Anybody else feeling like this right about now with the release of the TS1-IM and TS4? 😜

These just dropped! OMG!!!!!! 🤯

Now do I do a full set of either? Or a split set?

I've decided as much as I love looking at the TS3, the distance loss (and  the subsequent extra club needed in the set (5-GW vs 6-GW)) is enough for me to hold off.

But here's my question: having recently hit the P790s and bring pretty wowed by their results, and knowing you compared the TS1's to the 770s, I'm curious if the new TS1-M might be what I'm ultimately looking for.

Thoughts?

I am way behind you guys on all this but I have been hitting the DBM GW and really like the feel and just the simplicity of the iron. I could see it floating or ballooning on me a little bit but I have the urge to build up a set before they go away. I don't need a new set of irons. My irons are fine. Why do I do this? But just getting a 5i - PW pack with score shafts and BB&F ferrules would only be about $300. 😍

If only I could find someone to buy the New Level Gi22 irons that I bought that I don't love. But the resale value on a lot of these DTC clubs is basically zero.

So my first question to you.. have you tried having the lofts on the TS3 adjusted? Looking at the specs on the P790, the lofts are a bit stronger through the set so that could play a big part in the distance difference.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I personally buy into the hollow body, polymer filled irons adding a substantial amount of distance. I've hit solid blades with higher lofts the same distance as my TSI's. It's all a matter of club head speed, and impact quality. I find that it's the misshits that don't get punished as severely. This however is my subjective angle.

I don't personally think that the TS1 IM will be the solution to finding more distance. If anything, they might be a step backwards as far as inspiring the confidence that the TS3 does. The P790 is one of the best selling and designed irons ever made. The line between the 770 or TSI and 790 is that the 790 is a game improvement club with some better player notes added. The P770/TS1 I M is a player's distance club with some GI notes. Without actually seeing the TS3, my understanding is that maybe it sits snugly in between the 2?

A final note, and to add possible further confusion 🤪.. don't ever not heavily consider the TS1. IMO if it were stamped with a major brand name, it would easily be a hot topic iron.

Have you tried the TS3 with the lighter Nippons? If you haven't already tried a stronger loft adjustment and slightly lighter shaft, I'd give that a go before considering a different head. The TS3's should stack up to be every bit as forgiving and long as the P790s from what I've read.

Maybe our resident Maltby expert @Popeye64can add his $.02? 😁

Part of the distance loss issue is the extreme low COG of the TS3. The iron loves to spin. With more mass below the ball they have a tendency to spin more. Take the simple visual que from the green. Identically built clubs, minus loft. Ke4 Max hits the green and releases forward about a foot or two. TS3 will hit and back up a foot. Thos is consistent with nearly every club in the set. Data numbers back up the added spin of the TS3. That right there will effect the length of flight. It's not a major factor but they will fly less. The KE4 Max has a very high COG. All players distance  irons have a high COG. Thats why they go so far.

After hitting my test 7 iron a few more times, I decided to sell the heads of my C721 TEE irons.  I never could get used to the turn interaction with them.  My TS3 heads are arriving today and after a re-shaft and regrip my brothers 3 wood tonight I am going to put the news TS3's on the KBS TGI 80 shafts.

Thanks @Popeye64! I knew you would drop the knowledge😁

So to help with @GolfSpy_SAM's conundrum, would a lighter flex and stronger 1-2° stronger loft possibly help find an extra 5-10 yds? Or would a move to the TS1 be the way to go?

ALso, and for my personal curiosity .. you wouldn't happen to have gotten your hands on either the TS1 IM or TS4 would you? I'm really torn between either but am blindly leaning towards the TS4.

On his issue I wouldn't necessarily chase shaft options, but I would go with a few degrees stronger loft. I would stick with a stable and well matched set of shafts. Going as lite as he can control. I would also pay attention the the ball being used. A high spin ball kills distance on the average player.
I have both the TS1M and the TS4 inbound.

You guys rock.

So ideally, I like the idea of the TS3 6-GW, with the 6 bent to 26° (two strong), with the GW being at 46°...and then I'd probably go 50-54-58 (or maybe 50-55-60, depending). Then I'd have room for 23-ish hybrid/fw wood, 5/3 wood and driver. If my math is right, that gets me to 13.

I don't mind the extra spin in the TS3 - if anything I tend to be a bit low-spin (apparently, per recent fit), but with the TS3 six iron being 28 (and my current GI 7-iron being 28.5), I was feeling like I'd need to game seven irons (5-GW) in order to fill the same slots. Which meant dropping something somewhere, which was feeling less than ideal.

A lot of the PD irons have a 6-iron in that 26/25° window, which is fine for where I'm at, considering I like lofted fw woods.

I love how the TS3's feel, for sure, but I'm not sure I ultimately NEED them as much as want them.

Really appreciate all the conversation and advice!

Currently gaming the Nippon 105 stiff, and they're pretty great. Got fitted into the PX IO 5.5 while at a fitting, and those also felt incredible. Recently swung the P790s with the KBS Tour Lite S (100g), so I'm pretty much in that 100-105 window - I do like how the 5.5's loaded, but the difference was pretty minimal between all three, honestly.

My driver swing speed is right about 101 - plus/minus 3 given the day.

Stu has been trying to get me to reshaft the TS3 6-iron with the 105 (I built it up with the Score TT cut to R+, as it was the cheapest option for me to demo this way), to get a real apple-to-apple comparison, which is probably the only real way to know, considering the Score is about 10g heavier.

It's not VERY different, but it's definitely different.

I built out my set of TS3s, 5-GW with the modus 105x (so a little heavier than the stiff) and found my windows to be pretty spot on and the shaft a very good match with the head… for me. The standard deviation of the 7 iron head was pretty impressive, especially on carry and spinsistency (lol Ping fans) 😂

FWIW I found that the TS3 spun less than my former TS-1 gamers. Different strokes…

After comparing the TS3 7 iron to the Tour Edge C721 counterpart, I ended up pulling the C721 heads and selling them on the bay.  Kept the KGS TGI 80 shafts and installed the 5 thru P of TS3 iron heads.

While the click/firm feeling of the 721's were ok, the sole of the 721's just didn't work/feel right.  It is crazy that the TS3, when struck well, hardly feel like you even struck a golf ball.  League starts this coming Thursday.  Can hardly wait.

In case anyone is interested, I have attached a chart with the Maltby TS line of irons.  It compares loft and offsets for each model.

Not that I'm trying to talk you out of it.. but I was interested in the same idea so I posted this question on the Maltby site and was more or less convinced that a blended set wouldn't really serve a functional purpose. Just different aesthetics.

So, your saying gets the forgiving blades in the bag? Well seeing a degree or less loft difference, more MPF (I know its negligible 44) thinner topline, more sole, and sole milling. @azstu324 you're making me spend more not less. Probably pull the trigger on a single if i need anything else from GolfWorks.

When you get in the set please share pics especially top line with TS1 or TE.

This may need to be a winter experimentation since I definitely need a driver over irons.

Oh I definitely will post pics from all angles. My predicament right now is that I'm a little cash poor and golf gear rich.. so I have to move some things before I get the true green light from the "boss". Right now I'm kind of looking at a pink-ish yellow light. I could probably pull the trigger BUT I'd likely be facing some violation charges if I do 😜

Additionally, I'm trying to find a good shaft option. I've considered keeping my FCM Royals that are in my TS1's.. but then I'd have to take them apart and I'd rather not do that. Thinking some KBS C taper Lites would look and play really nice.. so many irons (pun intended) are in this fire at the moment.

Thinking some KBS C taper Lites would look and play really nice.. so many irons (pun intended) are in this fire at the moment.

Those violation charges can be filed retroactively, so beware!  😂

Alright y'all.. I did it! I pulled the trigger on the TS4's!! There's just enough info floating around to make me feel just comfortable enough.

I'm picking up the shafts tonight. Looking at KBS C-Taper Lite 110's with the blue/grey GP MCC +4 grips.

These babies will have more satin than Boogie Nights!

Hopefully they'll come in Saturday, Monday at the latest.

And yes.. THERE WILL BE PICTURES!

So my initial go round with the TS3 heads was rudely ruined by a shaft setup that was entirely too stiff.

I struggled to hit the TS3 well in play but could be a range hero with a very strong swing. My in play swing is much smoother yet I couldn't get the TS3s to cooperate. I was losing them right over and over again. It wasn't until someone mentioned the very low bottom of the bore to ground measurement. This will have an effect on overall club stiffness. In the Rapid Taper case, which is very sensitive to flex setup, my clubs CPMd at a full flex stiffer. 13 to 14 CPM higher than what I like. I am almost embarrassed at not realizing something was so drastically off. Rapid Tapers are so unique they don't act the same way other shafts do in certain scenarios.

So once I rebuild the TS3s, I'll have a TS4 and a TS1M loaded up for a three way playoff.

Initially when I had a TS3 head loaded up in a RT 105 R+ shaft I was surprised at how great it was performing. When I made up the full set they were all S flex. Built up, they tested to be just about an X. Little had I realized that the R+ was playing at almost an S flex.

For as long as I have been building clubs and think you know it all.... you can certainly over look some details. Should have know better.

Full set, all except driver.  DBM Irons, raw wedges, forged driving iron 19 degrees and 3wood.  Love them, built them a couple of years back and can't beat the value.  So far, so great.IMG_6344.jpeg.624c80d6d802a227d8873c2f50f77225.jpeg

I have a set of Maltby TE forged irons (4-GW) with the the Recoil shafts (R flex) they offer in the PAK. I use these when I travel, along with an Orlimar Hip Ti driver, Callaway Big Bertha 4 wood, and an old Ping Anser putter that’s probably forty years old. I use this set when I travel, because I do not want the airlines to abuse the Bridgestone Tour Premium CB irons I play when I am home. The TE forged irons perform as well as my Bridgestones and are less than half the cost I paid for my Bridgestones. Tou can’t beat that! The Bridgestones are on their last leg, so I am definitely going with a new set of Maltbys in the not to distant future.

does this count?

I wish I could game it. It's a really nice putter, just too heavy for me.
