Has anyone used this on the range and found any issues such as it tracking other people's shots? I know the unit has the aiming sights so that it is aligned behind the ball but wondering if it had any issues since there are multiple shots going on at the same time. Just ordered one used from Ebay and wondering if it is the right device for me if I will be using it almost exclusively on the range. Might be thinking of upgrading to a Mevo+ already...

No issues at the range.  The reason you need to enter which club you are using is because the device needs to know which launch "window" to focus in on.  It's not impacted by someone next to you.

I also considered the Mevo+, but keep in mind that there is about a 2 month backorder on these!

Agreed. I was thinking of buying on Ebay but either the sellers seem shady or they are scalping because they know the backorder time. Since I am mostly going to be on the range and can see the ball flight, I will most likely hold off on the Mevo+ until I can have a home setup. As long as it is not impacted by someone hitting balls next to me then the Mevo seems to be the way to go for me. Thanks.

You'll love it on the range. It doesn't have any issues picking up the ball and won't pick up balls from people around you. I have always found it to be remarkably reliable and accurate on the range and it's definitely the best entry level launch monitor for range use IMO. Mevo+ would be nice if you are doing lots of hitting indoors or into a net and need to simulate ball flight, but for outdoor use, I prefer the more compact size and lower cost of the Mevo. Hope you like it.

I bought my Mevo off Ebay last year thinking I was going to save some $$$. The seller had positive feedback rating. I struggled for almsot 2 months getting the unit to work properly. The Mevo support took a long time. I then had to by an "extended warranty" from Mevo to be able to get the unit looked at. I sent it in and they never told me what was wrong with it but acknowledged there was an issue and sent me a replacement unit. I think it was refurbished. But it worked! So in the end I wound paying what a brand new unit would have cost me anyways. So keep in mind what you find on Ebay most likely won't have warranty and you don't know if the owner had issues or took care of it properly. Honestly I would say just save yourself the headache and order a new unit. Just have to deal with the backorder time.

If i had to do it all over again, I'd probably look at the Rapsodo instead.

Interestingly, I seem to pick up the shots of people next time me occasionally. I just go in a delete the shots after. For sure I am loving the data it is giving me.

Sorry to hear that. My unit came ok and works just fine. Always a risk with Ebay but at least you have the guarantee that the item is as described.

I've had mine for about a year and last week was at the driving range in a bay with a small 3 foot partition and the Mevo was getting triggered by intermittently by the guy next to me, data was totally rubbish and spoiled my session. This is the 1st time I've noticed this.

Same here. Could be that means the stations are too close. But I just go in and delete those shots.

  • 1 month later...

reviving an old thread but is everyone leaving the unit on the ground when hitting off a mat and teeing off? I have yet to use this into a net at home with tour level balls (I play a TP5) so I have only used it on the range with range balls off a mat. Has anyone noticed it making a difference in numbers? I definitely notice a low smash factor (1.3~) but can verify I have hit the center of the face using foot spray on the face of the driver. Also carry distances seem a bit off but I am wondering if that is because it is range balls and energy transfer to those rocks isnt as good.

I've found that you can drive yourself a little crazy chasing numbers with range balls. 🤣 They just aren't consistent enough from ball-to-ball. I have never used the Mevo with a premium ball, unfortunately, because on course I need my phone for Arccos. I probably should play a practice round sometime and use the Mevo just for fun.

Not only can ball speed be a bit funny with range balls, the spin readings I get from them are inconsistent as well. You can get a lot of low-spin fliers reported on the Mevo as a result.

I leave the unit on the ground, as that seems to end up with the best shot of quality numbers and capturing every shot. Occasionally the Mevo will pick up the divot on a short iron shot and misread. I've also had issues with elevated tee boxes leading to some weird launch angle numbers. At the range I visit most often my driver launch angle will be 9-11 degrees consistently, which I find to be a little low. At another range, where the tee box is situated much higher, I've seen launch angles up near 20 degrees with a driver. Same ball flight, just different tee box elevations.

Not a perfect system to say the least, but still pretty cool and in my opinion definitely worth the ~$500.

For sure I know I shouldnt be chasing numbers with range balls! I just use it as a fun way to practice and just look at trends not individual shots so much. I am honest with myself and know when I hit a shot well and the numbers back it up. I also know when I hit a poor shot and know that the numbers may not necessarily represent that. I will try to and set up my hitting net and hit some of my tp5 into the net using the Mevo and see what types of numbers I get. will report back here once I do.

I'll be curious to hear your findings in regards to ball speed!

We still are getting temps into the 20s at night here and I've found that the range balls are super cold/slow at noon the next day yet from sitting out all night. I really, really should play a practice round with my MTB-Xs and see how the speed compares.

I'll be curious to hear your findings in regards to ball speed!

We still are getting temps into the 20s at night here and I've found that the range balls are super cold/slow at noon the next day yet from sitting out all night. I really, really should play a practice round with my MTB-Xs and see how the speed compares.

Hmm I have no idea what night temps are in the 20's as we are already in the 80's here in SoCal during the day and down in the 50's at night lol. Definitely don't miss living in NYC winters!

There is a course near my house that I may be able to get out and walk a quick 9 in the afternoon or just ask if I can hit some balls off the 10th tee right before sundown and use the Mevo to measure at least the drives that I can then compare with my Shotscope numbers and the GPS numbers on my Motocaddy M5~ yes I just got notification that they have been shipped and will be arriving tomorrow~

  • 1 month later...

@edingc quick update...so I tried to set up my Rukket Pop Up net on a patch of grass in my apartment complex aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnd it was a bad idea as I popped up a drive that went over the net and luckily into the empty lot next to the complex and not into someone's windshield so not doing that again...

I did managed to hit some real balls (TP5, ProV1x, Bridgestone something lol) into a screen at my local golf galaxy. For $30 you can rent the bay for 30 minutes and as long as it is not busy they will let you stay a little longer. Buddy and I hit wedges, irons, and driver on a GC2 (no HMT). I set up my Mevo on indoor mode as well to compare numbers. I placed the Mevo on the carrying case (for a range finder) as the mat was quite a bit elevated from the floor of the bay. I don't have the actual numbers or screens but I did notice some trends:

  • Wedge spin numbers (did not use the stickers) are consistently lower by about 2-3K RPM on the Mevo compared to the GC2
  • CHS on the GC2 without HMT is calculated using a fixed efficiency ratio so the GC2 without HMT is a terrible indicator for your actual CHS
    • can't even really begin to compare because you are trying to compare measured vs calculated using a constant
  • Ball speeds were fairly close
    • on wedges and mid irons the ball speeds were within 1-3 MPH +/-
    • on driver shots, the ball speed was consistently lower on the Mevo by about 5 MPH
  • Carry distances were fairly close until you get to the driver
    • can't compare total distance because the Mevo only gives you carry
    • wedges and irons the carry distances were within 5-10 yards ( i know this could be a club up or down for some people) but no consistency on +/-
    • driver carry distance was consistently lower on the Mevo by as much as 30 YARDS!!!
      • for example, my best drive was one that carried 270 and rolled out to 299 on the GC2
        • on the Mevo this came up as carry of 240ish
      • My buddy hit one that carried 285 and rolled out to 315
        • the Mevo recorded this as only 250 of carry
  • Launch angles were fairly close within 1-3 degrees +/- with any club

Overall I would say for the price, I still believe the Mevo is a great tool for looking at trends. Depending on the club you are hitting you can look at some of the data as fairly accurate (carry distance with wedges and up to mid irons, did not hit any woods other than driver so don't know about those, launch angles, backspin with driver surprisingly was fairly close within a few hundred RPM). The ball speed was also surprisingly close though I think the issue with the much shorter carry distances on the Mevo is due to the calculations being different. Based on how I have been driving the ball lately, I know that the GC2 distances were much closer to my actual than the Mevo. Still, now that I have that info, I know that I can add about 20 yards of carry to my driver shots on the range and track my trends in ball speed. Hope this info helps you and anyone else with a Mevo.

This is good feedback and confirms what I've come to learn about the Mevo. It is generally precise when using the same class of ball (range vs. gamer) with ball speeds. I don't question the ball speeds that come out of the Mevo with most of my clubs, though I will admit since the last update I am finding the driver to record slower ball speeds than it used to (especially in relation to the shorter clubs). It could be my swing, but my Arccos numbers don't reflect that.

(Notice I said precise and not accurate within class of ball - comparing ball speeds with range ball vs. gamer would not be accurate, though that's not the Mevo's fault. And ball-to-ball range balls vary quite a bit, too.)

I've given up on carry distances with longer clubs and range balls because it's too wildly variable depending on the spin numbers. Once you get to the 7 iron and shorter, it seems to be much more consistent to me. I don't dot my range balls, of course.

I really need to get on course with the Mevo and try it with my Snells.

Yeah I got a chance to hit some drives using my gamer balls on the Mevo at my local course a while back when it was empty. Buddy (same guy in the last post) and I took turns hitting and recording data on the Mevo. The carry numbers were pretty close. About 270 for him and 220 for me (this is about 6-8 weeks ago and my carry distance is now around 235-240 since I have been overspeed training). Definitely indoors and with range balls the carry distances for driver are significantly lower. Outdoors with gamer balls you should be getting much closer numbers to actual carry.

One of the reasons I stayed away from the Rukket is it's only about 5' tall. I went with a sports net 10' wide x 7' tall. My little side yard area is a little too cramped to hit driver with my Mevo setup to get the setup distance right when hitting into a net, but no issues with 5-9 irons. I can hit driver if I move closer to the net but then I'm not sure if I can trust the data. Mevo recommends to have at least 10' at least of travel distance into the net with the Mevo unit at about 6' behind the ball. (Also did you check your altitude setting? Not sure how much of a difference that makes tho). My mevo setup is probably closer to 4' behind the ball. But the overall travel distance from ball to net does seem to make a difference for me anyways. Closer than 10' mevo would miss some data or give me weird numbers. I bought a tub of ProV1X practice balls mint condition I found on Ebay. Not my gamer, but pretty close. So my numbers come out pretty accurate compared to when I hit on trackman at my fitter at least for carry distance. Still too nervous to try full swings with wedges into my net for fear of the pop ups. So more than anything, I use Mevo to work on getting as consistent numbers as possible. So even if numbers could be off, if they are close swing to swing, I know I'm working in the right direction. On the range I do notice I do get slightly higher distances compared to my gamer, but I guess that's to be expected with the range balls typically being firmer/higher compression.

I typically don't use me Mevo for anything other than range sessions. I occasionally look at the spin numbers which don't seem out of the realm of possibility, but I usually am focusing on practicing hitting certain carry distances. I like the chipping too for those carry distances.

I'm actually moved to a combo set instead of all P790s to P770s for 7-AW. Because of the Mevo, I was able to understand that my 7 iron had WAY too much carry on well struck balls. I want my 7 to go 175-180. Every so often I would launch one 195. Wouldn't have made the move to a combo set without the Mevo validating why my 7-9 irons distance control was just not there.

Yeah I use the Mevo almost exclusively on the range with range balls. Just don;t have the space right now to hit indoors or anything like that. I believe the numbers are fairly accurate for anything less than woods. I had someone who had a Trackman who knows her 8I club head speed hit on my Mevo and she said the numbers were pretty much spot on. Spin numbers I just tend to look at trends.

I also just changed my irons to Sub70 699 Pros because it was more consistent than my Mavriks. Yes I am about a club shorter due to the weaker lofts but the distances are more consistent. The Mavriks I usually carry my 7I about 145 and rolls out a bit more but sometimes I would carry one like 160 and roll out to 170. Dunno how the clubs affect the path but I noticed that with the Sub70's I get a ball flight that shoots up and then drops down vs the Mavrik's which would have a more parabolic flight. Not sure if it is clear from my description lol.

I ended up ordering a Mevo+ with the Father's Day sale, so I'll have some newer thoughts coming later next week. I bought it mostly for indoor work during the winter, but I like the idea of gamifying my range sessions a little bit more with the Skills challenge.

  • 1 month later...

I have a MEVO and SC300. For the past few months I have used them for short game practice, 40-70 yards.
What I have found, for normal, high shots, they are similar, within a yard or two, and pretty accurate.
If I hit a lower, groove low, hop and stop type of shot, the SC300 is accurate and the MEVO measured long by 5-10 yards.
I had a friend spot the landing of a lot of shot shots between 40-70 yards and using a rangefinder, compared the carry distance to those displayed on each device. Happy with both but would not recommend and MEVO for shot game measurements.
