The M Series + wedges are just brilliant in the variety of soles they offer. You can find just the right wedge if you swallow your pride and forget about Tour style designs.

I'm a digger and the courses are here generally pretty soft (clay that stays wet forever), so I'll be going with wide soles and bounce.  And I like a 50/54/58 setup.  The only thing I'm worrying about is that the mid-grind 54* (widest sole for that loft) has only 6* of bounce.  That seems low for a club I'll use out of the sand.  Does the wider sole make up for it?

Those have a much higher effective bounce. So you can almost throw out the factory bounce rating. In my setup I use 52 and 56. The 52 is the M+ Tour which is the narrowest but hardly a true tour wedge. Then the 56 is the mid with the much larger sole. As a digger they are near perfect for my game. Help with more bounce but still enough to be very versatile..

I buy new heads every year so my wedges are always fresh. Its so cheap.

@Popeye64 gave you the goods, I just feel compelled to stick my nose in.

I have a Maltby Design 60* that I use, its the predecessor to the M-series+, without the DBM treatment.  Absolutely love the wedge, its awesome.  My course has clay based soil also, it works in the wet, and it works in the dry. 

Also like it quite well out of the sand.  My course has something firmer/denser sand, I've also played courses with finer/softer sand, it works for me in both.

And it'll spin the ball rather nicely.

Well, she did it yesterday.  She shot 36 and got past the 150 mark.  She did it by keeping the 890 in the bag on holes with trouble short of the green and pitched it on to make easy 4s, but took advantage of holes with more of an opening and put it right near the front of the green.  Now she moves back to 200 and will get to hit a few more drivers.

They are only down to a few sets left of the PTM Black. I just picked up another set myself before they disappear.
The PTM fell victim to a run away best seller in the TS line. Its really a shame because in doing fittings I would sell three sets of PTMs to one set of the TS line. It was a do all, be all, no nonsense iron that damn near everyone could hit well. Wasn't fancy with understated good looks.
Will be interesting to see what comes next. Because the TS line knocked out almost three heads. The MMB-17, the PTM and the TE is just holding on.

Wow, didn't realize the TE might be on the outs as well. I'm definitely intrigued what will be coming out next! Hope it's soon.

I saw the PTMs were being discontinued and was surprised. They are such a great design. Love mine, and they're going to give the SpeedZones a run for their money this offseason.

While I have absolutely NO intentions of moving away from my TS-1's anytime soon, it would be cool to see them do just a straight player's blade and/or CB. Possibly something with a split set possibility in mind. Something like the set version of the TSW.. or just a completely new design.

All of that might just be wishful thinking though.. time will tell

I am looking for advice on buying a set of irons, a driver and maybe upgrading my hybrids.

I have always used "hand me down" clubs from my dad, who plays around with shafts, grips, amateur club building, etc.  I remember seeing Austad's and Golfsmith catalogs when growing up and visiting him, once i grew up and moved out.

After looking at a ton of articles and things found on the web, i plan to visit multiple demo days in the area, and plan to get a full fitting at PGA Superstore and another local store (or two).

Based on the price, I am seriously considering Maltbys, but want to know how to compare what I find at fittings and retailers to these clubs.  I really like the looks and reviews on the Maltby KE4 S because I am not good enough (in my opinion) to play with a players club, as my handicap is in the low 20s and I don't "shape" shots. I just want consistent new clubs that don't cost $1500.

 

Any advice on how to order based on recommendations and specs that I might obtain from club fittings?

Any questions to ask when i go to demo days and fittings? 

Any things to look for when looking at Callaways, Pings, Taylor Made, Titleist? (those are the demo days i have on my calendar in the next few weeks)

Any other things to consider?

I highly recommend going through the custom shop at Golfworks website. If you are unsure about what you want built they will guide you through. Its a great deal for a custom built set of clubs and they will fully stand behind the build. Can't go wrong.

+1 on the Custom Shop. To narrow down which shaft, you could see if there is a Mizuno shaft optimizer to try. They fit it on an iron and based on how you swing, it gives a list of shafts that could work based on swing speed and transition. Good starting place

Has anybody tried the TE Forged and the KE4 Tour+ Maltby irons? I am curious of your experience with both, and what you find different between them?

I am thinking about both sets mainly based on price: both under $300 new with the TT Score shaft. The STi2 seems a bit more bulky, like the Ping G2 I already have, which I am trying to get away from (the cheapest option).

I am thinking also of 5i or 6i at standard length and then as the clubs get shorter going 3/8" instead of 1/2" to increase swing weight and playing length as they get shorter. 

I also play standard length at 2° up. 

Any feedback you have would be helpful.

I have hit both the TE Forged and the KE4 Tour+ irons. IMO both were great designs, just not quite optimized for my swing. Both have a very sharp leading edge and when I get into bad habits, I’m somewhat of a steep digger. I also found the feel of the KE4 to be a bit harsh but still solid. 
 

Both clubs were just wrong for the conditions I play in, and my current swing. So that is something you’ll have to consider. 
 

That being said, I wouldn’t be too quick to rule out the STi2. IMO, it looks nothing like the Ping G2. There is minimal progressive offset and the top line falls into what I would describe as medium. It’s certainly not a club that I would describe as overly large or “Fred Flintstone” looking as far as chunkiness. It’s a very solid club. As far as forgiveness and feel go, I would place it right dab in the middle of both the TE Forged and KE4 Tour+. It also has a cambered sole/leading edge which might be my favorite thing about it. Fit me, it glides fairly freely thru the turf. 
 

If you’re coming from those Pings. They have quite a bit of meat on the top line and a fair amount of offset. The TE Forged has minimal constant offset. And the KE4 Tour+ has significantly less offset when compared to the Pings.  It might be a bigger transition to one of those clubs than it would be to go with the STi2, which has slightly more offset in the longer clubs. 
 

Additionally, I found the quality of the TT Score LT shafts to be excellent.

I have the STi2 in the back pocket as an alternative because I hit the Pings so well that straying too far away from them is probably setting myself up for failure. 

I was, pre-covid, hitting 1,500-2,000 balls a month and playing about 2-4x per month. Now I hit about 1 bucket every 6 weeks and play 9 holes about every 3 weeks. The result is that my ball striking is way less than optimal right now where the STi2 is looking much better. 

I have a set of Hogan and Titleist Irons I can take to the range to work on ball striking because they tell me if I hit the sweet spot much more than my Pings. But, for now, I am gaming the Pings to regain some sanity.

Ordered my irons based on fitting specs that I received a few weeks back - they came in on Saturday and I was able to play with them on Monday.  I wanted to share pics.  I also wanted to let you know that I appreciated all the posts and information I got from this forum.  I look forward to seeing other Maltby pics and info in the future.  I am trying to talk a golfing buddy into buying from Maltby also

I am super happy with them.  When I am able to play with new folks, they always ask what I am playing, and comment on how solid they sound.  I hit them well, and with the new driver I purchased in late January I am always in the high 80s/low 90s, where I was struggling to break 100 before.  I am sure it is not just the clubs, as I am playing a lot more regularly.  I also purchased a 56 degree wedge from Golfworks/Maltby, and am thinking about getting a 5 iron to match my set, as I only ordered 6 thru pitching wedge.

 

As far as forgiveness, they feel fine.  I have always been a slicer, and now my shots are more of a push rather than a slice.  I have been working on taking easier swings, so I cannot really comment on distance because I am not looking for that.  I normally hit an 8 iron when others are hitting a PW, but I am beating them by 10 strokes and I don't lose any balls, so I will take it.

For the money (and really regardless of the money) I am super happy with them!
