GoPro and other Action Cameras

Recommended Posts

Hey Spies,

Anyone use GoPro’s (or similar) at the range or on course for a vlog of sorts? I was thinking about picking up one to get some fun and interesting shots on the course, and add some ball trackers and such.

I COULD use my iPhone, but with Arccos I’d rather get my stats, and if I’m going to drop it down on a tripod or bag clip I might as well use a better camera.

I want to use something more small and simple than my camera, which is a medium sized mirrorless camera. THAT would be sort of obnoxious. The goal is basically plop it down and turn it on as I was get ready to hit.

So who’s used one for golf or other activities? Anything specific I should be looking at?

I used this camera: https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Sports-Camera-Control/dp/B01FU6KDEG/ref=sr_1_3?crid=141Z2EGT6OY4F&dchild=1&keywords=yi+action+camera&qid=1600281521&sprefix=yi+action+c%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-3

To film this course log of Kirke's:

Because I wasn't playing, I didn't use a tripod or anything, but it seems like it should work fine. The biggest problem was the wind noise. I've read that there are decent wind noise reducers, but I haven't tried them yet.

I tried a GoPro hero 7 black with a vlogging case and external mic. It was still small enough but does a real good job or clearing out the wind noise.

There was an issue with the unit I received though so I didn’t get to do as much with it as I wanted to. I’ll probably pick another one up in the Spring cheaper since they just announced the Hero 9.

@GolfSpy MPR I was just going through your thread about Kirke! Thanks for sharing. I'll probably give the iPhone a try, and will follow up here. I was thinking about recording swing thoughts and stuff and playing over the shot. Not sure that makes sense...

In the past I've used the Sony Action Cams (an AS15 and an AZ1). I've also used my phone - the model has changed of course throughout the years. Currently using an iPhone 11 Pro. I also recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and have a RODE VideoMicro. I can use the microphone with my iPhone as well and have some Moment lenses and ND filters to help with various lighting conditions.

Problem is, I always feel so awkward showing up to the golf course with a bunch of camera gear in tow lol.

I picked up this "selfie-stick tripod" from Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NWC3L95/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And tested it with my iPhone. Then used iMovie to splice some clips, and add a voiceover.

I saw a lot of recommendations for Kinemaster to use as a video processing app on iPhone, so I'll take a look at that once I get some actual clips worth putting together.

I'll be uploading my work here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy78m3DfqFZszv9nhuO7HGw

Don't forget about the trade in program! I think you can trade in your old gopro towards a new one. I have an old gopro hero 2 sitting around that I will probably trade in towards a new one eventually!

They must think you are pro golfer recording your vlog when it is more like bad golf channel?

Yes, I've had and used those before.  Good little Tripods.  I had one for a point and shoot camera I had back in the day.

Works great for a gopro or small camera. They have large ones for DSLR cameras as well. My wife is into photography and has multiple sizes for various cameras.

I used a gorilla pod for a while.  I found that with time, the plastic lost its "tightness", so after a while it wouldn't hold the weight of my cell phone.  It was primarily the top swivel that had a problem, and I see that the current models seem to have changed that, it looks like a metal joint now.

I replaced that one with a tripod very similar to this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078BQ2MKY/ref=dp_prsubs_1

It seems much sturdier, with a metal "head" that seems like it will not wear out.  I like the flexible legs, I usually attach it to the top of my golf bag to get the right viewing angle for swing video/

A relatively cheap alternative, using your phone is to buy this holder.  Put it on an alignment stick.  At range can put stick alongside bag, has a connector clamp, and in back ride push stick into ground.  Amazing what you can see in your swing, especially after a lesson.

I found an iPhone tripod on Amazon with a Bluetooth remote that I attach to my belt. Make certain ur GoPro has a remote as well. Really cuts down on scrolling thru lots of shots.

The question to go with this post is: what app allows you to markup your video? I wanna draw lines to indicate the slot, posture, etc, so I can better identify my progress. Anyone know of anything for iPhone?

I use Golf V1. free version gives you all the functionality you are looking for. I believe they have both android and iphone apps. you can capture direct or import like I did using my GoPro. I have been working on rotating rather than swaying in my back swing and video recording is a big help to see what I am actually doing.
