clothing for cold weather

What are your recommendations on lightweight non-restrictive and warm clothing - keeping in mind a reasonable budget.  Springs and falls up here start off pretty cool so I like ot layer a few lighter weight things but it always feels restricting.  What are some good recommendations?

I wear the UA Cold Gear mock quite a bit.  Had that and about 4 other layers on Saturday including a knit hat and mitts - it was in the low 40's and windy to start.  Felt sorry enough for the cart girl that I bought a couple things to tip her even though I didn't really need them.

I stay pretty warm in the 30's  - it's know as sitting in front of a warm fire

Love the Duluth stuff.  There is a Duluth Trading Post 25 minutes from here.  I have a number of shirts and jeans. Haven't tried the fleeces but usually looking for some wind proofing so maybe with a light wind jack on top.  ALthough we have finally made it into summer I hope.  Was 80 last weekend.  Woo hoo!

Also been getting my kids for Christmas some quality clothing that will last .  I don't know how much they really appreciate it now but in 15 years when it is still a favorite they'll know.

The biggest challenge for me is teeing off when it's high 40's/low 50s, but 2 hours later it will be in the 60s and climbing.  I like to get to the course early enough for a solid warm-up, but that means a UA Coldgear mock, then a polo, then a fleece, but I'll roast in that once it warms up, and I hate stripping down to get that mock off and put the polo back on.

I have too many UA cold gear shirts to count; some pullover, some half zip. I also have Nike & Puma sweaters for those mornings@Getoffmylawn mentioned: I save the the long sleeve under the polo for days when I’ll want it on the whole round and go with a sweater when it’ll be too hot halfway thru.

You could find a nice and affordable Under Armour on Amazon or eBay; you have to only pay attention to what you're ordering (read on description and see the consistency). Of course, there are some risks when you're blindly ordering from e-commerce platforms, but that's the price you have to pay if you're looking for cheap items. Many people say I'm uncanny because I usually wear formal suits like these https://www.gentlemansguru.com/. However, I can't do anything with it because I appreciate style more than comfort. Sounds stupid? Maybe.

Temperature dictates the type and number of layers I wear.  This time of year I don't go with too many layers as morning temps start out in high 30's, low 40's but get's to 60's by noon.  I hate bulky layers, so I wear layers that I can peel off easily:  
base layer (maybe), golf shirt, thin merino wool sweater, wind vest, maybe a light wind breaker jacket if wind is unusually high.  I love my Nike Bandon Dunes waterproof golf boots for keeping my feet warm, even if it's not wet.  However, I heard Nike doesn't make them anymore so I will have to start looking for a replacement.

For me in cold weather is always my hands. I can put on enough layers play, wear something on my ears, and put heating pads on my socks.  That said, my hand tend to really hurt when it gets below freezing.

Agree 100%.  Have something windproof, on the outside, and walk.  Walking will pretty quickly allow to shed a couple layers that may be needed to stay warm just standing around waiting to tee off, or combating the wind chill of the moving cart.

Even though I currently live in Key West, Florida I spent most my life living in Rochester, NY.  I can't tell you how many times I played golf in the cold temperatures and snow.  I've always had good luck with Zero Restriction Wind Stopper products.  They have light weight jackets (like the M3) as well as heavier fleece for cold weather.  The integrated Gortex lining does a great job limiting any wind through their products.  I especially like the folds in the back that prevent the jackets from interfering with your swing and the integrated cuffs which limit cold air entering through your wrists.  They can be pricy new, but I've had great luck picking up slightly used Zero Restriction jackets on eBay for very reasonable prices.

I go with a warm base layer that has some merino wool in it. Then I add a golf shirt and the just wear a wind proof layer on top of that and that usually works well. If it is really cold I add a mid layer as well. Just something a bit thicker like a pull over sweater.  Keeps me warm right down to the freezing mark.
 

Wear a toque as well (I think in the US you refer to it as a beanie). You will be surprised how much this helps in keeping you warm.

I was a long distance runner when young and always ran through the winter so I have a lot of experience here. There are a few basic principles: a wicking layer close to the body. Ski gear from LL Bean (mid weight is my choice for golf). Then a heavy layer, a solid fleece pullover. Top it off with a vest, maybe down if it’s real cold, or a windbreaker (even something light), or both if you ride in a cart on a day with real windchill. My usual group and I are crazy enough to do that.

It starts with base layers, either 32 degree's from Costco, or, Uniqlo Heattech. Wool is great for baselayers, too, but, can be much more expensive. Basically, avoid cotton, which, can retain moisture, and, make you colder.

Midlayer is heat regulation. Lightweight fleece or midweight fleece pullovers work for me depending on the temperature. A vest could be enough depending on the weather conditions.

Outer layer helps to hold heat in. Wind and rain protection. I live in the PNW, so, water proof is a must have, but, I usually carry a lightweight wind breaker, if it starts to get too warm.
