I was going to ask about whole bags, but woods and especially putters are probably a different frequency so I chose irons as a decent indicator. This is not about replacing for damage (that’s why the poll is full sets), just how often do you act on the itch to have new irons? I chose broad frequency choices, just pick whichever is closest to your norm please.

I kept my last set of irons over 20 years, but that included a hiatus of about 15 years. But I’m planning on about every 4-6 years (2-3 product cycles for my favorite brand). I can’t imagine buying every time a new model comes out, but I know some club ho’s do.

And I have two favorite brands of irons, that could change, but slowly. I’ve owned three brands of irons in 56 years...

I tend to change every couple of years.  I don't necessarily wear them out, but I get the itch to swap them out.  I'll try any brand, I tend to gravitate to what I think looks good when I'm purchasing.

I used to work retail golf and got a nice discount and would get a new set every year, selling the old set for about the cost of the new set.  But, those days are well behind me.  Recently, I've bought new irons about every 3 years or so.  However, prices have really gone up and I'll likely extend that period since my most recent purchase last year.

Wedges, yearly.  Putters, don't ask.  Driver, again don't ask.  Fairway/hybrids seem to last longest in my bag.

Glad I chose irons instead of whole bags. I’d agree putters especially are a different category altogether. Some people change putters often. OTOH occasionally I’ll run into someone with late model clubs but a really old favorite putter. I actually ran into someone still using an Acushnet Bullseye a few months ago - the rest of his bag was only a few years old. With putters, you go with whatever works for you - there’s no right answer for everyone.

No set timeframe but it is generally every 5-10 years.   Been more frequent over the past few years due to a forum test and then I found a used set of Srixons that I really loved.   I don;t see the Srixons coming out of the bag anytime soon.

In my early teens I learned on a hand-me-down set of Henry Griffith Blade irons my Dad had just replaced, played those until I could break 80. Around 2005 or so, I upgraded to the Mizuno cut back MP32. Loved those clubs, but wore the grooves off the irons to the point that stores wouldn't even take them off my hands, let alone buy off me. Replaced them with the Ping iBlades the day they came out in 2016 and I expect to use them for another 5 years or so depending on how well they hold up. I am in the process of building a simple simulator set up in my yard so I expect I may be putting some additional wear and tear on them that the other clubs I used never saw.

Irons, if they are fitted, at least 4 years in the bag. Tend to skip 1 product release. And I like this approach and certainly hope to apply it to drivers and wedges. For some reason, I don't wear out wedges that quickly.

Irons every other year. Tested Cobra Bio Cells then 2 years later Cobra F6’s. the year I purchased new Ben Hogan Ptx’s I was selected to test Cobra F8’s. This year I purchased Wilson D7’s .....don’t need irons, still using Cobra F8 Fairways and King wedges. Also still using the Cobra bag.

I tend to get DIFFERENT irons sets about every year sometimes more. I have never been through a professional fitting before always just fit myself. I have also only owned 2 brand new iron sets and they came from MGS testing with the latest set to arrive in the coming hours. Otherwise I strictly stick to used sets and really enjoy seeing how each set reacts to my swing.
Drivers and putters were multiple times a year trying to find something that works but I believe I have found a something with a lot of potential that has kept me from looking at anything since I got them ( PXG 0811x Gen2 and a flow neck X5).
I don’t change wedges very often as they are the most personal club in the bag to me.

I may also be buried with my Srixon F85 5 wood. I haven’t come across anything that can touch it for distance or dispersion and that includes 3 woods as I don’t carry one because of the F85.

I generally get new irons every 5 to 7 years.  The last few sets were MacGregor JNP, Mizuno MP30, Titleist AP2 714, and the new Titleist T200s I just posted a couple of pictures of.  I'm a big believer in the "archer not the arrow" philosophy.

I have been playing just under 3 years and have had 5 sets of irons so it looks like every year?

  1. $35 set off Craigslist broke in 4 weeks
  2. Hand me down set of Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons with S-90 stiff Bubble graphite shafts - got my hole in one with this set. played about a year or just under. Also, these went back in rotation from time to time if I got hurt or just felt off with the Titleist irons
  3. Titleist 735.CM Reg flex +1/2" ($160) then another set with stiff, S300 shafts ($67) shortly thereafter but after a year or so ended up being too heavy causing a flinch I had to stop playing them. It wasn't the smaller head that was the issue - I loved the head design.
  4. Ping G2, Stiff ($150) about a year seems to be a good balance of a lighter steel shaft and lots of forgiveness.

I would like to try another set but not in the budget right now.

As you can see, I buy used clubs.

So I voted about ~5 yrs & I'm not married to particular brand (although some might argue I am -- will attempt to explain)

So if you told me I had a tournament with you tomorrow, my go to iron set is ~6 yrs old. Its Wishon 771 CSI's with mix of Maltby/Wishon/Ping wedges that I rotate (the wedges). To be fair the oldest wedge is 2 years old. I rotate wedges 1-2 years.

Regardless, I just can not part ways with my current ~6 yr old set of Wishon irons. Note I have re-shafted the Wishon/Maltby club heads about 2-3 times and obviously re grip when I think I need to.

I religiously attend demo days when I can find one and test all brands. I am not brand specific regarding fairway woods, hybrids as that is one area I experience continual improvement each year-- at least for me, a slow swing type player.

I will go two years at the most but will keep sets longer. They may drift in and out of the bag. I build demos of all of the newer Maltby stuff. I'll try a lot of the new oems as well but have only strayed from components for the Srixon 745s in the last 20 years.

My latest set the PTM blacks have flat out floored me how well they seem to fit my all around game. Really caught me off guard as they just were not on my radar for a gamer..... I'm fairly certain ill buy a second set before they cycle out of production.

every 2-3 years.

I was really tied to nike. but with them going out of business, and my game improving. I have been open to trying everything.

With that said. I find myself probably gravitating to Mizuno and Titliest more. But i will be open to "try" something new.

Looks like I was in the majority with both.  I've had 4 iron sets in the past 16 years, so I probably fall into the every 4 year category, but each set I had was varying lengths of time.  Really dependent on how I get along with them and if the faces stay in decent shape.  Usually go for the "players cavity" iron.

Tend to gravitate to Mizuno and Titleist first, but hit the Srixon 785 about a year ago and really like them.  Would be open to just about anything, but probably not PXG or Miura just because of the price tag.

I replace my irons too often, honestly.  In terms of brand, Im pretty brand agnostic.  I really need to stop messing around and just stick with what I have.  Having said that, Im probably going to replace my TA Atomics with a set of TA 845s. LOL

I favor Tommy Armour right now because they are very good clubs at an amazing price.  If you watch the sales, you can often get them for half as much or less than any of the mainstream OEMs and I honestly find that TAs perform just as well as anything else.

I replace about every 4-5 years.  Exception is my last set of irons (Titleist 716 AP1s) I only kept for one season, but that was mainly due to what I feel was an incorrect fitting. Not a reflection on the clubs themselves bc I have always been a Titleist guy, but I was fit by an assistant club pro into a shaft that was way to stiff for me.  Over that winter I checked into getting them reshafted and that have would cost damn near as much as a new set so I traded them and got the Rogue Pro irons.  I have always like Callaway woods, but this is the first set of their irons I have ever owned.  I like them fairly well, but have decided I am gonna get this year and next out of them and then get something new fall of 21.  I plan to go into the buying process next time around with a little more of an open mind instead of thinking "I like brand X and Y, lets see what they currently have out"

This is interesting in that for most of us this is as much a financial consideration as it is a golf question.  In other words, if I haven't bought clubs it's not because I didn't feel I needed them, it's because I wasn't in a position to spend the money.

My last clubs had R flex shafts and I had clearly outgrown them; I watched my iron shots balloon with regularity.  When I went in for my first lesson it took 5 minutes for the coach to tell me I really needed new clubs, or at least new shafts.  But, I had 2 car payments and plenty of other "life" expenses, so the clubs had to wait.

I'm on a five year plan "sort of" . I read all the reviews when the new models come out.  Then wait two years and find the set I want on close out.  I usually pay less than a third of the original price and they are still new. So even though I replace them after five years they really are 7 years old.  I've tried several brands but wind up with one or two that I stick with. If I wind up with a set that particularly did not work well for me I give to my son. I've had 2 sets of Cobra, 2 sets of Callaway, 3 sets of Wilson Staff. I got my eye on some Srixon's for the next round. Got to hit them on demo day a few weeks ago.

I have replaced my irons since starting a couple year ago quite a bit. I was playing game improvement irons but once I started to get better I was hitting the ball too far and my gapping was terrible. I upgraded to Srixon Z 585 Iron's I couldn't hit them worth crap so I traded for a set of TaylorMade R11 irons. They were decent irons and then was gifted the current set I have and I have stuck with them since november last year. I'm looking at upgrading again to either Callaway Apex Forged or Mizuno JPX900 Forged Irons in the next year. I might even buy new this next time if the manufactures have great sales at the end of the season because of COVID sales being down.

I understand the financial aspect all too well!

I kept my last set of irons over 20 years, but that included a hiatus of about 15 years. But I’m planning on about every 4-6 years.

Same.  I had my PING i-3 blades for 20 years but probably averaged 3 or 4 rounds a year over the last 15 years.  Just got the golf bug again and purchased a new set of irons...would expect to do that every 4 or 5 years assuming I continue to play more.

MGS has opined that you really are looking at about a 5-year window before the technology evolves to the point that your current stuff is lacking. Seems to be true in my case. My 919 Forged are leaps and bounds better than my previous 7-year old irons, but testing drivers nothing really outpaced my GBB Epic.
