My eyes are definitely directly over the ball. Easier to line up the putter that way.

Wrong. I do putt with my eyes over the ball and with a slightly open stance. I'm a good putter. I also pay play regularly with a friend who has a most unusual putting style - eyes everywhere but over the ball. I don't even like watching him setup and such. But... he's a great putter.

Like most of us know.... nothing matters except that split-second moment of truth with each stroke and with any club.

I’ve been practicing keeping my eyes inside, above the heel of the putter. I may need to flatten my putter a tad.

I putt with my eyes just inside the ball.  I used to find that when I stood with my eyes directly over the ball that I would pull all of my putts.  Supposedly, when you stand with your eyes over the ball and then turn your head to look at the hole, it makes you think that the hole is more to the left than it really is.

It is called Parallax error and could cause the hole to look more left or right.   By adjusting your setup,  you can work to make your eyes see the line correctly.

This is exactly correct.  Eyes over ball does not necessarily mean you will be lining up properly.  Watch the txg putter fitting video with Gareth Raflewski.    Mat actually saw the line better when he was slightly inside.

A while back I saw a video that Seemore did about that.  To be fair, there was a time when I stood with my eyes over the ball because thats what used to be taught.  It was believed that by having your eyes over the ball, you could use your mind to draw a line from the ball to the hole.  The only problem is that unless you stand directly over the ball and your sightlight is at a 90 degree angle to the ground, when you turn your head to look at the hole, you cant draw a straight line from the ball to the hole.  It makes sense when you think about it.

I saw an episode of Playing Lessons With The Pros with Rory a while back where he showed that he trains with a putting mirror in order to ensure that he is just inside the ball.

Over the ball for me, looking at a dimple at the edge of the ball closest to my putter.

After you set up to the ball, do you all look at the cup again? I read the line from the cup back to my putter to make sure it's what I want after I set up.

... Actually quite a few great putters have their eyes inside the ball, especially those with a gate stroke. Putting is the strongest part of my game and the main reason I play to a + index and my eyes are about 2" inside the ball. I have a pretty heavy gate stroke so I cannot see the line with my eyes over the ball. Everyone is different of course and more will putt better with their eyes directly over the ball, but when I gave a free short game lesson with a 5 lesson package, I found about 25% putted better with their eyes inside the ball. And for those that do putt better with their eyes inside the ball it is a real eye opener, if you will excuse the bad pun. They instantly started putting better. Imo Feel Putters do better with their eyes inside and technical putters do better with their eyes one the ball. Obviously not a hard and fast rule but something I found to be more true than not.

... I think the interesting part is every putt is a straight putt and every stroke should be the same no matter how straight or how much break, with the only variance being length of stroke. The only difference in a normal putting stroke is better putters will often hit the ball on the toe on very fast downhill putts. But so many poor putters will try and" putt the break" like pushing a right to left and pulling a left to right putt. So it isn't the stroke as much as it is the read, then trusting that read and your stroke.

After I set up to the ball lining up my putter to the line on the ball, I look at the hole and putt.  No reason to look back at the ball... I'm already set up.

There is no one-size-fits-all in golf. Get some lessons, get a fitting, or experiment until you find something that works, but at the end of the day - just do what works best for you.

I prefer my dominant eye (left) to be slightly behind the ball when I putt because I get a better feel of the line I am putting on.  This perception allows me to putt through the target line a lot easier for me.

Putting has been the best part of my game for about 3 or 4 years now.  It's the part I work on the most, so no coincidence there 🙂   I was fit by the Tour fitter at PING last year, my eyes were slightly inside the ball, and he was fine with that, as I appeared to see the line very well.  He was mostly concerned with getting the correct loft and life and proper toe hang for my stroke.   We ended up with the Tyne 4, which was very similar to the Scotty Cameron #7 I had been using for 3 years.

coincidentally I as in a major retailer during the summer messing around with putters, when he fitter there offered to give me a free fitting.  He put me on their machine that took video's from in front and above you.  He focused solely on me getting my eyes over the ball, saying "that was the essential" to  being a good putter.   He did the old drop a ball from your eye test as well.  I indulged him for a few moments and then politely moved on.

Hard for me to say if it really changes on the course or not,  but when I setup using my Eyeline putting mirror I've noticed that my eyes are actually outside of the ball. I never feel quite comfortable with my setup when using the mirror so I suppose it's possible that my eyes are normally more over it, but having my eyes on the inside of the ball definitely feels weird.

Funny enough, I used to game 34" & 35" putters and routinely miss right. When I switched to a 33" putter to feel like I was more over the ball, I started finding the cup more. Like I said above, do what works for you.
