Re-gripping at home... 1st time

Recommended Posts

Lockdown time-killer... I want to get a new set of grips to install myself. Any tips on building up the lower hand to reduce taper? Do I build up the lower hand with regular masking tape first, then cover it with a full length double-sided grip tape? Or can I do the lower hand build-up with the d.s. grip tape as well? Does it matter?

Unfortunately, I don't like any of the stock reduced taper OEM grips. Lamkin's Player Full Cord PLUS is out of stock. I wish GP would make their Tour Velvet Full Cord with the Plus4 feature.

Go to the Pure Grips website.....not only do they have awesome grips, but they will show you how to install with air.......so easy, no mess. All you need is an air compressor and the grip gun(you can get it from Pure).

I tried with the compressor before and found it more difficult compared to just loading up on solution and making sure it slides smooth. To each his own though.

Have done 2 times so far. Just need a good vice grip with the rubber shaft holding took. I also highly suggest the hook knife. Could probably use a straight blade but the hook makes it very easy to remove everything in 1 shot

Yes vote on the hook knife.  I've done several sets of irons in my days, and it's easy to do with only a few tools.  Having said that, as far as building up your lower hand, I think either option you mentioned in your original post is sufficient.

Golf works does have 'build up' tape. However, the MCC +4 seems to work pretty well in midsize ( note they also make a jumbo).

I use the wet method as well since I don't have an air compressor. I found it pretty easy once I bought a rubber shaft clamp for a vice and their knife for cutting old grips.

Golf works is my 'Toy' catalog.

Tried the compressor didn't like it, not as simple as videos make it. Classic solvent works fine. Just got MCC +4s to put on this weekend.

I've done both ways and they both have their pros and cons. I wouldn't try to use compressed air for a corded grip -- not sure if they stretch the same as the non-corded/rubber ones? I'd be even more hesitant if I were building up extra wraps of tape because I've personally never tried more than 1 wrap of painter's tape (I don't even use gripping tape when I install with air).

Get something to catch your solvent so you can re-use it, and a hook blade like others mentioned. I need to figure out a way to attach a painting tray to my grip station so I can catch solvent, but not sure how to because my vice runs parallel to the workbench due to space issues.

With air, there is little to no mess. If you have trouble with using air. Do you have the correct tools? Are you doing it correctly. The idea is not to use 2 sided tape if you are using 2 sided tape it will be a pain to put on with air.
I Use blue painters tape and build up the tape the way I want. The I dip a finger into some mineral spirits and put some in the opening of the grip and then wipe some on the blue tape. Just enough to get the grip started on the shaft without it sticking. Put my air gun in and it pushes right on takes about 1 minute From start to finish depending on how many layers of tape I use, and there is no mess. I can take the club straight to the course and use it.

I have used compressor but i prefer the wet method. With air compressor I found that the parts of the grip tend to move sideways (especially the butt section) and if you have align grips and OCD, it is a nightmare.

With wet method there are no such problems and if you want to remove the grip without destroying the grip you can easily do it.

With the blue tape how did the grip feel after? It doesn’t slip at all? My understanding of the double sided tape and mineral spirits is that ones it drys the grip adheres to the tape to prevent the grip turning and twisting while playing?

I have just used the double-sided tape to build-up the lower portions. I don’t think that 4 strips of double-sided equals the thickness of the +4 grips. For me, it felt small, so I’ve gone with more the last couple times.

You are correct. The masking tape thickness often does not equal the thickness of gripping double sided tape. Some time ago someone on WRX posted dimensions of various tapes. I found it again and posted link to it below. I hope it makes sense.

I use the double-sided tape from Golfworks, it still seems a little thin.

I did Try Align grips On my irons but had issues. the butt section will move, so those I needed to double side tape down. I didn’t Like them on my irons so I don’t use them. Outside of the align grips I haven’t had any issues with just using blue Painters tape. I’ve used it now for about 3 seasons with Lamkin UTx, Lamkin crossline, And now superstroke S-Tech grips. I prefer this method just for the stand point of mess, and cleanup. I have very little cleanup, and I can take the clubs straight out and use them, I don’t have to wait at all.

Remember if you use a standard grip and adding 4 wraps of tape under the bottom hand it will feel smaller because the material will be stretched thinner to fit over the tape. If you use a midsize grip instead it may feel closer to the +4. In reality if you use a standard grip and want +4 it may take 6 or 7 wraps to get the feel you want.
