Are You Ready for Golf Shirts Made From Recycled Polyester?

So this is where all those recycled milk jugs are going...

Got this press release today from a company called All 19 Holes announcing their new ECO-Polo shirt made from recycled plastic bottles. As with any recycled product, it's not cheap, selling at $89 on their website. As a cheap ba**tard, I don't like paying that kind of dough for any shirt, but then reusing 8 to 12 plastic bottles is never a bad thing.

What are your thoughts?

The innovative ECO-Polo is a shirt made entirely from the world’s finest recycled polyester.

All 19 Holes developed the ECO-Polo to meet its goal of environmental sustainability, style, and performance. And the ECO-Polo exceeded the company’s goals. Each shirt performs at the highest level possible, looks impeccable, and helps remove a small but important portion of the plastic pollution from the environment.

The ECO-Polo is up-cycled from eight to 12 plastic bottles retrieved from the ocean, a lake or a landfill, depending on the size.

The ECO-Polo’s recycled performance polyester fabric provides wicking, odor control, and is water resistant. The flat back honeycomb mesh features MaxDri moisture management and Micoblok, an anti-microbial finish. These technologies make the ECO-Polo comfortable for golfing or any activity. Fuse these benefits with a proprietary pattern cut for fashion and help reduce plastic pollution, the company feels strongly the ECO-Polo will be a category leader in golf.

We recommend washing the ECO-Polo in a cold and gentle cycle. Do not bleach, tumble dry, or dry clean. When ironing, use low heat.

It’s a good idea and was bound to expand into shirts. ‘47 brand has been making their cotton blend franchise hats with 2 bottles for almost a decade. If it lasts more than a few seasons without a rolling or pilling collar then it’s well worth the price.

I have a zip hoodie that I love made by Royal Apparel here in the USA that is 50/50 cotton/recycled polyester. Very comfortable, but it has pilled heavily over the years.

There is another USA-made company called Dirtball that makes polos (at $55, nonetheless) that use 6.5 water bottles per shirt. The fit isn't as athletic, however.

The 19 Holes polos do look sharp, nice fitted look. $89/each is steep, though.

I was at the US Open in 2009 at Bethpage and came across a shirt m that said it was made from recycled plastic bottles. No way! Had to buy it. Still held up well after 11 years.

Ive got a Columbus Crew soccer jersey that was made from recycled water bottles and its fine.  If I didnt tell you that it was made from water bottles, you wouldnt be able to notice any difference from it to any of my other soccer jerseys.

Id be fine with a polo that was made from recycled polyester.
