DIY backyard hitting net plans

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a good plan for a DIY backyard hitting net?  I'm thinking I could make a frame out of PVC, then put up a decent net and maybe a thick(ish) painter's drop cloth for a back drop.  I'm figuring at least 8' tall, maybe 10', maybe a 2-3 foot section at a 45° angle at the top pointed toward the hitter to knock down any stray popups.  Also, a side net to catch any s&#(ks.

Any good ideas?  If you've built one, that's great, post up some pics and details of what you did to build it.

If you do a google search  you will find some basic DIY plans,  but I think you have a pretty good idea on how to set one up.  The big question would be cost and if it would be any better than one of the nets you can buy online.

I know.  That's why I was hoping that someone that had done it before and learned some lessons along the way could point me in the right direction.  I've looked online.  Just don't see anything that really tugs at my heart strings.

Here was my setup until about 2 weeks ago, upgraded to a net return pro. Net was too old and too many balls were going flying through the neighborhood. B980E5EF-9BC4-4528-8B49-287E09E0BF49.thumb.jpeg.02043d3ba26cfb922307cd30e3481785.jpeg37D2616A-1BFE-4A31-A67D-27ACCC8C6714.thumb.jpeg.02e5cb5184f5b2dd2f74954451aa8316.jpeg

Simple but effective. 1 1/4” pvc pipe. Net was about 6 x 8 if I remember correctly. I also built a cover with 1 1/4” pvc and some tarps. 10’x16’ It works but is not that effective in the rain. I am awaiting the arrival of a carport, fully enclosed to arrive.

After pricing this one out, it can be built for around $200 if you use the pro high impact netting (recommended for >110mph swing speed) and about $150 if you just use the high impact netting (good up to 110mph).

That looks sweet!  I'm gonna have to get on it.  I'd love to be able to hit balls in the yard without having to worry about COVID-19!

PVC can work, but if you ever hit the cage flush with a real golf ball it will break.

I have a PVC setup in my garage, but I'm spooked hitting real balls in there over risk of damage.  I'm using a SKLZ Quickster 8x8 net with real golf balls in the backyard now.  The SKLZ works well.  I have a farmer's field behind my house so if I miss the net for whatever reason there's no harm.

I've resorted to using foam balls or birdie balls if hitting in the garage.

I figured as much.  If I build the one I linked above, I'm probably gonna try to make the supports that are directly in the hitting area about 2' behind the net/drop cloth to minimize the direct strikes to those poles.  I'm not ure what others would be in high risk areas.

The ways I can see PVC getting damaged:

1. Topped/very thin shots hitting the PVC at the bottom.  I've had this happen twice. The second time I had a cardboard box, like you'd buy used golf clubs in, in front of the PVC and the ball went through the box and still broke the PVC.

2. Shanks hit the left or right PVC - never happened to me.

3. Wedges that hit the top back PV - never happened to me either.

I'd imagine some guys are like the Nascar pit crew guys when it breaks and are able to repair it quickly.  The main thing is to be safe so it something happens either you or your stuff doesn't get damaged.

The nice thing about PVC is it’s cheap and easy to replace.

Our street hockey goals were PVC. Dad would build a 4’ x 6’ net and an extra 10’ with some extra elbows and fittings for the inevitable broken posts.

@THEZIPR23, with your hitting net did you ever have issues with hitting the PVC tubing? I have a 10x10x10 hitting cage/net I'm going to put up, and I'm thinking of the PVC since it is so cheap.. but wonder about durability.. I have also thought about putting Pool noodles around  the poles in case of errant hits.. since the kids and wife will be using it also..

PVC will be fine if you don't hit it, but it will absolutely shatter if you hit it with a golf ball - especially the wider diameter tubing.

I think I'm going to try the 11/4" pvc . Shattering is what I'm most worried about.. Any ideas besides the pool noodle to help prevent breakage?

Honestly just make the net wide and tall enough. I've never come anywhere near hitting the edges of my Rukket net. It is 9x7.

I did not, and it honestly didn't enter my thought process. But I could see how it would be dangerous if it was done. I would think a pool noodle or some similar foam would be sufficient, at least it would stop the PVC from flying around.

My son, who doesn't play any more 😢, was hitting balls one day and I had the net off the grass in planter which is lined with brick. Well he didn't move it back down and hit low screamer right into brick, richochet back over the top of his head, thank god, and right through living room window.

Average Golfer on YouTube built a really nice one.  He used something called archery netting iirc.  It looks like a thicker, more tightly woven net so the balls won't go through unless it straight up rips.  Also, instead of PVC, he used galvanized steel for more stability and durability.  It's probably not the cheapest build out there but it looks really solid.

I'd put up a link but the work laptop blocks YouTube.  Apologies.

It’s all about wall thickness, especially if you don’t want sag in the top cross member. The thicker you can get it while still being economical, the better. They also make foam filled PVC which will give it a bit of structure and impact tolerance, but it can be pricey.

I just got a pretty minimal setup in my backyard. I got the Fiberbuilt Practice Station from Costco and a Rukket net. I also made an impulse purchase and bought a used Mevo which I am hoping to get today!

So far, I have been able to up to my 54* without flirting with the top of the net.

That's what I'm going to use.  Might be an issue the further away from the net you go, but otherwise should be OK.  It's not that expensive if it has to be replaced.

Progress so far. Canopy is the only thing left.

I will make a suggestion for anyone trying this, don’t do in during social distancing. Doing this by myself is almost past my limit. I’m going to get done and be too sore to hit balls.

Well the PVC tubing was a bust. At 10X10X10 the tubing bowed not just the top horizontal tubes the vertical tube also bowed under the weight. Causing the whole thing to tilt off to one side. That was in dry conditions with no wind. I was afraid that once the netting got wet that the whole thing would collapse.. So back in the box it went. I'll have to figure out something sturdier that won't break the bank..

If the 10 footers are too long you may be able to try joining 5 footers. May take enough of the bowing out.

I'm impressed how handy everyone is here. I would be sitting in a pile of disconnected PVC and tears if I tried doing this stuff. Awesome work though.

A year or so ago I built myself a hitting net using steel pipes (cheaper than PVC pipes where I come from) wrapped in foam pipe inslation. At first I designed the central panel the size of 2m wide and 2,5m high with attached right side panel of 1,5m wide and 2m high with adjustable angle to the main panel to catch the shanks I was battling with at the time. For the netting I used multiple layers of cheap anti hail net (to protect yineyards, gardens etc.), folded over the top ''rail''. After a month of driving the ball into the net the balls started to penetrate the net so for this year I bough myself tightly woven thick archery net from eBay and decided to slightly enlarge central panel (by 0,5m in width) and ditch the side panel since I managed to cure my shanks. When the wet weather passes I will assemle the whole thing again in my garden and take a few photos.

That's awesome. Add a TV, couch, and refrigerator and you'll have no reason to leave.
