Bag Boy Chiller Cart Bag - Official MGS Forum Review by Wedgie

Whoever designed this golf bag at Bag Boy is someone I want to play 18 with.  Sure, I’ve had other bags with “coolers” in them but not like the Bag Boy Chiller cooler.  A cooler that also carries golf clubs…why didn’t I think of that?

IMG_1129.JPG.e80b3e5910c6bc24761034cef668c31e.JPG

With the craziness that is 2020 I’ve gone from traveling two weeks a month to not traveling at all.  I’ve learned to appreciate a more relaxed lifestyle and golf has become fun again as I’ve taken that relaxed approach to the course.  I recently switched to single length irons and they are slowly starting to come around for me.  My index is dropping from where I started the year and currently sits at 9.4.  I no longer sweat the bad shots, I no longer worry about shot tracking, and although I putt better with my 34” Evnroll putter I use a 35” Pinseeker more often because I don’t have to bend over as much to use it.

I play the majority of my rounds in Rhode Island at my club and we get some hot and muggy days.  My normal set up is 14 clubs, a Clicgear Model 8 and a Yeti.  With Covid-19 rules in place and no water coolers on the course the cooler has been awesome to have.

When the bag first arrived I took it out of the box and it looked awesome.  I was using a Datrek DG Lite II prior to the Bag Boy and they are very similar in appearance but don’t all bags kind of look the same?  I noticed a few extra pockets which provided more storage than I actually need.  The bag seemed larger than the Datrek but also seemed lighter.  A quick fact check showed the Datrek is about 2 pounds lighter but I’m a cart pusher so weight isn’t a huge issue for me.  The outer packaging clearly stated “Made in China” which was a bit of a turn off but I get it.

Looks (10 out 0f 10)

The black bag with green accents really pop to me and they match our company colors.  I am seeing more of that color scheme in everyday products and more and more at my club with other guy’s bags.  Bag Boy offers 6 color options and I think all testers chose a different color which shows me there is a color for everyone.  The slim accents really give the bag a sleek look and they don’t shout BAG BOY with over-sized graphics which I’m not a fan of.  The cooler is hidden perfectly so I can sneak beers on the course and the beer cart girl is none the wiser.

IMG_1128.JPG.40039792527cdda1caa87c032f42e529.JPG

Size and Weight (8 out of 10)

To me the size is perfect and if I didn’t compare the weight to the Datrek I’d say the weight is perfect.  Two extra pounds in a cart bag is nothing.  If I was lugging the clubs on my back for 18 holes I’m sure the 2 extra pounds would make a difference but that is not what the bag is designed for.

Club Storage (9 out of 10)

The Chiller bag has 14 individual full length club dividers.  The Datrek had 15 and having an extra slot always messed me up for some reason.  Remember, I’m trying to simplify my life and having one less slot does just that.  I noticed fraying on the Datrek fairly quickly on the top of the dividers because the fabric only goes down about two inches.  No problems yet on the Bag Boy but it’s something I will keep my eye on.  I have not had a single issue with any clubs getting hung up in the bag or pulling a club only to find a 12” piece of thread tangling from my grips which has been an issue in the past with other bags.  I have noticed my putter will get hung up slightly when the cooler is full with 6 beers since the cooler is stored against the soft sided putter well.  Drink a beer and that solves the problem.

IMG_1183.JPG.0f0d1baaa643f43961f0c4b41990322a.JPG

Other Storage (8 out of 10)

This bag really has more room than I need with 9 zippered pockets, 3 mesh quick-access pockets and the removable cooler.  It provides a ton more storage than the Datrek and even though I don’t need it all I have found it to be much more desirable to have than I thought it would be.  I really wish the fleece lined and one of the accessory pockets were a little deeper.  If so this bag would be a 10 for me in regards to storage.  Since they are so shallow I have found myself putting things like keys, my wallet, glasses case and things like that in the pocket I keep my laser range finder.

IMG_1181.JPG.8d5d9fbf1d3e9dccd51e0f36dc116b8e.JPG

Extra Features (10 out of 10)

The cooler is awesome!  I’ve owned bags that have a silver lined pocket with a spout at the bottom to let the water drain when the ice melted which lead to a soggy, stinky bag.  They call that a cooler? The cooler bag really is a cooler.  It is removable and I could see myself taking it to the beach with a few drinks and some snacks.  It will hold six 12 ounce cans but it is a tight squeeze.  I have found that the best set up for keeping drinks cold is to go with 5 cans and fill the rest with ice.  With 6 cans there is no extra room for an ice pack or even loose ice.  Once the drinks are gone just dump the ice and leave it unzipped to air dry in the bag.  Without ice the drinks tended to stay cool but less than ideal temperature especially for beer.

Another nice touch is the easy grip zipper pulls.  Doesn’t seem like a big deal but when you have a hot, steamy day it makes unzipping pockets a breeze.

IMG_1133.JPG.e0cee00ad7b0f818f4add5fef2d2184f.JPG

Durability (10 out of 10)

This is a tough one to rate so early but so far so good.  No fading, no loose threading or fabric coming up where you pull the clubs.  My son is seeing a ton of this on his Cleveland bag after about a year of use. I will continue to add to the thread regarding this topic as warranted.

IMG_1165.JPG.dcef2dd6d26f0ce713ddabd5c6057c87.JPG

On-course (17 out of 20)

For me, as a walker this is a perfect 20 out of 20.  Everything I need is easily accessible since I have 270 degrees of access to the bag.  The bag is easy to handle in and out of the car and will stand on its own without legs as I set up my push cart.  I would not recommend this as a carry bag.  When I do have to carry the bag any distance the single strap is not very comfortable and tended to tilt forward on me which could lead to clubs sliding out.  Hasn’t happened yet but I can see how it easily could.

When I have used with a cart things become a bit trickier with this bag.  The single towel ring if you are the driver gets stuck next to the passenger’s bag and makes it difficult to get to the towel.  I also used a club cleaner that has also turned into a ball washer that attaches to the towel ring.  It does not have a long lanyard and it needs to be removed for use when using a cart.  By adding an additional ring I would have scored this bag higher for on course use.

IMG_1177.JPG.bf42f83839db3bf2a78982654a6fba7c.JPG

Miscellaneous (9 out of 10)

Although this bag has the TOP-LOCK technology for use with a Bag Boy push cart it works really well with my Clicgear cart.  The top locks must rest on top of the bag holder and even though the bag does not touch the bottom of the cart it’s held securely in place with zero movement throughout the round.  The umbrella holder works like any other and the pen and divot tool holders are a tight squeeze so I don’t use them.

IMG_1173.JPG.0ba87134a4d7b4fbaccf0ed1853c7d53.JPG

Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20)

If I ever get rid of this bag it will be because I purchased another one of these.  As a walker it is perfect and gives me more than I thought you could get in a bag.  If I was a cart guy I would strongly consider this bag but I would look at other options based only on the lack of 2 towel rings.  May seem shallow but it makes more of a difference than I would have thought.

Conclusion

I love this bag!  For me it is the perfect blend of great style and functionality.  The cooler is awesome and nobody to my knowledge has anything remotely close to this.  If you are a walker and in the market for a bag you should take a very hard look at this bag as it will be hard to beat.  If a cart is your choice it is still worth strong consideration.

Final Score 91

Bag Boy Chiller cart bag review – Official MGS Forum Review by Elson Correa July 11th of 2020

I am very excited in participating in one of the MGS member reviews, I truly appreciate the opportunity as I myself enjoy reading the experiences of other forum members that had the opportunity to provide invaluable day to day feedback.

I was born and raised in Brazil, just about 40 years ago.

I never had a golf club in my hands until I was in my early 30s.

I started golfing in 2010, I am still a high handicapper, I hold an 18 handicap currently.

I live in southeast Michigan where I golf, due to weather the golf season can be very limited.

For the last few seasons, I golf in a league and weekend play, I play between 40 and 50 rounds a year.

I currently have a Titleist 5 Way stand bag, I picked it due to the fact it is very light weight with a decent amount of storage space. These features are particularly important to me.

First Impressions

20200515_145310.thumb.jpg.26d22830f5eaa5c93be928b4ff17657e.jpg

My first impression of this bag is that it was well made.

I could not locate any areas of poor workmanship in the seams and general construction.20200517_171808.thumb.jpg.b4f3cf85706fc49bcb20e494dbe566ba.jpg I really like the color scheme; it matches my putter cover colors.

The full-length dividers are awesome and something I have not ever had in a bag, some of the club slots are big enough to have more than one club in them.

This bag is much lighter than I expected it to be.

The insulated cooler bag is a great addition, it is made for 6 - 12oz cans, I wish it had a little more wiggle room because I play many rounds in the morning, where I like to carry water bottles and sports drinks.

From all the features that this bag offers, initially my favorite is the IGOTCHA® ball retriever sleeve.

I am hoping to use this bag the rest of the season, for both weekend and league play, mostly for walking with the pushcart, with the occasional cart ride in the hottest days of the summer. The
single strap is probably not ideal for just carrying it.

Looks (10 out of 10 points)

The color scheme is very well set, the navy with the red details really stand out, I love that the company name is not overwhelming and do not take the entire side of the bag.

Size and Weight (4 out of 5 points)

The bag is very light, and the dimensions feel very manageable, even with a compact car, the bag fits comfortably in the trunk.

The bag is listed as 6.4lbs, a little heavier than my current bag that is 4.8lbs.

It felt very comfortable to carry from the car to the clubhouse, I intentionally had a few extras, shag balls, shoes, rain gear and umbrella in it to see how heavy it would feel.

Club Storage (1020200515_150050.thumb.jpg.a55a5dd69018a459a58f922ffff3bff8.jpg out of 10 points)

The 14 way divider is amazing, I use standard size grips as well as a ping pistol size grip for the putter and it feels very comfortable, I believe the club slots are big enough to carry more than one club in them, I had two wedges in one of the slots most of the round that I played and one never got in the way of pulling the other out.

Other Storage (10 out of 10 points)

20200517_145427.thumb.jpg.9c226b5187db3ceea1230413b1eb477c.jpg

With 9 zippered pockets, there is plenty of storage.

I first thought that the zipper on the garment pockets would be a problem when riding the cart, so far as a single rider they are easy to be accessed.

20200515_151000.jpg.ee6c93a21946949061751b32d757ed88.jpg

Even with all my gear and extras the bag never felt overstuffed and there were no issues with open or closing the zippers.

The towel loop is solid, and I easily get my towel in and out, but I was not afraid of loosing the towel as in some over-sized towel loops.

I am very pleased with the umbrella holder, although the design is very similar to other bags in the market, the draw string holder is much stronger and I have had no movement of the umbrella after putting in place.20200517_145902.thumb.jpg.227c234a07f677456b315c5140a5b937.jpg

Extra Features (10 out of 10 points)

The main feature of this bag is the cooler pocket, as previously mentioned I would prefer a cooler with a little more wiggle room for things such as water or sports drinks, I was able to fit although very tight, 4 bottles of 20oz sport drinks, they stayed very cold throughout the entire round, and the one I forgot to take out after the round was still cold after 24 hours.

Durability (10 out of 10 points)

Initially I have no reservations about this bag lasting for the next few seasons, the construction is solid, and the materials feel of very good quality.

On-Course (17 out of 20 points)

The bag is very light and easy to transport around, I do not believe it to be ideal for carrying, as the single strap would
20200517_172037.thumb.jpg.8f084c6c46d10599ad6b288d095c3714.jpg put a lot of strain on the shoulders for a full round.

It stays in place during the round with no issues.

As for the usage with the pushcart, the TOP-LOK® Technology is not compatible with other manufacturers, the bag was moving around a little bit when it was in the pushcart, but I still felt confident in using it.

Maybe it is a business opportunity for Bag Boy to develop and sell adapters that would allow this system to be adapted to other pushcart from different manufacturers, the problem here is the fact that the bag kept moving and rotating, as the tabs for the TOP-LOK would not stay in place, I actually called them to check if they offer any thing that I could do to better settle that bag in place, unfortunately there is nothing they can offer that will help that bag work better with other manufacturer carts, as it was design to match with their own line, in the other hand there is no easy way to remove the the TOP-LOK tabs as they are riveted in place, as well as, they do not expect to have any new cart availability until September, so reverting to my using what was available to me, I went and got a couple of rubber straps with steel hooks from the hardware store to help keep the bag in place.

Miscellaneous (5 out of 5 points)

I am very pleased on how it arrived, the box it came in was sturdy and even without extra wrapping or packaging inside it felt safe for the bag.

I got plenty of complements on the new bag, the colors pop with the sun light and everyone seemed to be pleased with the aesthetics of the bag.

Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20 points)

Definitely is a “Play it” bag, the minor flaws would not keep me from taking it to a course with me, except if I am just playing in a 3 club tournament. This bag is designed for the weekend golfer who wants to go out with some friends and have a few cold ones.

Conclusion

After spending the past few weeks exclusively using this bag, both walking with the push cart and riding, I have to say that I really enjoy having this bag at my disposal.

The overall design and quality of this bag have absolutely surprised me, I had never tried a Bag Boy product before and from the looks to the practicality of this bag have made me very happy. It really checks all the boxes for me if I was looking to get a new cart bag to replace my current carry bag. This bag will be rotated with my current bag to when, I am exclusively walking and carrying my bag.

Final Score: (96 out of 100 points)

Semi End of Season Update, Oct 20th of 2020

After spending the past 3 months rotating between this bag and the Titleist bag, I have concluded that the Bag boy is still performing really well, I have rotated the bag every couple of weeks so I could compare as close as possible with the course conditions, however I have used the cooler in every round I have played this year so far.

The cooler has been perfect as most rounds I am taking 2 bottles of water and 2 bottles of sports drinks with me to the course, I usually freeze one of each, my drinks stay cold for the entire round even on the days where the temps were over 90 with a blistering sun and high humidity.

I have played 20 rounds since I received the bag, 10 with each bag, the two bags I rotate are vastly different, however perform well, with no clear advantage for either bag, except that the bag boy has more storage than the Titleist, a big factor if I am going to play in a day when the weather is a little dodgy and I might need some rain gear with me.

I still love this bag and despite my 12-year-old son attempting to claim as his, it is still my bag and we rotate when we go playing together.

And the bag still looks great after this past couple of months, no damage aside from the minor scuffs from going in and out of the trunk as well as the push cart and golf carts.

O.K. Folks, here is a brief introduction of myself for all checking out this thread. I am a 72 y/o retiree (12 years and counting) who normally plays golf 3 times per week as the weather permits. I had some fairly serious back surgery a couple of years back so I am a very short knocker now but my game is still fairly decent. Here in central Georgia we are able to play year round and I play in two senior groups that play different course each month. All of the groups I play with allow all of us over 70 guys to play from the women's tees, so that helps me continue to be somewhat competitive.

My current golf bag is a Bag Boy Chiller Cart Bag and as Rickp said after seeing a picture of it, “The old bag looks like it’s got 150,000 miles on it “ LOL, it is 4 years old and if you do the math on my rounds per year, I play between 100 and 150 rounds a year, so that old bag has between 400 and 600 rounds. I have a tonneau cover on my truck bed so my bag stays in the back and rides every mile I do. I know I shouldn't leave my bag in the truck but I have a garage and that is where it spends the vast majority of time so I really don't think it hurts my bag and club's.

I currently play mostly Callaway clubs that you can check out in my sig but most importantly all of my clubs have oversized grips, my woods and irons have Lamkin TS1 midsize grips and my putter grip is a SuperStroke 2.0 so we'll see if there is plenty of room in this bag as I am putting in and pulling out my clubs. In my bag I normally carry snacks, around a dozen balls, tees, sunscreen, rain gloves and bucket hat, rain hood, a couple of small bags with extra divot tools, batteries for my rangefinder, tape, Tylenol, insect repellant, extra towels and other assorted items. Needless to say at 72 and having had the back surgery I always ride when I play.

My first impression of this bag was what a beautiful bag when I compared it to my old bag, I immediately noticed that the putter well is much larger and there are only 14 slots now instead of the 15 in my old bag. Everything else except for the Top Lock Technology seems pretty much the same. I loved that I was able to transfer everything directly over to the new bag and know where everything is stored.

Here are some of the things that are important to me.  First, I do play several courses that do not allow personal coolers with you on the course so the cooler pocket is the big feature and it is great. I am a non drinker of alcohol so I drink plenty of water when I play, especially here in Georgia in the late spring, summer and early fall.  My routine is to freeze one bottle of water and put it in the bag first, then 3 bottles of water and I begin drinking a bottle of water or a Propel on the way to the course, that will usually last through the first few holes.  So having 4 more drinks for the rest of the round is enough to get me through even on the hottest of days.  The last drink with the frozen ice will melt enough to give me more drink but after drinking 4 waters already I am hydrated and really am just trying to stay cool at that point.  All of the waters are cold the entire round with this method.

Secondly I like a bag with an individual divider system and that system to be full length, this bag has it.   As I stated earlier I am coming from a BB Chiller Bag that I bought in 2016.  Only here within the past 2 months have I had a club handle grab a club, and that's only been a couple of times.  My clubs have midsize grips and my putter has a Super Stroke 2.0 grip so I have gone 4 years on my old bag with essentially no problems, I am hoping this bag is as durable. So far it seems that it is going to be.

Thirdly I like to have lots and lots of space in my bag for essentials and goodies, I have everything I need for a round and then more room should I decide to carry something else.  I have large items and small, some of them are umbrella, ball retriever, sunscreen, insect repellant, Short Sleeved rain jacket, bucket hat, rain gloves, Tylenol, tape, nail clippers, balls, tees, ball markers, extra pencils, chiller towel, extra towels & lots of snacks.

Fourth I like lots of rings to hang my towels, ditty bags, brush, my rangefinder and my GPS. This bag has that on the right hand side as you look at the bag and has nothing on the left side of the bag at all.  I solved that problem when I found this  https://snaphookzgolf.com/  I have had it on my old bag for most of the 4 years I have had it and I have never had a problem with it.  It solves my needing more rings to hang things and blends well with the Chiller Bag.  I have ordered a new one for my test bag as I am currently using the old one and it has faded and looks bad on this beautiful bag.

Fifth while I do like the larger putter well, I personally preferred the 15 way top of the old bag to the 14 way of the new. I like to keep alignment sticks and a G Force 7 iron in my bag for pre-round warm up.

Sixth, Zen Snake asked a great question about the bag stability when riding alone. I had opportunity to ride as a single and I strapped my bag in without using the passenger strap to tighten the bag in to help prevent flopping around, I was very impressed to find that it seems the cart strap will hold this bag as well as anyone could expect.

Seventh, Lacassem asked How is the rubber sole holding up on the bottom. After comparison pictures with my old bag I believe the bottom will easily outlast the bag.

A nice touch that was not in my previous bag is the ball retriever sleeve, I have a very short (6 feet when extended) retriever and it fits perfectly in the provided space.

Grading

Looks - 9.5

I love the red and black combo of my bag but there are 6 combinations for golfers to choose, there should be something for everyone. The graphics are subtle and the overall look is pretty classic.

Size & Weight – 9.5

You would be hard pressed to find a bag with this much storage that is appreciably lighter. I have storage space to spare.

Club Storage – 9

As stated above I prefer the 15 way top to the 14 way but again that is a personal thing and no biggie.  I have no problem with my oversize grips hanging in the slots.

Other Storage – 9.5

The only people who might need to carry more that this bag will carry would be the pros, they have to be ready for any thing and everything. As an average Joe I feel that I have all I need.

Extra Features – 9.5

The chiller pocket alone would earn this rating but the ball retriever sleeve & Top Lock features take it to the top.

Durability – 9.5

This is based on how well my current bag is holding up and how well my previous Chiller bag has held up.

On- Course – 18.5

As a cart bag this one would be hard to beat, plenty of storage, large full divider slots, cooler pocket, rugged construction. I am impressed!

Miscellaneous – 4

The only change that I think most golfers would want is a towel ring on both sides of the bag, that is big to most golfers that I know.

Play It or Trade It – 10

Play it!!!

Conclusion

This is my second Bag Boy Chiller bag and I don't believe it will be my last. It has storage, room, durability, looks and light weight to carry from the car to the clubhouse. I have thoroughly enjoyed this testing and thank both MSG and Bag Boy for the opportunity.

Final Score – 94 out of 100

This is my old bag compared to my new Bag Boy Chiller Bag

Bagboy1.jpg.ddafb6ac0816857bb5ad4de20bbfc2b0.jpg

Here are views of the bottom of a 4 year old vs a nearly new Bag Boy Chiller.

bb7.jpg.58ef6e494e4c5b7d348bf96b5237ecf8.jpgbb8.jpg.bed0ae57b12bf72bd3a9ee22ed423aef.jpgbb9.jpg.eab5390ed7fa30d5e96f25c99604a8bb.jpg

Views of the cart in use on the course, there is very little turning of the bag during the round.  The first is how I normally ride when alone with the strap hooked through the other strap to keep my bag from turning, the second and third are how well it rode without the strap, thanks for the great question Zen Snake.

bb2.jpg.37283710d0b6e4f974d949d82f8439b1.jpgbb5.jpg.8456205e0c3ca73b4948707dcb04305e.jpgbb4.jpg.ea5bb164cc2576503112dbb924af3744.jpg

I load 2 bottles horizontally and then the last two vertically as shown below, that allows me to slip a snack or two down in the bag to keep it chilled too.  Some of my snacks have a small bit of chocolate in this and this really helps.  The second photo is how well the bag closes loaded this way.

image.png.d34a23e83e09b93e9f9a1d2b2e5604f0.png

These photos show the first bottle out for the day (held by none other than ole gray, sorry about cutting off your head buddy) the second shows the second bottle of the day which was the same temp for the 3rd bottle.  The 3rd picture is the temp of my frozen water post round.  Pretty good on a day the temps went from 87° to 92° during our round.

image.png.cfa160c0be0fafb92f78030a35acb889.pngimage.png.52e7215ed09fc0c56a148da56505ef2e.png

image.png.2de447888819fca9c6e0f2b808aeeef0.png

The first photo shows the new Snap-Hookz on the bag, it is a great addition and I highly recommend it to anyone needing more rings on their bag.  The second shows the Top-Lock Technology and how it does protect the bag some even for we dedicated cart riders, and finally the third shows the roominess of this great bag.

This is pretty cool can’t wait to see who can keep a cold one coldest the longest, Gatorade, La Croix, or the other adult styles.

If it only holds a six I’ll slow down to see how long the drinks stay cold.

Promotional materials suggest 6 12oz cans in the cart bag.

Looking forward to seeing who the geometry wizard of this group is. Or what combinations you guys can fit in there.
