I’m playing “The Quarry” in San Antonio next Monday, last minute trip staying near the course.

Make sure you have a BUNCH of water in the cart when you head to #10. It’s like a sauna on the back 9, but I love it anyway!!!! I wish I still covered San Antonio for work just to meet-up with a few guys I met there after work. Great guys to have a beer with afterwards too.

They have a cool emblem, and always have FJ shirts on-sale….

I traveled the whole State for work, and I have to say, Houston was very disappointing for quality public golf courses. A couple way out North, but other than Wildcat, which I didn’t care for, there aren’t many South.

BlackHorse Course is a nice one in the Houston area.. North and South

The Quarry has one of the best back nines, both in regards to scenery and difficulty, in the state. Good bass in the ponds on the front nine. Absolutely love that course.

Black Horse has quickly joined the ranks of overcrowded Houston golf courses. Paying $90+ for a tee time, and then having to wait for tee boxes and approach shots is pretty frustrating. Not to mention hole 13 on the South Course eats my lunch every time...

I've been fortunate enough to play Houston Oaks (in Big 12 championship condition). It will probably be my favorite course/experience in Texas till I die.

Tiger is the GOAT, change my mind.

I'm jealous you got to play Houston Oaks. That's on the S. Tex bucket list next to Whispering Pines.

There is a course with a cliff on one of the bases in San Antonio. It was my first taste of Texas golf for a flatland fL boy. There is a cliff at the turn before a wild uphiller, I mean stories worth of terrain. My Pops was retired Airman. That was b4 TPC in Bastrop with opposing 9s, another in Bastrop w/ a few river holes, and all the glorious terrain found all over Texas. It's been 2 decades, my apologies for absence of names  and to myself for not living in Texas. Say Hi to Salt Lick Grill at Grissmill and the Pappas Bros.!!!

I haven't seen anyone mention this course yet, but I really like Vaaler Creek in Blanco. It is a very fun layout, and it has been in excellent shape all three times I have played it.

Being in DFW, we are blessed to have several great courses to play. I’ve played 75 of the top 100 public courses before joining a private club. These are some of my favs in north Texas!

Tierra Verde, Indian Creek-Creek course, Texas Star, Fossil Creek, Rockwood, Hawks Creek, Waterchase, Sugar Tree, Tempest, Tenison-Highlands course

I also play in a tourney every year at Horseshoe Bay and love Apple and Ram Rock courses.

I've been playing some golf in Houston area for a few years, visiting over memorial day:

Golf Club of Houston, Tournament course, reminds me a bit of the inland Spyglass holes, always in great condition

Meadowbrook farms in Katy, decent Greg Norman track

Cypress Lakes, played it  a few times, fun course very good conditions as well

Memorial Park, have not played it after the renovation but the old layout was ok

The TPC course at the Woodlands, it was OK, decent track, enjoyed

I've just played two courses in Dallas over July 4th, hope to maybe play a few more:

TPC at Las Colinas

Cottonwood Private course

Both were in excellent condition and a decent, fun challenge, I enjoyed the practice facility at the TPC

I lived it Texas for 16 years and I played all over the state.  My favorite area is east Texas--Several great courses....Holly Tree in Tyler and The Challenge at Oak Forest Country club.  is also great.  You need to include many of the never mentioned little town courses in out of the way areas.  Some great courses that are inexpensive to play yet great players show up everyday and play them.  Some are 9 hole courses and others are 18 holes but stop while driving through all parts of the state at just play some of them.

I need to find my copy, but back in 2003, Jason Stone released the Texas Golf Bible and it had an overview of every course in Texas. It was amazing to see all of the nine hole courses in remote areas. I really wish a new version would come out but I understand how much time and effort it would take to create such a masterpiece. It was one of the thickest books I owned.
