Dress Code

Recommended Posts

Golf Clothes for me but I hate tucking in my shirt. I like for it to be free flowing. My dress is usually impeccable minus the untucked shirt.

My father was an avid Golfer and in the 83 years he walked the earth I not once saw him in a pair of shorts of any kind. He would roll over in his grave if he knew I was playing with my shirt tail hanging out ;$

I don't bother tucking my shirt in anymore. It just comes out anyway when playing g golf.

I wear golf shorts and a golf shirt, but the shirt is normally untucked because I have a gut. When @revkev, @fozcycle , @00sportsman and I played Innisbrook last month, I was dressed in my normal golf attire and I had one of the attendants asked my to tuck my shirt in because "we have a dress code here". OK, fair enough.

I agree with the “dress appropriate to the venue” crowd. If you’re playing a high-end course that caters to a certain group, you’ll feel out of place dressed overly casual (not to mention being embarrassed by them correcting you!!). I don’t have any issue with jeans or collarless shirts, either. That’s up to the venue. (Although I might change my shirt opinion should I hear of Tiger being thrown out of a club for wearing a collarless shirt. 😄 ) I am far more concerned about fellow golfer’s behavior and consideration. I’ve followed behind players at high-end courses who look like an ad for Travis Mathews who were loud, obnoxious and refused to repair their own divots. Give me a considerate slob any time!

What kind of peasant plays in jeans 🙄... No but seriously, it can get really hot walking around in jeans. I think if people are going for comfort they should wear shorts. I'm accustomed to slacks and short or long sleeve polos. I throw in a straw hat, Aussie hat, or bucket hat with some shades too. When it gets really warm I'll rock shorts, but that's rare.

Why do we have dress codes anyways?

If I can play good golf with flip flops, jorts, and a mustard stained tank top why do I need to “dress up” to play golf?

With the current events my outlook on life has changed dramatically. Some of us will have a good long time of “quarantine” or whatever. Only a short time on this earth to care what I’m wearing.

First round out will be in Cheetah Print board shorts and a tee shirt... why? Because I can.

*ill probably go back to pants and a polo eventually... maybe.

I was 8 years old when I started caddying with my Grandfather and playing after a couple months. My club was a muni but in 1959 there were rules of the game, dress attire being one of them. Since that time I have always worn a long pants or golf shorts. I did try the mock turtleneck for awhile(2004). After a few months I decided they were not for me. So I went back to golf shirts. I see the pros wearing the Nike version of a mock turtleneck and think they look like s&*t....

As for cargo shorts, gym shorts and jeans, they are not for me. Call me old fashioned, but I just think if you are going to play the game, play by the rules. Attire is part of the rules.

Overall I think a more widely relaxed attitude to dress codes would be a welcome improvement.  We want to make newcomers feel relaxed and welcome, it is behaviour that needs the 'code' not the clothes.

That said, if a club or course has a dress code, then just follow it if you want to play there.  My course has a code, I would prefer it a little less strict though, it just feels a bit much specifying that you can't wear patterned socks when some golf trousers could dazzle anyone from 400 yards, but it is what it is.

The only item of clothing code that should be 'standard' pretty much everywhere is flat shoes IMO, to protect the course and for health and safety reasons.

I try my best to channel the GOAT with Nike golf attire, just something about that red...but after the first hole I usually bring shame to the combo...

Serious question do you agree or disagree with the LPGA dress code changes of a year or so ago. I think it is in violation of the sexy women golfers to dress as they please (within reason of course) but what they were wearing on the course and posing with advertisements was nice, very good for them financially and for the LPGA as many more people watched it then. Why discriminate against natural beauty? None of thse sexy LPGA women outfits were a problem to me and many if not most women and men. IMO very stuffy thing the LPGA did.

I wear jeans in the cooler weather... and sometimes at golf league in the Summer. My work doesn't allow shorts, so I always wear jeans to work. I don't always have time to change clothes before league.

I play in a working mans' league, so it is quite common to see guys dressed in work clothes at league. The course understands this... and it sure isn't going to turn down the money...lol.

With as many chemicals as the put on a course it's also a personal health issue.

Man that is a great question and one that is a lot more complex than meets the eye. I worked an LPGA event just before they addressed the current fashion trends. This was the first time I’d been up close and personal with LPGA players. My first thought was wow! They were beautiful, sexy, athletic and fashion forward. However, their outfits didn’t leave much to the imagination. Bending over to putt or mark a ball revealed much more than what most would consider appropriate.

I remember when spandex was more of a fitness outer garment than it is today. Believe me the last thing I wanted to see was some dude spotting me on the bench wearing spandex with his business in my face. At this particular tournament the women’s dress was just as revealing as that dude in the gym.

The LPGA and it’s corporate sponsors work together to, based on extensive research, market their product, not the individual. While we as individuals may not have a problem with bikini golf market research tells a different story.

I don’t have an issue if the LPGAs business model focuses on the Golf rather than the fashion. Conversely I personally don’t have a problem with the fashion trends that accentuate these incredible athletes.

It is tough because the age old motto "sex sells" rings true in any sport...I.E. cheerleaders, granted the NFL would be a billion dollar business regardless but would cause a stir would it not if cheerleaders were to be covered up?

The LPGA of all women sports I think probably has the biggest following (I have not researched this but just based on opinion) I think these rules are trending more towards the PGA I.E. the PGA requires pants, not that the LPGA needs to follow this just an observation.

It is a tough line to toe these days because on one hand you know sex sells but on the other hand you want respectful viewers not following because Holly Sanders bent over to get her ball out of a cup...Age old question how far is to far?

I think some manufacturers had gone a bit overboard with what they were giving their brand-ambassadors to wear during tournament play.  If the LPGA wants to be a guiding force for young girls everywhere, they can't allow players to wear stuff no school system would allow.  The LPGA really had no choice and it was the right decision in my opinion.

I say this because it was a problem in my household for a short time.  My daughter wanted to wear what she saw her favorite players wearing.  The issue is, the school system requires the length of shorts and skirts to be no shorter than the longest finger with the arms hanging straight down.  LPGA shorts and skirts were several inches shorter than that!  Not to mention, my daughter has a father that wouldn't allow her out of the house dressed that way at the age of 10!

With that said, what high school girls wear for volleyball flies in the face of any school system dress code in america.  How that is allowed is beyond me!

I tend to agree with you, but I can see the why the LPGA doesn't want to looked at as a sexy women show. Some of them are beautiful, no doubt.

I think it's a delicate subject/balancing act for them. I personally never thought any of the women dressed unacceptably on tour. Some got a little ......... "showy" while modeling for products, but I feel that is between them and their sponcers, not the LPGA.

On the other hand, the NBA makes the players dress in business or conservative attire when entering and exiting the arena.  I don't know what the answer is. I guess like everything else.... if want to work/play for a company/entity, it's probably best to follow their rules?

This was discussed ad infinitum on many golf forums when it happened.  As I remember, the concern wasn't as much about the rounds we saw on TV as it was practice rounds, pro-am rounds, and "meet and greet" get togethers with high-rolling sponsors.  The LPGA depends on advertising and sponsorship revenue, largely from big companies run by stuffy old men.  Those stuffy old men aren't as likely to provide millions of dollars in sponsorship money when the athletes violate their sense of decorum.  So the LPGA made an (appropriate) decision to develop a stricter dress code in order to avoid pissing off their sponsors.  I'm a big fan of attractive women in revealing clothing, but there are some times an organization needs to tone down the sex appeal for business reasons.
