Sweet spot? -new golfer

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I went out to do Day one of the planemate (besides hitting indoors) and noticed my PW and SW had marks in the same general location.

is there a sweet spot for each club? If so where is it located?

I am playing the Callaway x-18r and rtx3, I added some pics

You are definitely toe side.   Sweet spots are pretty much center maybe a slight bit heel side.

The sweet spot is the center of gravity for the club.

You can feel like you didn't even hit the ball, flushed it, a pure strike when the club doesn't vibrate or twist.

One way to find it is trial and error but there is a better way. I hold the shaft in the left hand where the club is balanced and with the face pointing to the sky. Then I bounce a ball on the face about, about an inch, to see the spot where the club just goes backward without a wobble or twist that I can feel with my left hand. It can take 5-6 bounces in different spots that are 1/4", 1/2" or 1/8" apart. Once you find it then you will know if it it in the middle, the side, or heel/hosel side and by how much.

Then you also want to try and make contact about one or two grooves up on the face. Lower will launch too low, higher will launch too high.

Learn how far your clubs go with pure impact on the sweet spot. Try swinging no harder than you can consistently hit the sweet spot. Then learn how far the clubs go for that swing = recipe for scoring well.

(The wrong way is swinging inconsistently trying to hit a yardage)

neither are we.   Hitting the center of the face consistently is something all golfers work to perfect.   Part of learning the golf swing is getting a setup and swing that you can do consistently.   Some of the best drills work on hitting toe, heel, and center.   If you can figure out out how to hit the heel,  you should be able to figure out how to hit the middle.

Go to the range with a can of foot spray which will show you exactly where you're hitting the ball. Then start out with 1/4, then 1/2, etc. swings.

Looks like you are consistently hitting off the toe.  I would assume that you get a jarring feel when you hit the club.  This feeling might feel normal to you if you're consistently hitting off center but like a lot or perhaps all sports that uses a tool to hit a ball or object, if it's in the sweet spot, it should be a smooth feel at contact or no impact sensation.  This feel will translate through all clubs.  Typically that sweet spot is generally in the middle of the club slightly below the mid line.  As far as making better contact, it's probably best to ask around and find a pro to give you a lesson.  If you have the time to watch a bunch of youtube videos, multiple cameras to watch your swing, and hours of trial, then that's one way too.  Its doable but I think harder.

The sweet spot is that compression feeling you’ll know it when you hit it, looks like you may have had a few but a little low. @Middler got it right with those pictures.
