Mats or grass. I am feeling good on the mats and then a bit lost over the ball again out on the course...

I need the grass ranges to get going here so I can have more "real" practice.

Huge difference for me. I can be king of the mat at one range and then go to the grass one or the course and stink it up. YMMV, but this seems more and more real for me.

What is your right elbow doing? Left arm for me seems to behave when I slot that right elbow into the body on the down swing...

Right arm has seemed fine, I just used to always break the left arm on the come back, and I seem more accurate like that, but I watch every pro's swing and they keep that left arm straight, so I have been working on that.

Keeping the left elbow straight on the backswing helps keep it straight on the downswing, which is very important to make solid, repeatable contact.

I didn't really think there was a big difference, but after a winter of hitting off the mats I felt like my iron play was weaker when I moved to grass. I'll be looking for an all grass range once the season starts in earnest.

Went and hit a bucket in the 25 mph winds this afternoon and I found that I suck on mats too.

Wind is a rough mistress. Demoed wedges and full swings with the 58 into the wind were almost going behind me...

The wife found that stash before too long. Now I store my emergency funds in my golf shoes. The upside is the wife won't touch my golf shoes with a ten foot pole once they've been "worn in". The downside is the cart girls aren't too appreciative when I dole it out.

With that in mind, we went to the dome less this year. And I think my game is in better shape as a result. Not as hard of a transition at the beginning of the season.

So today I learned what an average to poor game looks like on a very tough course in the wind.

Not a flat fairway in the bunch. Nasty greens with the sadistic pins in some. Shot lots of sixes today one all kinds of holes. Some blind tee shots, some holes that prior course knowledge would have really helped.

Wind here and there that could move the ball the width of the green. beatdown...

 

Here is the hacker shot of the day. Elevated tee par 4. after drive I have about 180 to the green, into the wind. Decide the try and hit a low running 5 iron. Set up and swing, topping the ball. It runs and runs and runs onto the green. Two putt for the only par of the round. The true hacker moment came when I looked at the club when I put it back in the bag and it was the 7 iron, not the 5. Both sit on the same side and I grabbed the wrong one.

Did laugh though now that the knock down 7 iron for 180 yards is now in the bag.
