Quarantine golf

Just wondering if there's any members living in San Diego that knows of some courses that are open during this time? I am beginning to develop stock home syndrome being locked up and not being able to play. Hope everyone is being safe out there.

isn't the idea behind a quarantine to stay indoors where possible, stay safe and take the strain out the health system?

I’m pretty sure that the governor closed all courses on Monday or Tuesday of this week. Most states have shut down golf as non essential business.

I saw a report yesterday that 12 states have closed golf courses. I see no problem with it as long as people social distance themselves. Open air therapy used to be a thing....before the invention of antibiotics.

Issued this week for NYS. It’s for the good despite the mild weather. I’ll just have to find some time to practice in the yard.

We (in Virginia) have all non-essential businesses closed, but last I heard (a few days ago) many (possibly most) courses are open, but there are limitations. Some have no range. Most wipe down carts, restaurants/grills closed, only one group on tee box at a time, no rakes in bunkers, etc. Hoping to get out in a few days, if they are indeed still open.

The Executive Directive on Monday for Virginia didn't shut down golf courses, but they're required to take precautions.  In my are of Northern Virginia, the County and Park Association courses have been closed.  I understand that some privately-owned public courses are open, and my home private club is open.  One player per cart, no rakes or water coolers, only carry-out food, pool noodles in holes to keep the ball near the lip, and no hanging around before or after.  With golf, we can stay pretty far from each other if we pay attention, but old habits are hard to break.

I have been finding it seems to depend on the course; the last course I played still had rakes and allowed multiples in carts.   Still haven't found any courses that are closed...or at least the ones I typically play.

  • 2 weeks later...

Plenty of courses around here still open.  Plenty closed, too.  Golf really is one of the safer activities that we can participate in.  Makes no sense to close the courses.

Plenty of open courses here in Arkansas.  Each course seems to be doing things a little differently.   But if the government catches on that a bunch of people from out of state are playing golf, then they will shut it down like they did the parks.  City parks were already closed, but then the state run parks like the ones along the Buffalo River were closed due to out of staters (thanks Tennesseans).

Oregon still has courses open, although some have chosen to close temporarily.  I've played twice during the quarantine and haven't had any issue with keeping a safe distance or touching anything.  I think we need to keep open air venues open for the public. Being outside is good for your immune system! Trust me I'm a healthcare professional 😆😉

I think the difference is population density. East coast is so much more densely populated that there needs to be the stricter measures.

Our course opened up April 1st and I've played (not very well) 9 rounds so far. FYI my wife who doesn't practice and is very casual about the game beat me by 3 strokes yesterday. Maybe she's on to something.

Population density should have no impact on golf course operation.  It doesn't matter what the density is in the local area, if there are 4 (or 5) per tee time and they're 8 (or 10 or 12) minutes apart, then they're safe.  There's no reason golf can't continue.

Oh I totally agree.  I've played a few times and haven't contacted anyone other than those in my group.  And even then we were able to keep our distance.  The difference is in area's where the virus is affecting peoples lives more you're going to see more "non-essential" operations like golf courses shut down for the sake of public safety.  I'm of the opinion though that golf courses in general should be left to make their own decision's on whether or not to continue in operation because of the space it allows people to keep.  Ultimately we're in a unique time and I think we need to have grace for the people making these decisions.

This conversation could go on for ages, but since I'm new here, I don't know how political discussions are viewed and I'll bow out.  I think we agree on this topic for the most part though.

Shouldn’t any business decide what’s best for themselves? The term essential means it can be interpreted by everyone differently.

There are lots of questionable decisions being made. I’ll use NY as an example. They announced last week that they were starting to flatten the curve and that the numbers predicted for beds had dropped by 75% from 2 days prior. They determined at that point that golf courses were non essential despite them being open the entire time and it didn’t stop them from being able to get the curve to flatten and reduce the number of cases. Now they are implementing gloves and masks in public. If things are getting better despite those not being in place what is it doing now that couldn’t have been done before

At some point, its the governments job to make difficult decisions in the interest of the public good.  I agree, we can each have a different interpretation of "essential", so it becomes important to have SOMEONE define it, and those in government have that difficult task.  A business could choose to remain open, putting their own interests ahead of public health.  I can't say any specific states, or specific golf clubs and courses, made all the right decisions, or the wrong ones.  None of us really know what's required to keep the end result as good as possible.  Those in power (I hesitate to use the term politicians, but they eventually make the decisions) are doing the best that they can with the information available.

Personally, I believe that golf can be played reasonably safely in these difficult times, and its a good way to get outdoor exercise.  But the maintenance crew has to work to make that happen, so they need an extra degree of caution.  Our club's restaurant is open for snack bar and carry-out, and those folks absolutely have to work fairly closely.  I'm happy for the way the club's choice, and the Virginia government's choices, effect me, but if they choose to close things down in the interest of the safety of the staff, I won't complain.

You're right, I'm not sure how to define the appropriate extent of the government's "emergency" power, or when any "emergency" powers are no longer required.  On the other hand, would you base your own health on the willingness of the population as a whole to follow appropriate measures to minimize the spread of the disease?  Would you trust businesses, large and small, to voluntarily incur the additional costs in order do the right things?  I think history has shown that neither of those is a really solid bet.

Anyone know what the status is in Pennsylvania or Connecticut? I'm in New Jersey and going stir crazy. Would love to play 18 and walk just wondering if courses are open and if they are taking out of state residents for tee times.

FYI for those of us in SoCal, Greenskeeper reports some courses still open (not counting the private courses). Would have to call and double check. Arrowood in San Bernardino County (almost at the border with Nevada) seems to be open according to a buddy that played a round out there a week ago.

For those playing "Quarantine Golf" at home, what sims are you using? I have a launch monitor for measuring swing speed and ball speed but that is about it. SkyTrak is out of budget and I have an iPhone so Rhapsodo is out. How is the Garmin G80 I have heard some people using.

We've been fortunate here.  All courses are open but it's mandatory one rider per cart or walking.  No rakes in bunkers, foam round pin in cup, must leave pin in, no water coolers out on course, etc.  Since I'm working from home and live 5 minutes from the course, I've been walking nine 3-4 evenings a week.

Anyone know what the status is in Pennsylvania or Connecticut? I'm in New Jersey and going stir crazy. Would love to play 18 and walk just wondering if courses are open and if they are taking out of state residents for tee times.

Courses in CT are open. My parents who live in NYC are driving all the way up to CT to play.
