Show us your Maltby!!!

Chances are that if you clicked on this thread you either currently play, have played, have heard of, or maybe even accidentally stumbled upon someone here talking about Maltby clubs. If you're like me and currently play Maltby clubs (DBM's) you're always interested in what Maltby's got going on. the 1 (probably only) downside that Maltby has is that it doesn't have much of a DTC "program" like other DTC brands have. Like a "Play it, send it back" sort of thing. If you're brand new to Maltby, how do you get to know more about them? They're really just falling back on WOM and return happy campers. So during a time like this, I figured what better way to create some good buzz for Maltby and get more business/eyeballs looking their way. Additionally, a lot of us have expressed our intrigue to see MGS get their hands on some Maltby sticks and do some testing. Whether it be MGS or the Forum Testing, it would be really cool to see. Maybe something like this would just be a nudge in the right direction to get both MGS and Maltby to connect😋

I figured I'd start a thread that just covers all things Maltby to better localize all of the scattered Maltby-related threads (it may or may not work). Show us your clubs, tell us about your Maltby builds, from sets to individual clubs. What components did you use? Feel free to throw in details like your handicap, comparison with OEM's, Cost, etc, etc.

I'll get this kicked off: Currently a 10 hdcp. Play Maltby DBM's with Nippon N.S. Pro GH 950 Shafts and Pure Pro Grips. I've compared these to pretty much every CB style on the market and the only thing that I'm still in debate about being better is my other set -  Wilson Staff FG Tour F5's. I guess you could say that I'm in a polyamorous relationship with both. Neither seem to mind as long as I divide my time evenly. They both give me back what I need so everybody's happy. If I Recall, I paid somewhere in the ball park of $350 to have these built, bent, and shipped.

I love me some Maltby! I built my DBM's a few years ago and only laid them down when I got the Bridgestones. However, I'm still gaming the 4 and 5 hybrids.

I have built clubs in the past (Golfsmith) and would have no reservations about building Maltby clubs. Seriously looked at building his premium driver a few years ago but came across the Cobra head I now play for a price I could not refuse.

I too play a Cobra driver that if I didn't get such a sweet deal on, I might be swinging a Maltby. The newer Maltby KE4 Tour TC driver seems to be a top notch product. @Popeye64 has had nothing but fantastic things to say about it.

I've got a TSW 56/12 wedge showing up Saturday that I'll be putting together. (pics to come)

I really want to order the KE4 Tour TC 3 wood but right now I'm kinda sorta grounded from buying any more equipment.. 😪

New phone and didn't transfer my pics or I would post up my current setup.
KE4 TC driver. Xcaliber PRO TSL TS driver shaft set at 9.5°

KE4 TC 4 fw. Paderson Kinetixx S shaft.

PTM Black 4-GW Xcaliber Rapid Taper 75g shafts

M+ 52 tour sole, 56 mid sole wedges. Xcaliber Pro 85g shafts

Moment Tour XI putter.

First time in a long time a full Maltby bag.
The KE4 TC Driver head can be put up against any OEM head on the market and not only match but beat the best names. I have posted data to prove it.
The PTM irons are a fantastic no nonsense players GI iron. PTM 4 iron is so good it booted a very good and reliable hybrid right into the workshop. Amazing consistency and feel. No gimmicks, just a great forged head. It's an iron that let's you build confidence yet pull off any type of shot.
M+ wedges speak for themselves. And at $33 a head its the best deal in golf.
The Maltby line up has never been better. I routinely hit a lot of the new gear available from just about all companies and have yet to have an OEM product in recent years want me to change. I back up all of my testing with data and on the course.
You can spend three times the cost of my entire bag with ease but you won't beat the performance.
I have gamed some sort of Maltby gear for at least 15 years now.

So to my complete surprise, I got a little something in the mail today.. I clocked out for lunch and went and built me a golf club.

Right now it's glued up. I'll finish the ferrule edge later.

To be completely honest, I was expecting the face to have the microgrooves that most of the newer wedges have. The write up states "micro grooves" but I guess it's referring to more large grooves placed closer together. Reading around, I'm not seeing that the super fine micro grooves make all that much difference so I'm not bummed out in the slightest.

Should be all cured up to play tomorrow!

Thats a great looking club!! The Maltby micro groves and more grooves with less volume. So in theory there is more biting the ball. They work as they should.

But I gotta say that wedge looks great.

Great looking wedge!  My only complaint would be why the short little groove on the top of the face and no groove at the very bottom of the face.  That's where I need it.  Our turf is firm and I don't dig, so I hit many balls off the very bottom of the club face.  Other than that I would consider it.  I built a set of Maltby irons a year or two after I started playing just to learn about clubs.  Fun experience!!  I still have them, but they are 25 years old.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Looks nice! How much of a rocker sole is there on the TSWs? Been debating about building one of those, or just going with some more M-Series+ wedges.

Here are some pics of the grind, sole camber, leading edge, etc. Hopefully this can help answer your question.

My latest obsession in irons went largely under the radar. They were my test irons but I never hit the whole set. PTM blacks.
These hit all my wants and needs in an iron. 4 way sole. Top line thats not too big. Forged DBM finish. Soft feel. Surprisingly forgiving yet still pull off all those players shots. The 4 iron has been amazing.

My driver is the KE4 TC. Today I stumbled upon a whale of a shaft for it today. Robin Arthur the head of Xcaliber kept telling me to hit the T6☆ S shaft. I hit the TS flex shaft of that model and it just wasn't for me. Its a lot of shaft. So I wrote off the S flex. Well I was doing some prototype testing and for the hell of it brought the T6☆ S flex out too. After a good 6 swings I settled into some big time bombs. Its a high flying low spin shaft. In wet conditions i hit a 295, 287, 287 and an uphill 280 par 4 to the back of the green, that lead to an eagle. The prototype had a hard time keeping up. A lot of drives were close but the T6 would go by 7-8 yards at times. I hit a lot of shafts and I'm a little ticked off i had this in the rack for at least 6 months. Yet I never hit it. 20200528_222409.jpg20200528_222433.jpg20200528_222712.jpg20200528_222931.jpg20200528_222752.jpg20200528_222957.jpg20200528_222951.jpg

I want to start messing around with graphite iron shafts, and I've fallen down the TS-2 rabbit hole (thanks @Popeye64 for all the excellent reviews on various forums).  Currently playing Cobra F8s with Nippon Modus 3 105 (S flex).  I like them, but I feel like graphite would be better for my back.    I'm thinking about the Recoil 780 ES.  Looking forward to jumping on the TS-2 bandwagon.

What's in the bag:

Take a good look at the Xcaliber Pro X iron shafts. They are the ideal transition shaft for the player that has to switch to graphite because of age and a beat up body.
They are a graphite shaft with a metal woven mesh blended into the shaft. Acts like steel, dampens like graphite and distance of graphite. Its a shaft i have been playing with for years. 85g and 95g versions.
The Avalon i8 and i9 are the Pro X to another level.
Both versions are very stable and consistent.
Zoom in on the picture and you can see the woven meah. 1-11%20(1).jpg

Those Avalons are dead sexy.  And the Pro X look pretty nice as well.  I hear nothing but good things about them.  And I like the idea of a 95 gram shaft, coming from 105s.  Only problem is... I don't build my own stuff; I was planning on having Golfworks build me a 7 iron to try it out.  I'd love to do it some day when I have the time, but that day is not now.  And it looks like GW doesn't carry Xcaliber shafts.

OK so I'm going to ask for a suggestion here.. I'm thinking about either

A. Building a TSW 50* to accompany my 56*. My current Gap is a W/S 51* set Gap which works just great but for some reason is about 1" shorter than I think it needs to be. I'm just so damn enamored with the TSW wedge that I would rather just build another one than have the W/S extend 1".

OR

B. Building a TS-1 3 iron to cover my 220-230 yd gap AND to start using exclusively in place of driver at my exec. I've got a KBS Tour 90 3i shaft that would be a killer match up with this head. My current setup is only utilizing 12 clubs so I've got room to add another.

$ permitting, I would easily just do both, but I'm faced with an either/or situation right now. The way I see it, is that I would use both equally at my course as there are 8 par 4's and roughly about 8-9 holes with either a tee or approach 130 yds or less that the 50* would come in handy.

To add another twist, I'm hoping to be able to have a full set of TS1-s built by year's end AND I will at some point add the 50* TSW. So either way, I will eventually have both clubs in the bag.. it's just a matter of which one do I want right now? 😛

Cheers!

Always interested in hearing more about the Driving Irons!

FYI, the Maltby shafts are wildly underrated! I had a 4 hybrid that I played for a little while and ended up giving to my dad but the shaft in it was absolutely beautiful. Both in terms of looks and performance. If Maltby made a low spin X flex driver shaft, I'd be all over it!.

I got it with the Adilla NV 2KXV Blue. Going to see how I do with a mid launch mid spin shaft I normally have a very high laugh and high spin swing. Going to see how I do with it.

Really liking it. A little soft for my liking but the distance I am getting is pretty stout. I hit one today that I won’t say how far because I don’t think most would believe me. I’ll just say it went a very very long ways. Love the ball flight also. Thanks again!

I did it, I pulled the trigger on a TS-1 3 iron head. Also ordered the ferrules that go with it.

@Popeye64 if I might pick your brain, I've got a KBS Tour 90 shaft. It's .370 Parallel tip. Have you had any experience with the "universal" hosel? I've just read that you load up the inside with epoxy to fill the void at the bottom.

Any other words of wisdom? 😄
