HEAVY or LIGHT shafts which and why???

Zen Snake

Recommended Posts

So which is your preference and why. I'm on the Heavy side cause I like to feel the club in my hand and know were its at. Plus it allows me to have that Stiff+ shaft vs an X-Stiff in the driver and woods.

Oh and @downlowkey I looked for this thread and found nothing, LOL

I am more in the middle to low weight group and quite sensitive to weight: I like the feeling of a little heft in the club but too much weight causes the club to be stuck behind me. From that position it is hard for me to release the club and square the face (especially the driver). I get either push/push fades or pulls. I generally err on the side of less weight.

Ive always played heavier shafts better.  Recently made a trade for a 65g Hzrdus green though and am smoking it.  It’s the first sub 70 gr driver shaft I’ve meshed with.

I'm always in the lighter end with shafts. As soon as the weight gets too high, I struggle to be able to swing the club (I have muppet arms) and get inconsistent because I'm trying to force the club too much. I do admit I am of an "unusual" build (6'6" and about 200lbs) and my swing is very smooth in its acceleration.

Put me in the lighter camp: just made the switch from a 75 gram evenflow to a 60 gram Tensei: to me the 60 gram feels “heavier” but that’s due to feeling the club head weight, and not the shaft weight. Makes me feel like the club does whatever my hands tell it to...

Heavier the better for me as well.  I want the club to feel like a baseball bat, because that's what my body knows.  I don't have any problem with swing speed but I could see people that do, would want as light as possible.  I like knowing where the club is in my hand throughout the swing.

I do have a problem with swing speed, but light clubs are not the answer.  I tried a light driver and I was all over the place.  Put a heavier shaft in it and added lead tape to the head, and it's fine.  I just need a new body to swing faster!!

I’ve played 75-125, my tendency is to get too quick in transition and the heavier shafts mellow that out, so I’m playing 120 right now.

My driver shaft is 65g and I might even go a bit lighter. My hybrids are 70g and seem just right for them. Here's a youtube on a lighter shaft fitting that @Jbmullinsent me regarding senior golfers, re: slower SS, Probably doesn't apply to the OP who has a 7.5 index, but it's still interesting.

Irons I tend to go in the 90 to 105g steel neighborhood.   As Ian Fraser told me during my fitting.  It will help slow my tendency to come over the top, not eliminate it, but help reduce it a bit.

In drivers I tend to live in the 55g area for a bit more speed.   I have tried the 49g in my TS1 and it really feels like it's moving through the swing pretty well.  Titleist and Fujikura  did a great job at balancing that shaft and head.

Driver: currently 50gr. I was
Fit into a 50gr shaft during a driver fitting. Tried 60gr and felt launch was a little low so I went back to 50.

3wd: 70 gram. Next weight progression.

Hybrids: 85gr. Selected this over 95gr based on discussions with KBS to help launch the ball higher

Irons: 120gr. Multiple fittings into this shaft. Have tried lighter weight shafts but the 120s help control my tempo a little bit.

I've usually fit into 75G plus due to aggressive transition in downswing and I'm a pretty solid build at 6'1 210.  I'm going to the 6X for the first time with the Ventus so we'll see how that works out.  Prefer at least 120g or more in the irons usually and it's what I'm usually fit into.

Definitely in the heavy camp. The heavier the shaft, the more comfortable I feel. Any shaft under 70 grams I have a bad tendency to miss left.

Have two updates....

I tried a driver at 44.5" with a 100g shaft a week or more ago.  It was not good, my tee game direction was a bit ugly.  Was playing a course that wasn't very penal so I got away with it more than I should have, in scoring terms.

The second update is related to shaft weight.  I decided it was time to quit screwing around and went back to the Fast 12LS that I was hitting pretty well for a few months last year.  And I put the Xcaliber Tour shaft in it, which checks in under 70g.  Very much a departure for me.  44" was the length, so I didnt step outside too far.  😉

And hit it pretty well.  Found fairways, kept the ball in play, with decent distance.  Even got compliments from playing partners, one guy telling me he'd better see that club in my bag next round (this Friday).  My bag rotating nature hasn't gone unnoticed.  LOL

And another update....

The 44" and <70grams didn't last long.  Hit it well for one round, got progressively worse.  I guess I'm not yet at the point in my game where I can go that light with my driver.

I'd been trying my King LTD with a Rogue Black 3w shaft, it worked moderately well, but with what appeared to be too much spin, even at 9* loft.  Headwinds were killing me.  Wasn't sure I could get away with it but figured it was worth a shot, pulled out the Aldila NV ProtoPype 80 that I'd assembled for it some time previously.

Quite a difference.  Ramped up loft to 10.5*, spin came down where I could get through headwinds with a little flighting effort,  and overall distance bumped up.  Felt like I was back to what I'd been seeing a few years ago in terms of distance, and the 80g shaft gave me better feel in the swing, with better lateral dispersion compared to what I'd been seeing.  Relative to my tee game ability, of course, LOL.

Don't have it with me for my holiday weekend golf, but I put the ProtoPype 80 I have in an R11s adapter in my SuperDeep.  I've been dying to give that some run, since seeing test results over at WRX on the SuperDeep's ball speed; it can still hang with anything in ball speed terms.  I missed out on the SuperDeep in its day, kind of like the visually smaller footprint thanks to that face depth.

I'd bet @BIG STU would love the lead tape on this King LTD 😊

Interesting, all the tape I have used was super sticky and i to work to get it to come off. It generally tears into multiple pieces.

If is too hard to et of hit it slightly with the heat gun and I say slightly. To remove tape residue use WD-40 with a sorta rough dish towel

Every time I put lead tape on it just ends up falling off.

you must clean the area you are going to put it with something, mineral spirits etc.  then i warm the lead tape with a fan heater to warm the glue, once its on and set i use knife handle of something the rub along it to really press it on hard.
