That's awesome. Add a TV, couch, and refrigerator and you'll have no reason to leave.

I told @PMookie that I am holding out for a bigger place before I tell the wife bye.

  • 2 weeks later...

A couple weeks ago, @MattF offered up a net and plywood base/hitting mat he used to use in his garage. The net was just a big net that he used to hang from hooks in his garage. Since I have a low-headroom garage, I figured I could make something to hang the net from out of pvc so I could swing in my back yard. Having seen other people talk about pvc sagging, I decided to make a gable design to prevent this. I didn't want to glue the pvc so I could tear it down and put in my shed when the weather turns. It's not something you'd want to put together/tear down for each use as it is fairly labor intensive. I use zip-ties to attach the net to the frame. I am going to play around with how best to mount the net. As it is in the picture is OK, but I want to change it up a bit to see if I can get a bit of ball return action. After hitting into it a few times over the weekend, I may need to glue a few of the high stress joints (in particular, the peak), just for stability. Here is the design I ended up with. It's about 10' wide and 10' high at the peak and 3' deep.

Costs:

Net = $0
Base/mat = $0
PVC pipe/fittings = ~$40

Because of how wet May has been, I can't actually put the base on the only flat spot in my back yard, so where it sits now ends up being a slight uphill lie, but it is better than nothing!

Here is Mr. Short Game's net construction video.

I have the Amazon basics net that is like the Rucket, I think it's 9x7, paid $52 for it last year, seems like a steal now.  Just be sure to start fairly close.  first shot I hit was a pitch with a 54, over the net over the fence into the neighbors backyard.  Luckily didn't hit it hard and no harm no foul, but it'll make you pucker the butt cheeks for sure...

I just got a pretty minimal setup in my backyard. I got the Fiberbuilt Practice Station from Costco and a Rukket net. I also made an impulse purchase and bought a used Mevo which I am hoping to get today!

So far, I have been able to up to my 54* without flirting with the top of the net.

I have the same net and just ordered the Fiberbuilt Practice Station. How do you like it? And is there any reason you have a tarp underneath it?

It was the first time I used it so I just wanted to keep it from getting dirty. That obviously didn't last long!

I am a bit torn on the hitting surface. I read it was better for your joints and was more realistic but I find that I hit way more fat shots than normal. Not sure why but that is just my experience.

On the plus side, you can't beat the ease of setup/breakdown of this mat. I bought a plastic bin and pack it up so it is out of the way when I am not using it.

This is my current set up, but I plan to "Upgrade" pretty soon by making the net a little taller and wider than it currently is (currently 7'w x 8.5'T....Next design will be about 10'W x 9' T and made with a wood frame and possibly roof and side net options) . Just waiting for my Mevo unit to come in to test it in a few places of my yard before building a more permanent set up. So far this has worked great though. Have hit a couple thousand shots into it and it still looks new up close. I also have a Rukket Haack Net to use when I take this one down to build the bigger set up, but it started to show wear after about 500 shots so hoping I can get the white one back up soon once I do start he project.

Progress so far. Canopy is the only thing left.

I will make a suggestion for anyone trying this, don’t do in during social distancing. Doing this by myself is almost past my limit. I’m going to get done and be too sore to hit balls.

Now this is dedication!!!!

This is amazing!!!!  Put me under the insanely jealous category right about now.  How do you like the SkyTrak?  Do you find it to be accurate enough?

I do. For the most part. It has trouble reading spin at times I think but usually only on wedges.
