Alignment Sticks—Do you use them?

I've never used them, and I started wondering if I need them.

Why would I need them?

Do you use them?

How have they helped your game?

Never used the actual alignment sticks, a club laid on the ground (of which I have 12 others in my bag) does the same thing, and less to carry around.

Only thing an alignment stick can do that a club cant is stick it in the ground if you want plane angles, or takeaway aids etc, but if you just want to align your feet and clubhead/path etc then I've used clubs in my bag for 4 decades.

you don't need them,  but doing a quick google search for how to use golf alignment sticks should give you ideas on how to use them

I use them for alignment,  gates,  and markers to indicate plane.

Cant say they have helped or hurt.

Thanks. I saw Padraig Harrington using one incidentally as he demonstrated pitching off his deck on instagram, so I wondered about how common they are.

Mine go to the range every time with me.  I use them for feet alignment and I will stick one in the ground that helps me remind myself to shore up the left side so I don't start swaying.

I use driveway markers.  Cheap and easy to stick in the ground.  I tend to leave one behind on an occasion so its not a huge loss if I leave it.

I use them regularly.  For general alignment, you could just as easily use a couple of clubs on the ground.  If it’s wet, however, your grips will get damp.

I tend to align right of the target if I don’t pay close attention to my set up.  This year I practiced with an alignment rod stuck in the ground on my target line about 15 feet in front of the ball and one on the ground about two feet in front of the ball, pointed to the rod stuck in the ground.  It has helped me to adjust my perception and to get aligned to the target.

The above can also be done green side for chipping and pitching.

I also use them to build a “goalpost” for pitching.  Stick two rods in the ground about four feet apart and tie a string between them, about three feet high.  Practice pitching under the string with a high lofted wedge.  It is great for controlling trajectory.

I use them regularly on the range for alignment purposes by laying them flat, for drills to draw or fade by placing 5-10 yards ahead of you etc. they do not take up much room in the bag and if you live in cold weather places you can use the driveway markers for snowplowing, they work fine. A group called toursticks.com has a training video on the web. Good luck

Nope a golf club on the ground works fine. If you really want to buy something for the specific purpose driveway markers from the hardware store are cheaper.

I use them for alignment at the range. I tend to get lazy when it comes to aim and my fallback is setting up too open so they’re a good aid for me.

Yup $2.00 at your local hardware store and if you want to eliminate the fiberglass slivers buy a roll of shrink tubing at you auto parts store for $5.

Yes, I definitely use alignment sticks in practice - tho mine are old sail battens, which are flat (so tend to stay put better vs round!).

One way I use them in practice .. to help with one of my major swing flaws in not fully shifting my weight forward - is to lay it perpendicular to the target line and between my feet, closer to the front foot and even with (pointing at) the ball. Then after you swing, freeze and slowly look down to check where your hips / weight center is - ie. behind, even with, or in front of the marker?

I also use them for alignment as I have a tendency to set up open to my target line. I don't think it's been been mentioned in here but another method is to set up a "T" with one marker down your target line and one perpendicular from your ball position.

I really like the idea above of laying down an intermediate target line marker - gonna try that!

I use them while warming up because the hitting bays are angled differently than the driving range itself; leading to some weird things happening for the first few holes. I use two alignment sticks, one for my feet and one for the starting line of the ball. I use the one for the ball to have a reference for face angle so I can practice draws/fades and see what I can/cannot hit that particular day.

Also, I wouldn’t buy golf alignment aids; go to your local hardware store and get driveway reflectors, I paid $2 each.

Some sort of aiming aid should be used regularly, people get kind of lazy with their aiming when practicing and this helps you think about one less thing.

Nobody needs them. The use of them is dependent on what you are trying to accomplish. The basic function is to help with alignment that’s the main use. Anything beyond that is bonus. They can be used for ball position training similar to a T track. They can be used for training putting stroke, putting speed, working on various aspects of the swing, a fixed point to work work on shot shaping.

like any training aid and practice the will improve ones game if used in the right way with the right purpose.

I use alignment sticks during my practice sessions. For me they help make sure I keep my ball position consistent. I've found that with my swing keeping the ball in the same position for every iron works best. I widen or narrow my stance depending on the length of the club. I try to keep the ball about a club head's width inside my lead foot. I set up a t with the sticks then position the ball at the cross stick. I'll attach a pic.
