hybrid vs driving iron

I have been wanting to fill the gap between my 4 iron and 3 wood. I need something that is either 19 Degree or 20 Degree hybrid or driving iron...... open to suggestions..... I mainly want it for off the tee, a club I can use to confidently hit the fairway.  Any suggestions on what i should get?

How well do you hit your long irons?  I have a 3 hybrid and a driving iron.  I NEVER hit my hybrid off the tee anymore.  I hit my long irons really well and find that I can control the driving iron fairly well.  It is easier for me to shape.  I cannot shape my hybrid.    That being said, if you don't hit your long irons well, or if you want to hit a higher shot I would say go hybrid.

@ballplayer002003 I would say i hit my long irons average. I hit them consistently better/ more accurate than my 3 wood. So probably leaning towards driving iron because i also like a lower ball flight. Do you have a driving iron that you like?

I would try to demo 17-18 degree options, especially if it will mainly be an option off the tee. That is a big gap to fill. Nothing has been able to knock my 17deg hybrid out of the bag even while experimenting with a 20deg driving iron since it was better from a variety of lies compared to the DI.

I have an old Callaway Apex UT.  It's old, so I am sure there are new ones on the market that are more forgiving.  I have tried the Callaway X Forged and liked that one, but I only use my driving iron on about three holes at my home course so I couldn't justify spending the extra cash on it.  I would try the X Forged, TM P790, Srixon Z U model.  Taylor Made has the GAPR that a lot of people like, I just think it looks more like a hybrid so it would defeat the purpose in my opinion.

I like the adjustability of the cobra king utility iron, it can suit a range of lofts. It's hollow head construction and I feel good hitting it off the tee as well as different fairway lies. It's not too chunky, it's just right for me.

Driving iron for me. I wanna love hybrids soooooooooooo much, but I just can't get along with them definitely the Indian's fault.

To me the hybrid is more of a recovery club from the rough. Driving iron is more of a controlled shot from tee or fairway.

I have a 19* 3 hybrid and a 19* 3 iron (details below) and I’ve been carrying both. I’m a little straighter with the 3i with decent trajectory, but I hit the 3H a little higher and further. I usually use the 3i off the tee or a really nice fairway lie, but the hybrid is less likely to chunk from fairway (tight lie) or light rough for me. Having both is usually worth more to me than carrying a lob wedge, that’s the trade I’ve been making. BUT many people are decidedly more comfortable with hybrids while others are more comfortable with long irons. So it’s a personal choice if you don’t want to carry both.
