Vice Golf Balls in Store

Recommended Posts

Don’t know if anyone has posted it before, but I just saw Vice golf balls being sold in my local Target (picture attached).

Seems to me that this changes the idea and brand around Vice golf. A few of my thoughts below:

  1. How will this affect price? We all know stores require a cost markup to increase margin. Plus, their main value proposition is that it’s a premium for “half the cost” of the other guys.
  2. If they keep the same price, how would that affect quality? They would have to cut costs somewhere.
  3. How will these balls stack up when they are next to the big leaders in the shelf?
  4. We also lose the main cost saving opportunity of buying in bulk.

Very curious to see what you all think as well.

I was at El Prado golf course in Chino Hills on Monday and saw a vending machine selling Vice balls in the pro shop. It must be part of their new marketing strategy.

They've also been spotted at Costco... not sure what this does to effect price.  I had a terrible experience with their customer service however, and will not buy them even though it is now more convenient

I’ve had very iffy performance out of Vice, very inconsistent. Never seen them in stores though.

I haven't ever played them, but have read enough bad reviews to know it's probably not worth my time. Very curious to see how long this new strategy will last.

IMO, this is a big enough shift in their company strategy that it's going to hurt them in the long run. There's no way they can maintain their already lower quality with having to pay the brick and mortar stores.

I actually have played a little with the Vice Pro + Neon (green) recently as I like the lower price point and also enjoy occasionally playing with a non-white ball. I had never played Vice but I picked up a box and put a ball in play for 18 holes. I am also playing around with the TP5/TP5x Pix balls too so it was 9 holes with the vice, 9 holes with the TP5 balls on 2 different rounds. In those 2, 9 hole stints I found that the vice ball probably cost me a little bit of yardage on my driver (marginal though), but picked up a little on the irons. I hit it straight and it putted well. It does feel a little mushy though. When I first switched to the TP5x Pix ball on the 10th hole the first day It was a noticable difference in feel  (Felt like i was hitting a rock with the TP5x, but it still spun and backed up on the greens for iron shots). For the first 9 I shot 2 over and the 2nd nine I shot 1 under so combined total of 1 over in 18 holes. Ball can't be that bad...will probably keep them around for days I want to play a colored ball or just want to save a little money relative the the TP5's or AVX I would normally play.

Interesting that you feel the TP5X are firmer than the Vice. I can't say i have the same comparison but I play Chromesofts and TP5's and i cant really feel a noticeable difference. Maybe the TP5X is firmer that the TP5?

In my last round I played the TP5 pix (not the "x") and it felt much softer than the x version did. I actually quite liked it and plan to play a bit more with this model going forward. I didn't have the vice ball with me in that round, but next time I play I plan to test them side by side more. I also plan to test them on a launch monitor when I get a chance to test ball speed and spin rates to pick which one I will play going forward. While I prefer the feel of the TP5 and Vice ball, if the TP5x gives me better numbers then I'll get used to it.

Yep that makes sense. For me the TP5 is about as soft as the Chromesofts in feel.

Snell being in there sounds interesting to me. With everything MGS has covered, I'd be interested in trying them out. Easier to buy a dozen than get a few shipped to me.

Maybe that is the new marketing strategy for these companies?

I wondered how long it would take them to get into a store.

You could tell with as much as they were marketing that they wanted to be in a store to be "legit" like the big named brands. I can't remember a quality concern when I played a few dozen a couple of years back.

Cut golf though, different story. Not that great of quality with even worse customer service.

I've been gaming vice balls since 2017. Although I am not playing many tournaments, I've had great experiences with the balls. Played pro soft, then pro, and now pro plus. My Pro Plus balls are consistently around the same numbers on my SkyTrak as Pro V1x's. Spin a little less around the green but I like that. No QC issues at all. Love the cheaper prices online vs. what appears to be prices at Target.

Almost had a recent poor customer service issue but Joyce was a big help. Here is my story from my golf blog:

I found a Vice Pro in matte neon green one time and decided to try it for a hole.  I literally could not hit it.  Something about that color.  I dont know if I was closing my eyes or what, but after 3 whiffs, I tossed it back in the woods.

I had Vice Pro Plus on my Amazon list, the neon red went down to $20 for a dozen so I pulled the trigger.  It's very similar to the TP5s I was playing.  I also play a Snell MTB-x.  I'd say the durability was a little lacking on the Vice, but I was a little disappointed I didn't buy more at that price.  I'd say I prefer the Snell over pretty much any other ball I've played which includes the Pro V1 and Pro V1x.  I believe any of these balls are a good buy at $20/dozen...

I've been playing Vice Pro for about 2 years and for the price, I don't think I can get anything similar. Snell prices in Europe are not as attractive as in the US, so that's where Vice is able to grab some DTC market share.

Never had issues with inconsistency or durability. I mean, my swing is inconsistent enough, wouldn't be fair to blame the ball 😄

  • 2 weeks later...

I wandered into Target yesterday, which is a rare thing for me, but found Vice Pro and Cut Gray on the shelf for the same price as online. Decided to try the Cut Gray. Three pc ball with urethane cover at $20 vs $34 for current gen QST. can’t hurt to try. If they suck I’ll just buy last gen QST til they run out.

Wont go back to target, though. Very rude checkout lady. If I like Cut I’ll buy online.

Anyone else try the Cut Gray?

I won't buy Cut ever again. I tried them out and liked them so I got the 10 dozen deal off amazon.

They were the worst quality ball I've ever used. They cut (no pun intended) and scuffed up quickly. When I say quick, i mean quick as in a few holes quick. Half the balls were good but the other half scuffed and cut. And these weren't with all wedge shots either.

I emailed them, no response. I commented on their facebook, they deleted the comment. I wasn't the only one this happened to either. F*** Cut golf.

Vice just released their new 2020 models, kept the same model name, new packaging and improvements, but not sure what was changed. I just bought 6 dozen at the beginning of the season so, I'm set for now.

I never tried the ones I got at Target. My wife decided to return an item she had bought, and when she said that she was going to make a return I told her to hold up and wait for me. It stuck in my craw how rude the checkout girl was. Took them back for a refund and will spend the money on last years QST at my locally owned golf store. booyah...

My home club has very small greens, 12 of them being elevated.  It puts a premium on short game.  I have played Snell MTB-X for a little over a year now.  Wasn't getting the results around the greens I was looking for.  The 7 yard gain off the tee just isn't worth the sacrifice around the greens.

I am giving Vice Pro's a solid try now.  If those don't work out, I will go back to the Pro-V1.

A few years back we tested and reviewed the Vice Pro Soft balls. I tested them against Pro V1 & Chrome Soft. The Vice Pro Soft beat the competition in a 9 hole challenge....kept up on distance but more importantly it won on accuracy. I looked for the 2017 review but was unable to find it.

I never tried the ones I got at Target. My wife decided to return an item she had bought, and when she said that she was going to make a return I told her to hold up and wait for me. It stuck in my craw how rude the checkout girl was. Took them back for a refund and will spend the money on last years QST at my locally owned golf store. booyah...

I bought a dozen Cut Greys at Target last week and played one Saturday.  It wasn't a good ball striking day, but I didn't notice any significant performance difference between it and the Pro V1x I normally play.  The next time I run low on balls, I may buy some more Greys.

Agreed. Tried the cut sampler a while back and the covers kept getting cut too easily. Never tried again.

I'm interested in trying the Vice balls & I've seen them at Target too. For the posts in this thread that like Vice, what compares to the Z-Star? I just switched to that ball.

I am down to try just about any golf balls always looking for something as good or better for a better price.  Here in Atlanta when the leaves start falling you lose too many to the piles of leaves, yes I know hit it better.

I have tried every name under the sun, I played Bridgestone exclusively for many years before moving to Atlanta.  Once here and my supply dried up I started looking.  I played

Srixon, Snell, Vice, Cut, CSoft, TM, Volvik, and a few others I cannot remember.

Of the DTC brands I found the Snell to be far and away the most consistent performer.  Ball to ball, dozen to dozen.  I know many players that the Vice fits, none of their balls fit me as well as Snell.  There was also some weird yardages I got while testing and using a putter swing I found quite a few balls out of round, or that wouldn't roll perfectly straight.  Not in that the cover wasn't round, but that something inside the ball was sitting at a weird angle, or density was too high or something that the ball would not roll straight.

To be clear, you can find this with every golf ball.  No manufacturers tolerances are so tight that every golf ball is perfect, but the numbers that I found them in Vice was much higher than Srixon, Snell, Bridgestone, or TM.
