Recommended Posts

Currently, my favorites are:

  • Fazio Canyons/Foothills, Coore-Crenshaw Cliffside, and Palmer Lakeside at Barton Creek
  • Slick Rock and Ram Rock at Horseshoe Bay
  • Stone bridge Ranch - Dye Course, Cowboys Golf Club and Stevens Park in Dallas
  • Falconhead in Austin
  • Squaw Valley in Glen Rose

I live in Dallas so my exposure to other cities is limited. Really excited to play Sqauw Valley in Glen Rose this weekend. Anyone play it?

These may not be what I would call favorites because I don't live in Texas anymore. Native Texan. But they are the ones we have enjoyed.

Dallas - Texas Star - My wife and I usually travel to or through Dallas every year and we try to play somewhere different each time. But we have played Texas Star every year just because we like the greens, atmosphere, and the scenery cruising around that place. The people there are always so nice.

Dallas - Cowboys Golf - We also like Dallas Cowboys but with 2 of us playing that gets pretty expensive. Also we drink beer the whole time and having them include free food in the fees doesn't really pay off much for us.

Austin - Falcon Head - We also had a good time in Austin playing here and it wasn't really expensive but it was a really fun layout.

Love falconhead too! Played in before a wedding in Austin! Tough course. Updated it to my original post!

I’m with you on Barton Creek. I’ve played there many times! San Antonio has some good golf, even the City courses, and I’ve enjoyed playing the TPC, and the Quarry there as well. I played Butterfield Trail in El Paso and loved it. I also like Dallas Star, but I don’t remember the names of courses I’ve played in Dallas.... Been some years ago. East Tx has some very good courses as well, near Longview/Tyler. Courses in Kingwood, Katy, The Woodlands, etc are all better than the public ones IN Houston. Not a fan of Houston golf...

I will also check out Old American. Question for any of you guys. I guess the new requirements have restricted me from applying to be a tester because  I only have 8 likes and need 15. Those Ben Hogan Icon irons, made in DFW area, look awesome! Are you guys seeing the same restrictions? Not that they would likely select me anyway, but kind of a drag. Thinking about running by the factory next trip, if they are allowing it during corona virus, and checking them out. Has anyone seen them up close? Kind of a Texas golf subject.

I've played many of the courses listed above and they are good ones for sure. We also have several here and around the local area that are quite good as well. I live in W. Texas and two of the best courses that anyone can play listed below. If any of you guys ever leave the big city areas you'll thank yourself for trying these two.

Diamondback in Abilene http://www.diamondbackgolfclub.biz/ - Charles Coody design - always in top condition with impeccable greens - what else would you expect from a former Master champion?

Rawls Course in Lubbock https://therawlscourse.com/ - Tom Doak design - very challenging design with great greens and many rugged/wild bunkers. (if you've ever played Pacific Dunes you'll see Doak's architecture style in this course.)

My Sun Mountain bag currently includes:   TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png 771CSI 5i - PW and TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png PFC Micro Tour-c 52°, 56°, 60 wedges

I was a tester for Ft Worth irons two years ago, and I reached-out to the guys at Hogan HW about coming-by. They said there isn’t much to see there, and kind of discouraged me from stopping. It may have changed by now, but it doesn’t hurt to just give them a call and see if they’re allowing visitors, when is best, and if you need an appointment.

This is all you’ll see:

The Tribute is a good one around Dallas. If you can get on, Lantana is pretty fun as well. For affordable public golf Coyote Ridge in Lewisville is a fun and surprising challenge.

Oh wow, yeah maybe I will stick to just ordering a demo club or 2. That is not what I expected on the BH clubs location. I understand they were coming back from bankruptcy but that’s really small.

I also just got back from playing 5 rounds in Glen Rose. Squaw Valley has two amazing courses: The Lakes and The Links. Both in GREAT shape, very friendly staff, very affordable and a nice little getaway in a small town. Also shot the best round of my life on the links! 79 for a 5.7 differential! Makes for a good time when you go low!!

What're your favorites in Texas?
Texas Star, Castle Hills in Lewisville, Wildcat in Houston, Champions (Cypress Creek, of course), Wolfdancer in Bastrop, and Lochinvar in Houston. I worked at Redstone in high school, now Golf Club of Houston, so I've got a spot for the member course, which used to be El Dorado, but idk how it stacks up without my nostalgia!

Oh. And if you're ever in Laredo, you've GOT to play The Max. Multiple holes have the Rio Grande as a water hazard and the day I played it, there was only one other group on the course. Probably because it 114 out?

I didn’t put this one on the list, but Firewheel over in Garland was a fun track. Some strange hole designs going on there but very scenic and it was not overly priced and made for a fun day.

I would consider Firewheel my first "home course".  Played there most Friday's for about 5 years straight.  Haven't played the Bridges much as I moved to Austin in 1995 but the Old Course was my favorite while the Lakes Course did have some funky holes.

Firewheel, is my home course, play a lot of FGA tournaments there. but I like to play different course, not the same one over and over.
Lakes and the Bridges are the best there.

I had forgotten about Pine Dunes until yesterday. Played it again for the first time in six years. Was once named “Beat Course in Texas” by Golfweek. It’s awesome. So much fun. Challenging, great condition, and a steal for a price!!!! It’s in East TX, in Frankston. Play it. So worth it!

The Tyler/Longview area has some great tracks. Love Pine Dunes, just wish their lodging was better. I would like to have a Ryder Cup style gathering at that course (good neutral location for DFW and Houston) but the lodging is the only thing keeping me away from it.

Oak Hills CC (San Antonio - Tillinghast) - layouts simply don’t get much better, and if Tripp Davis botches the renovation, I’ll never forgive him.

Austin Golf Club (Spicewood - Crenshaw/Coore) - legit caddies, designed to walk, Zoysia everywhere and they allow metal spikes... need I say more?

Maybe you should just move back to Texas and hook us up at these courses.

I’m working on it.

Sweet thread!!!!!

Houston:

  • Gleannloch Pines (Gleann, Loch, Pines) - all three 9 hole courses are well maintained, challenging, and fun.
  • Raveneaux Country Club - grew up playing here while it was private but a developer just purchased it and its public for the next couple of years now
  • Black Horse (South Course) - very challenging course in Cypress, TX
  • Carlton Woods ( Woodlands) - if you can get out there do it.
  • Champions (Cypress Course) - if you can get out there do it.
  • High Meadow (Magnolia) - awesome open course.
  • BUCKET LIST COURSES NOT YET PLAYED IN HOUSTON, TX:
    • Bluejack
    • Golf Club of Houston

Austin:

  • Barton Creek Fazio Canyons -  Favorite track in all Austin that's accessible.
  • Avery Ranch ( Cedar Park, TX) - challenging, beautiful course. Greens are always consistent and in good shape.
    • WARNING: weekend play is HORRENDOUSLY SLOOOOOW. If you can play during the week, do that.
  • Star Ranch (Hutto, TX) - fun, open, easy to score course. Pace of play never really an issue. Also, a very walkable course. Great practice facilities (2 big putting greens, 2 big pitching/chipping greens, separate bunker pitching green, and large grass range) - highly recommend for a large group, relaxing round and/or confidence building, practice round.
  • Lost Creek CC (Westlake) - fun, challenging private course (club corp club)
  • Twin Creeks (Cedar Park/Volente Beach) - very challenging, Fred Couples designed private course. Shoot well here and you'll crush a high percentage of courses you step onto.
  • HEADS UP:
    • Pace of play at any of the Magnolia Group courses (Avery Ranch, Teravista, Falconhead) - horrible pace of play and over crowded during peak seasons. Courses are in good shape but the overall experience in spring and summer is horrible. Not walkable either.
    • Public tracks: Crystal Falls and Lago Vista are hit or miss with greens quality. Lots of blind tee shots. Greens are inconsistent hole-to-hole and do not hold approach shots consistently.
  • BUCKET LIST COURSES NOT YET PLAYED IN AUSTIN, TX:
    • Spanish Oaks (Bee Cave)
    • Austin Country Club (Westlake)
    • UT Golf Club (Steiner Ranch)
    • Austin Golf Club (Spicewood)
    • Cimarron Hills (Georgetown)

No doubt. Pretty trashy... I thought about this when I came-up 18, and said no way I’d stay in their lodging!

Suggestions in the Tyler/Longview area, other than Pine Dunes, which was an hour-and-a-half from my hotel in Longview. I’ll be there every two weeks or so...
