I like the style. I have found that "pub caps" (which are different than newspaper boy and standard flat caps) look the best on my noggin.  Wigens is my go to brand.  Wife doesn't like them though.

I was a wool, Irish Flat Cap guy in New England in the Winter.

Worth the $?

I was considering one.

I think so. The quality of construction is really top notch. Normal caps I buy have thin materials in the brim, sweat band, etc. These are made of a much better quality. Thicker materials, and better for absorbing sweat/moisture.

Oh, mostly just for yard work and embarrassing my wife and kids when the neighbors are around.

Good enough reason for me

Here’s a pic of the hat after 18 holes in 92* hear and humidity. My other hats would be soaked with sweat.

Wore my Shelta Seahawk for my Saturday 18. Wish I had gotten serious about sun vs hat a lot sooner; can't undo the damage.

Had to make a June 17 appointment with my dermatologist to get another skin cancer cut off.

Baseball style caps only protect the forehead, not the sides of head/face, ears, neck.

Wide brim hats are almost a must if you’re in the sun a lot. Tops of ear and face seem to catch most damage in FL.

Thats where I grew up: Sarasota and pensacola. Ran around mostly naked a lot of the time. Hated sunscreen.

Now I am paying, like my Mom and her Dad. My brimmed hat and sunscreen are how I roll now.

This thread rocks! I got mild sun sickness after a long round last week (while wearing spf 50 no less). I seem to get zapped once or twice a year and wind up with a pounding headache after the round despite hydrating and wearing spf 50. I was planning on switching from a ball cap to a wide brim style hat as a result, many good recommendations here!

SPF only helps with sun damage to the skin, but not with avoiding heat-related exhaustion or worse. That is a whole body issue. Hat helps, but more look to hydration or to clothing or towels that cool with evaporation. Don’t forget electrolytes when hydration.

I just bought these electrolyte packets called liquid iv from Costco, I'm going to give that a try. The cooling towels are a good tip. I'm trying to be smarter about it.

I'm half considering the rash guard/under armour type fisherman's shirts as well, bit I don't know if that would help or hurt w the heat?

Would be interested to hear your experience with the liquid IV. I've heard of them in use for other sports applications. Summer golf in AZ gets HOT! Electrolyte replacement is crucial.

I've been making my own electrolyte concoction for a while. Played in 112° yesterday and this seemed to keep me mostly balanced. I still have calf and toe cramps though come night time.

1 gallon drinking water
4 T honey
2 T apple cider vinegar
2 T Morton's lite salt (see sodium and potassium)

I've always been just a flat brim cap kinda guy until all this cancer talk! 😱

Seriously though, it's been on my list for a while now to start being a lot safer under the sun. I was, and still am that guy that never wears sunscreen because I don't burn. That's the first thing to change this year. I've been thinking about moving to a bucket hat for a bit more protection. I wanted to try the Greg Norman, but I do not think I can pull that off. 🤣

Here are a couple pics I took yesterday of the Melin hat. These hats are more expensive because of the materials used to make them, and it’s turning-out to be well worth the price!

FYI, they make normal 6 panel caps too. This hat is in the Hydro series that’s built to take sweat, and water. Here’s the link

I pulled the trigger on the Shelta Seahawk (recommended in this thread) my wife is HORRIFIED by how dorky it looks - so I’m pretty sure it’s now my favorite hat.

I chipped around for a few hours in 85* weather and the brim has made a big difference for my pasty skin. I think I’m going to do an unofficial review on it!

If SWMBO doesn’t approve then it’s probably what you want
It looks like it will work great and keep the effects of the sun off your head, ears.

I have bought two of the Magellan long sleeve fisherman shirts at academy. They are 30 spf/upf. They are moisture wicking, so you don’t have a soaking wet shirt during your round. I dont feel hotter in them, but playing in long sleeves took some getting used to.
