my other sets, I might be able to put up with the cosmetic issue.  LOL

Alright everyone, let's talk about Iron Only Round #1.

First, the location, a nice warm Juneteenth Friday in Central Sqaure, NY at Caughdenoy Links. A former farm pasture turned into a golf course in 1995. It's been through a few owners over the past few years but it has found residence under the RJ Graham golf umbrella in NY, owners of 3 other courses. I've played there in the past but have had struggles, elevation changes and small and tricky greens makes the course play a bit harder than its rating and slope would indicate. From the white tees, it's 6194 yards, rated at 68.9 and sloped at 114, likely because it's wide open if you're hitting driver well. Snaking throughout the court are water hazards, including Caughdenoy Creek, which was the course's old name.

But enough about the course, you're wondering how I played right? Well, I think I played pretty well if I say so myself. I shot at nice little 81 (+9), going 41-40. When adjusting my handicap to the course handicap I was playing off a 7 around there, so a net 74 (+2).

Real talk, everyone should try one of these rounds. I had an absolute blast and it helped me understand my game even more and why I do the things I do. First thing first, I hit 4 iron off every tee accept for par 3's and man, when I swing it and nail it it flat out preforms. I'm going to say this right now, I'm going to be a long iron player from here on out. Maybe not GI or Blade Long Irons, but utility irons and wide soled long irons are for some reason really performing with me. I averaged around 195 off the tee with it, which is long for me in the space which the longest getting out there to 214.

Now that I've been working through these irons for a wild I can say that the distance issue was more me than the clubs. They may be a touch longer, maybe not a crazy distance increase, but the launch and ability to get good landing angles is awesome with these. The one downside and where I think @blackngold_blood may have the advantage is in scrambling. It is hard for me to hit the types of shots I like to around the green with these wider soled wedges. I'm sure that @JonMUSC08 may be having a different time with his SW and I can't wait to hear about in his review, but it's just not for me.

So, let's talk Arccos. Being honest, I really enjoy being able to stat track and get approximate measurements to greens in a way to help me. There were a few bugs with Caughdenoy's mapping which meant I couldn't fully rely on the numbers, but the numbers I did trust were pretty damn spot on. Namely they had the wrong greens mapped for the 9th and 18th holes since the basically almost use the same tee. It was also spotty on tracking the chips and short putts which let to editing on almost every tee. I'm hoping it gets better and it's not anything that's disqualifying, just a note. Also, no surprise here, the thing I'm best at is putting (+.9) and I'm not taking driving serious in this round as I was using 4 iron for the most part, handicapped at 19.8. Approach handicap was 7.6, chipping was 8.9.

Oh, also I continue to see a lot of talk about the finish on these. Well, I'm going to be putting that finish to the test because coming up for me in July is another fun competition on these forums and one I strongly suggest, put on by one of my favorite members @JohnSmalls, the 2020 Hard Rock Challenge. If these can hold up to some of the rocks that'll be hitting these faces, you know that iron is built to last. You can learn more about the HRC right here.

So, one more iron only round to go and I know it's going to be at my home course because I think I can really make it happen if what I was able to do at a course I haven't had the best of success at. I wish you all the luck in the world @blackngold_blood, looks like you might be needing it.
